Laser and Odor
The last sequence of our laser training ended with the introduction of a target I planted in the backyard. One of the complexity of this type of training is the dog learning how to transition from eyes ( visually responding to the laser) to nose ( hunting for target odor first in the area the dog was directed and expanding the hunt to include the balance of the search area). In this video notice how focused he was on "eyes" and the sequence of returning back to me for additional cues. Can you tell when he transitioned to "nose" to find the firearm (target odor)? This type of training really makes the dog think and process information based on real time input and memory ( for some dogs). This training requires a lot of reps for context and generalization of the association of the laser to detection.
Buried Odor
Open field buried accelerant odor was among our training objectives today with K9 Granite. Even though his handler forgot his toy in her vehicle he stayed on odor. What a good boy!
Odor Wall
Tried out the first two panels of my new odor wall. I plan on putting Lucien on this odor discovery tool multiple times to condition multiple odor pictures, odor comittment, and enhance his discrimination and sourcing skills. Solid Fundamentals are the building blocks for advanced and complex scenarios.
Buried Odor
Today we conditioned Narc version of a buried hide off leach in an partially enclosed area of my yard.
Scenario Conditions:
Odor 1. ( Cocaine )
Age Time: 15 minutes
Ambient Temp 77 degrees
Humidity 35 %
Wind 5 to 8 mph SW
Wind Action: Swirling in confined area.
Vessel Temp 63 degrees ( Notice the temp of the vessel was 14degrees cooler that the ambient temp. How do you think that affected odor?).
Vessel Type: Metal Cylinder
Placement: Buried
Depth: 3 to 5 inches
Maintanace context of odor discovery that is outdoors and buried. Not often in the context of his work he discovers buried odor. Always work your dog to be balanced, prepared, and competent to locate target odor in any and all situations and scenarios. ( I chuckled at the start of this search because he wanted to clear my neighbors cars.) Good job Lucien!
Happy Odor Hunting!
