We have some sad news 💔
Peep, our beloved female ducky and girlfriend to Kiwi, passed away Monday evening. There were zero signs of injury or illness, and we have absolutely no idea what happened. She’s been totally fine, ducking around the sanctuary with her boyfriend.
We got Peep in 2022 when she was just hours old. Her family had likely been scared away by something, leaving her behind. She was either the last to hatch and not steady enough to follow, or they left before she even hatched. Fortunately, she was brought to us as a little fluff ball who could fit in one hand. At the time, we didn’t have other ducks at the sanctuary, so we let her watch videos of baby ducks and their mamas. She would peep along with the other babies and peck excitedly at the screen. Then we finally got another duck at the sanctuary who became attached to Peep. Kiwi was flightless, but Peep didn’t care, as long as she was by his side. 🦆🫶🏻🪿
We tried to get someone to perform a necropsy so we could get closure and answers. Nobody was available. However, Helena did get hold of one of our sponsors who said she may have been egg bound. She was in an egg laying period but we didn’t see any signs. We think she was either egg bound or had an underlying illness that we were simply unaware of. We’re heartbroken. 💔😢
We will miss our chatty girl dearly. We will keep a close eye on Kiwi to make sure he’s doing okay, as the two were inseparable. He has his chicken girls to keep him company.

This is the reality of animal sanctuary, but it hits harder when you have back-to-back losses of loved ones. Please keep us in your thoughts and consider making a donation to our Magical Match.
