Mario's Mama: Pet Bakery & Frozen Treats Our number one goal is to provide your pet with a wholesome, nutritious, treat that you can feel good
(38)

Mario is our rescue black lab mix and is a member of our family. We became concerned about the contents of the pet food and treats that are on the market after the many stories of pets becoming gravely ill or even dying from treats. We decided that there was a need for fresh, wholesome treats and special occasion products for pets in the Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky and Southeast Missouri a

rea and this is when Mario's Mama was born. At the moment, our products can be picked up, delivered in some cases or mailed to our customers and be sure to look for us at local fairs, etc. . If we are successful, our hopes are to open a retail location in the future and to use our success to help the many pet rescue organizations in the area. All of our treats are made with human-grade ingredients and contain no artificial preservatives or chemicals and have no added refined sugars.

Rethinking the Role of Carbs in Your Dog’s Diet 🐕❓

Kibble is full of carbohydrates, which dogs have no (zero) biological requirements for. Yet, the majority of dogs in North America are fed lots of carbs in ultra-processed pet food. 👎 Veterinarians Dr. Chris Zink and Dr. Donna Raditic took a deep dive into kibble, and discovered it’s not only the carbs, but how they’re processed that can create disease in canine companions.

Tumors and other malignant conditions are the No. 1 cause of death in fully grown dogs, but when should screening start? Considering the factors that affect age at diagnosis, such as your pet's breed, gender and how much he weighs, a ‘one age fits all' approach doesn't work.

HOW SAFE ARE ALLERGY DRUGS?
Allergies are your dog’s immune system reacting to a false alarm. The immune system identifies something harmless like pollen as a threat, and attacks it as an environmental allergy. Or the immune system thinks healthy foods are enemies and responds with food allergies or sensitivities.

Unfortunately, allergy drugs suppress the allergy symptoms but don't help the immune system learn how to behave correctly.

Instead, they weaken and even destroy the immune system. And that makes your dog more susceptible to all disease … not just allergies and food sensitivities;

Here are some side effects of popular dog allergy medications.

SIDE EFFECTS OF STEROIDS
Steroids work because they suppress the immune system … at least temporarily. But they cause side effects like excess drinking and peeing, along with fur loss. That’s why dogs are usually weaned off as soon as they're comfortable again, and steroids are usually given only short term.

The only good news is that steroids only suppress the immune system while your dog takes them. After you stop the drugs, the immune system appears to returns to normal.

SIDE EFFECTS OF ATOPICA
Atopica is cyclosporine, originally developed to prevent organ rejection in transplant patients. To do this, it had to destroy the immune system.

Side effects of Atopica include headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, trembling, swollen bleeding gums, kidney failure, hypertension, easy bruising, hearing problems, yellowing of skin and eyes, loss of consciousness, vision changes, swollen glands, immune suppression and dizziness ... and worst of all, cancer. Increased risk of cance, as well as infectious disease, are major side effect in dogs who take this drug.

SIDE EFFECTS OF APOQUEL
Apoquel does stop dogs from itching. But once dogs start the drug, they usually have to be on it for life. Often, when you try to wean a dog off Apoquel, the itching is worse than it was before.

Apoquel works because it kills kinases in the body, Kinases are important part of the immune system’s communication network. Preventing kinases from working makes your dog more prone to all kinds of disease. .

Dr Deva Khalsa says that unfortunately, the immune system doesn’t seem to recover, even after you stop Apoquel.

Even after holistic treatment that resolves allergies, dogs who’ve been on Apoquel still get other problems like yeast or secondary bacterial infections, because the kinases can no longer signal properly.

SIDE EFFECTS OF CYTOPOINT
Cytopoint is a newer, injectable allergy drug. The manufacturer claims it doesn’t suppress the immune system like Apoquel does. But that’s not really true.

Cytopoint is a synthetic monoclonal antibody that targets a cytokine called Interleukin 31 (IL 31).

Cytokines are involved in regulating multiple physiological functions in multiple parts of your dog’s body. IL 31 triggers cell mediated immunity against pathogens. It also regulates red blood cells and connective tissues.

Blocking IL 31 can cause immune system dysregulation by stopping this important messaging system. There are many stories of Cytopoint harming or even killing dogs. Dr Edward Bassingthwaighte says that blocking IL 31 makes your dog more vulnerable to infectious disease, and may even lead to autoimmune disease
