🐶🐱 As springtime blooms, we have seen an increase in distemper virus positive wildlife (specifically raccoons) in our area.
Sick wild animals do not act in normal ways and have found their way into suburban areas and backyards, having resulted in direct contact with multiple patients of Dove Creek.
🌸🦊 As your veterinarian we want to ensure your pets stay safe and healthy, so here are a few tips to keep in mind:
1️⃣ Keep your pets' vaccinations up to date. Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent the spread and severity of distemper. There is no treatment for this virus.
2️⃣ Minimize exposure to wildlife. While we all love our outdoor adventures, keeping your pets away from potentially infected animals can greatly reduce their risk. Direct or close contact is how
this virus is spread.
3️⃣ Stay vigilant for symptoms. If your pet exhibits signs such as coughing, nasal discharge, fever, or lethargy, contact your veterinarian promptly.
If your pet does come in contact with wildlife and you are unsure if they are current on their vaccines please give us a call asap for counsel and possible scheduling. (940-387-3313)

Monkey See Monkey Do Exotic Petting Zoo came out with a few of their rescues and we could not have had a better time! The keepers had so much knowledge in regards to these special animals, their daily care, conservation and rescue efforts! Thank you for giving us such an amazing experience and for all you do in rescuing and educating the public about these species 💙

Skylar came to us while studying at UNT a year ago and we are so grateful she found us! She stepped into vet med with ease and is amazing with all the pets she works with and cares for. Yesterday was “National Bring your Cat to the Vet Day!” 🙌🏻🐱🎉 We all know that taking a cat to their veterinarian can be a stressful experience for everyone involved! This may even be a reason why your feline friend hasn’t been out of the house for a few years! We want to help! Cats are masters at hiding disease so regular vet visits are very important. 🩵 Listed below are some tips & tricks to help make the trip and appointment less stressful. Even though a carrier can be a scary place for a cat, using one for transportation is very important to ensure they feel safe while in the car, keeping you safe while you are driving the vehicle, and to avoid them becoming spooked and running away! Often times cats associate their carrier with the animal clinic. Getting the carrier out more often and putting comfort items in it (ie. treats, toys and blankets) can make it feel like a safe space for them. Another tool that can be helpful is a calming pheromone such as our favorite, “Feliway”. It can reduce common signs of stress and comes in both a spray (for blankets and carriers) or a diffuser (to put in common area rooms). Some cats can also benefit from taking an anti-anxiety medication prior to the trip if their anxiety is more severe. If you’re interested in this option you can speak to your veterinary medical team to discuss recommendations. We hope this helps you and your fur-babies in time for their next vet visit! 😊🩵

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month! In the past two months here at Dove Creek we have already had more than four positive heartworm pets. This is extremely scary for us in the veterinary field because heartworm treatment is expensive and can be hard on your pet's body! Heartworm disease is prevalent in all 50 states and in the south our pets are at even higher risk due to our climate. Mosquitos are attracted to living things that produce CO2, so we all breathe in and out meaning we are all targets for those awful mosquitos. Year round heartworm prevention is urged for all pets whether they stay indoors or love going outside. Here is a little secret, Mosquitos can get inside your house! So no pet (dog, cat, ferret) is 100% safe from exposure to mosquitos and the potential heartworms they are carrying.
