New Blog Post ⭐️

If your dog has a hard time taking pills, and peanut butter just doesn’t cut it, I put together a list of possible ‘hiding places’ that may help. And some strategies for counter-conditioning.

If you use something that works and it’s not on the list, let me know and I’ll add it!

Comment “Pills” and I’ll send you the info. It’s also you-know-where 👆🏻

Setting your dog up to succeed often means preventing them from the behavior you don’t want, while you are working on teaching the behavior that you do want.

⭐️Covering the windows
⭐️Covering your doorbell
⭐️Separating your dog from your cat ⭐️Covering electrical cords
⭐️Using a gate to make sure your dog doesn’t run out the door

These are all simple things you can do to help the process.

Your dog’s behavior depends on a lot, but one thing if for sure, he is likely going to have less of a hard time if you consistently set him up for success!

I’d love to hear how you set your dog up to succeed?

Happy National Pet Day!

Are you doing something special for your pet today? I feel like Birdie and I celebrate every day, but today she is getting a longer walk and some freeze dried mussels. Maybe a pup cup later!

Looks aren’t the only thing that matter when choosing a puppy.

Looks aren’t the only thing that matter when choosing a puppy.

RESEARCH REQUIRED!

Choosing a dog just because of the way they look.

We wouldn’t choose a partner or make a commitment to sharing our lives with someone based purely on the way they look – (I suppose there could be exceptions in some cases!)

We would first really get to know them, what kind of personality they have and who they really are before making that sort of commitment.

Yet people continue to choose dogs just because of the way they look.

Maybe they saw a dog like that in a movie that they enjoyed or maybe they just really like the way they look, without having any understanding or thought to learn about what that particular breed was selectively bred to do and what behaviour might be expected.

The way a dog behaves is not always specific to the breed. Dogs are individuals, with their own unique personality and their behaviour is shaped not only by genetics, but by specific life and learning experiences and environment, but problems can happen when the traits of that breed and their specific needs are not taken into account.

Some breeds may just simply not be compatible with a particular person or family’s needs, lifestyle, environment or expectations.

Is it fair or ethical to need to suppress, train out or even punish breed specific tendencies, calling them behaviour problems, when we hold a dog in a captive environment that is unsuitable for them.

First research the breed and learn all you can about potential traits and what to expect before making that choice.

Food Affects Mood 🧠

Food Affects Mood 🧠

🦠🧠 The Gut Affects the Brain and the Brain Affects Everything 🧠🦠

A gut imbalance affects the whole body.

Organ function.

Mood.

Focus.

Ability to learn.

Anxiety.

Nutrient uptake.

Inflammation.

Food intolerance.

Seasonal allergies.

If your dog is experiencing any of these concerns, maybe closely looking at the diet and its impact on gut health is something to consider.

Improving digestibility, supporting microbial diversity and moving away from highly processed, fortified or unnatural foods will help provide the first steps in nurturing gut health.

Great information to be shared 👏🏻

Great information to be shared 👏🏻

Service dogs.
Probably one of the most unpopular topics for any pet dog trainer.
I cannot begin to count the amount of service dog training requests I receive.
“Can your online courses train my dog to be a service dog?”
“I need to make my dog a service dog so he can ride on the bus with me” (Yes, someone seriously asked me this)
“Do you certify service dogs?”
No - no - no - and more no.
Service dog training is completely different from pet dog training.
If your dog is trained to walk nicely on a leash and sit and stay, they are a pet dog.
If your dog comes up to you and nuzzles you when you are sad - they are still a pet dog.
If you want your dog to accompany you into stores or fly in-cabin on planes … they’re still only a pet dog and these privileges are not for them.
Service dogs are task-trained.
They are specifically taught to work for people with disabilities.
A dog that solely provides comfort is not a service dog.
I see a lot of people acquiring dogs, labeling them as “my service dog” and *then* going about training them.
This is not how that works.
You cannot just select a dog, put a service dog harness on them and figure the rest out as you go.
We regularly receive requests from dog owners who tell us that their “service dog” pulled them over on leash or nips at visitors.
That their service dog relentlessly chases wildlife on walks or has intense anxiety in social settings.
One time I got a request from a lady who told me that she got a dog from the shelter to be her son’s service dog, but that “service dog” was now biting the son and could I please fix it.
I’m sorry - none of those dogs are not service dogs then. And they likely won’t be service dogs in the future either.
Please be honest about the dog you own.
Unless you worked diligently to train them as a service animal with specific tasks, they are a pet.
A beloved, (hopefully) well-behaved, wonderful pet.
But not a working dog, and you should not demand the privileges that are reserved for true service dogs and their disabled handlers.
Staying clear with this distinction protects the actual service dogs and their owners 🙂

Sounds we can’t hear are always something to consider 🐶

PSA: We adopted our dog, Rowdy, from the shelter 5 years ago. He was already an adult dog, so we estimate he is about 11 or 12 years old at this point. I love this dog. He is the sweetest soul and my BFF. For the past week or so he hasn’t been acting like himself. He licked a raw spot on his foot. He was panting constantly. He was pacing. Sunday morning, the pacing and panting got so bad, and I was REALLY nervous that there was something seriously wrong with him. For 45 minutes, he panted like crazy and constantly paced back and forth. He was keeping his tail tucked down all the time. His ears were pinned back. He would not settle down and he wouldn’t eat. We tried everything. I ended up giving him a trazadone that he takes sometimes when he goes to the groomer. It seemed to take a little bit of the edge off, but not much. He still wouldn’t eat and still wouldn’t settle. I took off work on Monday so I could take him to the vet. We did bloodwork and x-rays. Knowing he is a senior dog, I was trying to prepare myself for the worst case scenario. I was glad to see his bloodwork was great except for some elevated liver enzymes. The x-rays showed he was a little backed up but no major issues. He got an anti-nausea injection and some Gabapentin to help with some tenderness in his back and to hopefully help keep him calm. When we got home, he was ok for a little bit, but eventually started pacing and panting again. We walked around the neighborhood for a long time and he used the bathroom a lot. He seemed pretty happy about that and was in good spirits until we got home and he refused to come back in the house. Every time I took him out that evening, he would hunker down like he didn’t want to come back in the house. When my vet called and I gave her the update, she suggested there may be some new electronic device in the house that was emitting a high frequency noise that is hurting his ears. We had just put new smart outlets in the house about a week ago. His pacing and panting were worse when the lamps were on, so I unplugged all the smart outlets. He stopped panting, stopped pacing, and ate his food. His tail was even up and wagging again. When I plugged the smart outlets all back in and asked Alexa to turn on the lamps, he immediately started panting and pacing again. My husband used an app to test the frequency of the smart outlets. It was off the charts. We've left the outlets unplugged for two days and have confirmed that it is definitely the smart outlets that are causing his stress and discomfort. He's back to being a totally normal dog now. I really thought this was the end for Rowdy based on the way he was acting. I am so thankful for Dr. Newell at BoonesCreek AnimalHospital for figuring out this simple solution. If your pets are exhibiting similar symptoms, you may want to consider checking your electronics first. I cannot express how relieved I am that he is ok now. 😭♥️🐶

🌈Paisley🌈

There doesn’t need to be a day for me to remember her 💖

These photos were taken 4 months before she died. I took her on a bucket list trip where she got to go swimming, sniffing, snuggling, hiking, eat pup cups, and do all of her favorite things. The first photo shocked me when I looked at it because there was a rainbow in the reflection with her in the background. It made me sad because I knew what was coming.

The second photo was the first morning at our AirBnB. She walked in the wet grass taking her time sniffing something (of course) and then meandered up to the front door and laid down. Her wet pawprints made a line up the sidewalk. She was so happy that morning ✨

Eddie is a 5-month old 4-lb Maltese in need of a new home. Details are in the flyer. I am helping to facilitate, as Eddie and his parents are my clients. This is a no judgement zone. I love working with clients who only want what's best for their puppies/dogs. I want to find a really, really good home for Eddie! Feel free to share. Thank you!

When you are looking for a dog trainer and reading websites, there are oodles and oodles of terms that are confusing. ‘Balanced Training’ means that the person uses both reinforcement and punishment as defined by the 4 quadrants of operant conditioning. They may use a shock collar, leash jerks, paw pinches, ear twists, or god knows what else to change your dog’s behavior.

It’s important to know what to look for in a dog trainer and what questions to ask. Also- If someone offers a guarantee, RUN the other direction!

Comment “I love my dog” and I will DM you my suggestions for what to look for and what to ask when interviewing potential prospects.

This study is one I refer to a lot when I talk to veterinarians about dog gut health. Dogs are being used to study the human microbiome, and have found to be the closest compared to pigs or mice. This study was done in collaboration with Nestle (Purina). The science behind dog gut health and the gut brain axis is small but for now, I look at this study and others when asked about research. I have a stack of papers on my desk I can quote from, and the pile grows each month. Plus I have oodles and oodles of anecdotal evidence that I cannot discount. When a dog feels better, and becomes less anxious, it’s a win-win regardless if there is a study to back it up. Science is always changing as we discover new things and I am so excited to see what the future holds!

Hello from Minnesota ☀️I’m Kari from Wag & Train and I want to introduce myself! Some of you have been here since my birth (hi mom!), and some of you are new. I am so happy you are here 🐶 Tell me about your furbabies. What kind of dog do you have and what is your favorite thing about him or her?

Here is a little bit about how I roll… 🚗

I have been working with humans and their dogs for over 30 years. I have a Master’s Degree in Animal Behavior, am a Pet Nutrition Specialist, am certified by the IAABC, and specialize in anxiety, aggression, and the gut-brain axis. If you need help or resources for your dog’s behavior, I would be happy to help you implement a plan that best suits you and your dog’s needs. I offer 1-time consults or full behavior packages. I love working with people and their dogs! 🐶🥳💖

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2013, and subsequently learned about Leaky Gut Syndrome. I became a total nutrition nerd for myself then.

In 2017, my dog Paisley developed allergies and I had to learn how to heal her leaky gut naturally. And thus began my journey into canine gut health and the gut-brain axis. I went to school to become a Pet Nutrition Specialist in 2019, and continue my studies each day.

I am based in but I work with people all over the world virtually. I don’t need to see your dog’s behavior to be able to help because I go to the root cause. Your dog’s behavior is a symptom of underlying issues like fear, insecurity, emotional or physical stress, past trauma, health issues, or an unhealthy microbiome, etc … often it’s a combination. I treat the ‘whole dog’. And I am here as an emotional support for you, as well. We are in this together ✨

Peanut butter is becoming increasingly questionable as a lickmat ingredient because it can contain xylitol (also known as birch sugar), lots of actual sugar, plus glyphosate and other toxins. I use organic baby food and Churu dog paste packets for Birdie’s lickmats. The flavors are endless, although she’s not picky. There are lots of other alternatives, too. What do you use in your dog’s lickmats? 🐶

Sunday Funday!

I wanna know- what is your dog’s nickname? My dog’s actual name is Birdie, but I often call her Boo Boo Bunny 🤣 I have no idea why. I also call her Birdie Calvert because she is named after Sandra Bullock’s character in .

What is your dog’s nickname and why? 🐶
