'Tis the season to be hairy (horse owners)!
If, however, you notice that your horse is clinging to their winter coat longer than they should, it might be time to give your veterinarian a call โ especially if your horse is 15+.
A long haircoat that fails to shed according to normal seasonal patterns is the most classic sign of Equine Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID), also known as Cushingโs disease. This disorder of the pituitary gland results in hormonal imbalances and is one of the most common diseases of middle-aged and geriatric horses.
Early diagnosis and treatment are key to helping horses with PPID live long, happy lives. Without treatment, symptoms tend to worsen over time and many horses are euthanized as a consequence of laminitis, recurrent foot abscesses or complications related to bacterial infections.

Great suggestions from our friends at Dechra US Equine! Of course, having a great vet ready and able to provide care post-foaling is a key checklist item, too!
While foaling season is an exciting time of year, itโs not without some stress. Whether youโre a first-time breeder or an experienced veteran, preparation is key when it comes to successful deliveries. A crucial part of planning for a new arrival is having a well-stocked foaling kit, and while weโve made a quick list to get you started; your veterinarian can make additional recommendations for your mareโs specific needs.

Interesting article from Paulick Report!
"Each one-acre increase in turnout area when foals were four months old reduced the rate of musculoskeletal injury and disease when they were between 6 and 19 months of age by 24 percent."

A recent study, co-authored by Dr. Rocky Mason, set out to find whether Zylkene supplementation had an effect on foals' growth and cortisol levels during weaning. While the data set was small and no statistically significant difference was shown between foals administered Zylkene and the control group, there was numerically less of decline in height and weight of foals given the supplement.
This suggests that with further study Zylkene may decrease losses in foal growth rate!
Check out the full study here:
Abstract OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to determine whether oral administration of ฮฑ-casozepine (Zylkene) supplementation decreases the risk of disease in foals, as measured through salivary cortisol levels, temperature, clinical signs of disease, and body weight before and after weaning. Stay ahead of your horse's health in the cold temperatures! Providing access to quality forage, fresh water, dry shelter and maintaining consistency during winter weather can ensure your horse is happy and healthy!
VET TIP: If your horse isn't interested in drinking during the cold, try adding electrolytes, apple juice or sweet feed to another bucket of water. Be sure provide clean, fresh water as an option as well!

We'd like to introduce to you another new LEMG team member. Let's give a warm welcome to our new Associate Veterinarian, Dr. Page Mauk.
Originally from Franklin, TN, Page was the only horse-crazy person in her family. Not one to be deterred, she evented before grooming and training polo ponies. Deeply passionate about horses, she knew from a young age that veterinary medicine was the perfect job for her: โIโve always worked with horses and wanted a career that would keep me in the barn,โ she explains.
Dr. Mauk completed both her undergraduate and graduate degree at the University of Tennessee. Her favorite cases are those that are a challenge, but that are resolvable. โI love when a nasty laceration comes together well; I love the dystocia that I can get fixed; I love the dummy foals that turn around; I love the abscess that pops and gives instant relief,โ she explains.
Dr. Mauk loves living in the Bluegrass. โI have so much respect for the athletes that we create here and I have enjoyed working with them at different stages throughout both their careers and mine,โ she says. โWith that said, I think my favorite part about working in Central Kentucky is the hope. There is so much potential in each new foal, with each sale, with each new stallion. Itโs so exciting to follow these horses and hope for their success.โ
When sheโs not working, Page enjoys riding her OTTB and spending time outdoors with her family: husband Fletcher, daughter Aurie, and son Miller, along with Airedale Terrier Waylon.

Please give a warm welcome our new Associate Veterinarian and Performance Horse Specialist, Dr. Natalie Heitz!
A Kentucky native, Dr. Natalie Heitz grew up going to the races at Churchill Downs with her grandmother. This early exposure to Thoroughbred racing piqued Dr. Heitzโs passion for horses; she attended the University of Kentucky for her undergraduate studies before becoming a Darley Flying Start trainee. Once she completed that program, Dr. Heitz was admitted to Auburn University, where she obtained her doctorate in veterinary medicine.
She returned to Kentucky to practice and holds licenses in Kentucky, Florida, and New York. Dr. Heitz joined the LEMG team in August 2022.
Dr. Heitz enjoys working with equine athletes in all phases of their life, from the time theyโre born, throughout their racing careers and into retirement. โBeing a part of each milestone in their career is very rewarding to me,โ she explains. Her areas of interest include lameness, racetrack, and herd health.
Outside of work, Dr. Heitz enjoys playing golf, flag football and other sports, spending time with her family, and watching the UK athletics (go Cats!). She also sits on the Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association (KVMA) Government Relations Committee and volunteers with the Boys and Girls Haven as the head of their Equine Programs Advisory Council.
She has three fur babies: a Golden Retriever named Rollo, and two cats, Gepetto and Lightning McQueen.
