Today is National Puppy Day and we thought it was a good day to remind owners and lovers of Wheaten Terriers what lengths a SCWTCA breeder goes to to ensure that their owners have a Wheaten puppy of sound temperament, conformation and health. Why is conformation important? Because it ensures that your dog can hike, jump and is mentally stable. Most SCWTCA breeders test for much more than the Club requires.

Be sure to visit the SCWTCA Code of Ethics to ensure that when you start your search for a puppy the breeder provides you with proof of health testing and that the dogs in the pedigree have been evaluated by a third party (conformation judge). You can tell if the dog is a champion because the registered name is designated with a title CH before the name. Visit the Wheaten database is you are unsure. www.scwtdb.org

Be sure to share this message to help others find a quality puppy no matter what the breed.

Why a Wheaten?

Finding a dog that fits your lifestyle is tricky. You have to consider your needs and the needs of the dog. It is like a doggy dating app. Many prospective buyers start out on the right track and then they make an impulse decision. That is how they end up with a dog that doesn’t fit their lifestyle. SCWTCA breeders breed to uphold the standard. Why does that matter to you? It means they are taking every precaution to ensure that the puppies they produce meet those characteristics that you are looking for as an addition to your family. The contract they provide you protects the dog, you and the breeders not just the breeder. Be patient. Find a dog that fits your lifestyle but also your lifestyle must fit the dog.

Contact one of our local Clubs to get involved with the breed you love. Visit a dog show... Owners of Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are lucky to have a host of local breed clubs around the country, serving their breed at the grassroots level. For breeds that are less popular, there is usually a regional Group club offering breeder-exhibitors of Terriers, Hounds, Toys, etc., the opportunity to work on specialties and attend meetings that feature knowledgeable guest speakers. Making friends with people in related breeds will broaden your circle, improve your grooming and handling skills, and give you the confidence to take on some volunteering work for the club, whether it be stewarding, hospitality or producing the newsletter. A note from SCWTCA and from the AKC

St Patrick's Day 1962.. a group of Wheaten owners and three Wheatens met in the Brooklyn home of Professor Louis and Ida Mallory. The result was the formation of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of America (SCWTCA). At that time there were 29 Wheaten Terriers known to be in the United States. They had two jobs, keeping the Stud Book and publishing Benchmarks. - The Complete Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Book, Roberta A Vesley.

Join us today in celebrating our birthday and share this post to show your love and support of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier by preserving and protecting the breed.

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, an exuberant Irish farm dog, is happy, friendly, deeply devoted, and just stubborn enough to remind you he’s a terrier.
