October I will be turning 60 years old. As I reflect on my life, there are things I would definitely change, but the one thing I wouldn’t change is giving 2nd Chances!
I have been saving the animals in need all of my life. As a child, my mother said I always came home from school hungry and she couldn’t understand why, because she either made my lunch or gave me money to buy lunch. One day she was grocery shopping and ran into one of the schools crossing guard who asked her if she knew I was feeding my lunch to the strays that hung around the school yard. It was then she realized why I was so hungry after school.

I spent my lunch money on helping the animals in need as a child, and I am still spending my lunch money and more on the animals in need today.

This year for my birthday all I want is, what I always wanted, to be able to help the animals in need. 2nd Chance Dog Rescue only takes in the most neediest dogs with severe medical issues. For the past few years as Chris and I get older, we realize that we can’t continue on this path for another 10 years, so we decided to only rescue the seniors in need, The ones that: with the right medical and love can live for another 3-5 years. These are the dogs others turn away because they are not adoptable and it is extremely expensive to manage their on going medical. Sadly this is true, our monthly medical bills average between $10,000-$25,000.

This year for my birthday I am hoping our supporters and donors will consider making a tax deductible donation in order to help us continue with my life long passion/mission in giving 2nd Chances.

Please keep our Polly in your thoughts and prayers. She was rushed to Arise Emergency Hospital this morning after her foster mom Maureen Paula called and said her breathing is extremely elevated. Once at Arise, she was rushed to the critcal care team and Dr. Cortez just informed us that our girl is in Congestion Heart Failure. She is spending the day/night in hospital and the hope is we can bring her home and continue with treatment, knowing her time may be short.

We rescued Polly 18 months ago, after she was found injured and hiding in bushes, by her injuries it was apparent that she was attacked by a larger animal. Polly came to us broken, scared and hand shy. We of course did a full medical work up and our girl has an enlarged heart and valley fever which she has been and continues to be treated for. It has taken Polly 6 months to come around and settle in. She became extremely bonded with Maureen and her little dogs, so we decided to keep her under our rescue as a Last Chance Angel and Maureen would foster her while we cover her medical etc. Polly just had a full check up two months ago and everything was fine. This just came on and we are shocked and heartbroken that she is in critical condition.

We are praying for you Polly..

Heartbreaking. This old lady needs a soft bed and a place to live out the remainder of her life!!!!

❤️❤️Rescued‼️❤️❤️

💔🐾 “Forgotten, But Still Holding On” 🐾💔
This 13-Year-Old Girl Needs a Medical Foster by 10/28 — or She May Not Survive Past 10/29.

🐶 Name: Unknown (she hasn’t even been given a name yet)
🆔 Animal ID:
♀️ S*x: Female
🎂 Age: 13 years
⚖️ Weight: 35.8 lbs
🐕 Breed: Brown Australian Cattle Dog Mix
🏠 Kennel: East Shelter — Wing S, Kennel 203
📍 Address: 1920 S. Lewis, Mesa, AZ 85210
🚨 Deadline: Must be placed by 10/28/2025 — at risk for humane euthanasia on or after 10/29/2025
📋 NHO Priority: Medical – Needs Foster

🩵 Her Story
She walks slowly now — each step careful, each breath a quiet whisper of resilience. This gentle senior girl came into the shelter on October 23rd, tired and frail, but still so kind. Staff describe her as soft-bodied, calm, and cooperative, allowing vaccinations and care with the gentlest restraint.

Her body tells a story of hardship: severe dental disease, weakness in her hind legs, and raw spots from age and wear. Despite it all, she looks up with trusting eyes, hoping for someone to see her — not as “too old,” but as a soul who still matters.

She’s not strong enough for surgery or shelter life anymore. What she needs most is comfort — a soft bed, steady hands, and the dignity of peace and love in her golden days.

💔 Why She’s Urgent
The shelter’s medical team has done all they can, but her condition requires more than they can provide. If no foster steps up by COB 10/28, she will be at risk for humane euthanasia as early as 10/29. She deserves to leave this world surrounded by love, not fluorescent lights and concrete floors.

🐾 How You Can Help

If you have a quiet home and a compassionate heart, you can be the reason she feels safe again.
She doesn’t need much — just warmth, care, and the chance to rest in peace and comfort.
