I talk about calmness a lot in my puppy classes and often recommend long chews as a calming activity. This is a good study illustrating dog's emotional states when left alone with certain objects.

Like many trainers and dog owners, Mike and I teach our pups early in life that quiet time and short periods of separation are associated with the offering of a special chew. This toy appears at th…

Puppy Class starts this Saturday, Oct 28th. This foundation class is perfect for puppies ranging from 12 weeks to 1 year. Owners learn how to care for and train their dogs using games based training. Games based training is both fun for you and your pup. Some of the skills your pup will learn are how to pay attention to you, ignore distractions, how to be calm, basics to leash walking, and not to jump on people. These classes help build a strong bond between you and your pup and set a foundation for learning more advanced behaviors later.

You can socialize your dog in all the right ways; with all the correct tools and training and timing, and your dog may still grow up and not be the social butterfly you wanted.
You can have them meet and play with every dog and have positive experiences, you can have them meet hundreds of people and enjoy every interaction, and they can still say “no thank you” when they grow up.
Genetics, individual personality and maturity can all play a role here and it’s not your fault or your dogs fault but it is a reality, so we need to stop pushing the idea that lack of sociability is due to lack of socialization, or some kind of failure on the dog or human part. It’s not. It’s a part of life with dogs.
Socialization is not about creating a dog you can take EVERYWHERE all the time…. And it’s not for YOU, so we need to stop looking at it like that. It’s about helping THEM be prepared and ready for the world they live in and not feeling worried or stressed about new or novel things, people, or dogs. It doesn’t guarantee anything, but it can help prepare for lots of things.

Helen St. Pierre

The following picture is of our dog, Asha, who was very reactive to dogs all her life but as you can see in the photo she had many opportunities of socializing and training to desensitize her but nonetheless she never completely felt comfortable around strange dogs. We were able to manage it successfully but we never purposely put her into a situation that would stress her. Every dog is an individual and as guardians we are responsible for keeping them safe and happy.

Puppy socialisation is NOT just about playing with other dogs.

In fact, too much uncontrolled exposure to other dogs can cause so many unintended consequences.

If you have a puppy, make sure you try to work on ALL aspects of socialisation, as listed in the bottom graphic.

WHOSE WALK IS IT ANYWAY?
Imagine going on a long-anticipated walk, through new scenery and enticing scents after being cooped up in the same place all day, but you have been fitted with a blind fold and are being dragged or yanked along at a quick pace.

I imagine that this is how dogs feel when we don’t allow them time to stop, sniff and explore the environment. Dogs largely perceive their world through scent and it’s how they collect and process information and make sense of the world.

Taking away an opportunity for sniffing on a walk really isn’t fair and as much as physical exercise is important, the mental stimulation that sniffing provides is equally, if not more important.

Allowing dogs to choose when to stop and sniff provides so many benefits – increases self-confidence, promotes calmness, lowers stress and anxiety levels, lowers pulse rates, reduces cognitive decline in older dogs and provides important mental and environmental enrichment.

Make time for a slow sniffing walk when you can, where your dog is allowed to choose which direction to go and allowed time to just investigate, interpret the environment and follow wherever their nose leads them.

It may take far more time and patience as we wait for them to finish smelling that particular blade of grass, but the benefits are well worth it – after all, whose walk is it anyway?
