Hartnagle's Hud, a 1975 progeny of Taylor's Buena and Taylor's Whiskey, bore the unique blend of breeder Joe Taylor's vision and the nurturing guardianship of the Hartnagle Family.

Hud was clocked at a staggering 35 mph, and his agility was unmatched, effortlessly vaulting over six-foot fences from a standstill. More than his athleticism, Hud's playful antics brought joy, whether that meant humorously beating the Hartnagle children to hidden Easter treats or showcasing his sharp intellect during tracking exercises set up by Ernie Hartnagle.

Jeanne Joy Hartnagle recalls, "On more than one occasion, Hud saved the day. Once, during the early morning hours, Hud ran into my parents bedroom. He caused such a commotion that my father realized something was wrong. Dad let Hud out the door and grabbed his boots. As he got his boots on, he saw the neighbors stallion and ours striking and biting at each other between the fence. Just then, the fence gave way. All in the same moment, he saw Hud grab the nose of the neighbor's stud and spin him around and then heel him hard. In an instant, he turned to head and heel our stallion and herd him away. Hud's uncanny instincts and outstanding abilities helped Dad get control of what could have been a bad situation. Hud had a lot of grit."

As a sire, Hud's legacy remains unparalleled. He imparted not just his strikingly handsome visage but also an admirable temperament and strong constitution. His pairings, especially with line-bred Badger females and Shiloh daughters, bore exceptional offspring.

For many, the mention of Hartnagle's Hud evokes fond memories, a testament to a dog who was much more than just a great stockdog; he was a cherished family member.

Did you know there is a definite difference between a male and female? Well there truly is!

 Male vs. Female

Does a male or a female make a better pet for you and your family?

It’s not uncommon for people to believe that a female dog will make a better pet. We get a lot of calls for people wanting that “special little girl”. For whatever reason they don’t think that females will exhibit “alpha” behaviors like hu***ng and/or marking. A lot of people think that females are more passive and friendly and that they don’t take part in fighting over dominance, which could NOT be farther from the truth. If you check out the structure of dog packs, the females determine the pecking order and rule the roost. The result of that behavior is that the females become more stubborn, independent, and territorial than the males. These females are much more intent on exercising their control by participating in that “alpha” behavior like hu***ng. Most fighting will usually break out between two females.

Males tend to be more affectionate, exuberant, attentive, and even more demanding of attention. The males are very attached to their owners, tending to be more dedicated, reliable and less temperamental. They are more sociable, more accepting of other pets, playful for years, and take quicker to children. Most boys are easily motivated by treats/food, words of praise and are so eager to please that training actually becomes easier. Their playful nature, however, can make males more easily distracted. The boys are more likely to act silly and more puppy-like, always wanting to play games, no matter what their age. The boys are fun-loving until the day they die, whereas girls tend to be more standoffish and dignified the older they get.

Neutered males rarely exhibit secondary sexual behavior such as marking and lifting their legs or hu***ng. Once the testosterone levels recede after neutering, most of these behaviors will disappear if they ever existed. Boys who were neutered early (by five months of age) usually don’t ever raise their leg to urinate. Early spay or neutering is not best for your dog ! Please do your research and consult your vet!!

So before making your decision on that age old dilemma of male verses female, hopefully this will give you some helpful info to think about.

What type of dog water bowl do you use? 🐶💧

The dog water bowl has previously been identified as the third most contaminated🦠 item within the household and can be a breeding ground for dangerous germs & life-threatening bacteria🧫 that can put the entire house at risk, researchers at University Centre Hartpury have revealed.

So, which dish is best to use for a dog water bowl? The bowl that grows the least amount of life-threatening bacteria!

In the first study of its’ kind, Hartpury scientists found stainless steel grew the least amount of bacteria and over time, plastic bowls grew the highest amount, but the shocking part was the most harmful bacterial species (including salmonella, E. coli and MRSA) were most frequently identified in CERAMIC bowls!

Lead can also be a problem when using ceramic bowls, and the endocrine disrupting chemicals found in plastic bowls are a no-go! Also be aware plastic bowls🥣 can cause Plastic Dish Nasal Dermatitis🙀: Chemicals in plastic absorb through the skin and inhibit the synthesis of melanin, leaving the nose👃🏼 and adjacent areas with pink blotches.

So stainless steel🍴 bowls are the safest, right?

Well not so fast…. there’s even been recalls on stainless bowls😫. In our upcoming The Forever Dog book, in the chapter titled Environmental Impact and the section labelled “Toxic Toys, Chews, and Beds", we cover how to choose the best chemical-free bowls🚫 that won’t leach contaminants over time.
