Don't punish the growl. Your dog is communicating with you. If you punish that communication, it will stop. A dog that stops communicating when it is scared, nervous, or uncomfortable is a dog that learns to bite without warning. We have to respect what a dog is communicating to use and adjust accordingly.

Sadly, one of the things that aversive trainers like to put about is that positive trainers like me throw treats left, right and centre at the dogs we are training without any thought.
They say we are:
"bribing them"
"killing them" (making them fat)
"will always have to use treats to get a response"

All this is of course, complete mis-information designed to make people believe that we should not use kindness and rewards to train dogs and that using aversive tools and training methods are the way you do it.

However, positive trainers use SCIENCE to train dogs. Science tells us that a behaviour that is rewarded is more likely to be repeated. That rule applies to every thinking creature on this planet from apex predators to fish. Yes, goldfish and other species of fish can be taught to perform tricks using food rewards.

We use Learning Theory to help us train dogs.

Aversive trainers like to pretend that if you train a dog using positive training, your dog will never learn when they are doing something wrong. We positive trainers have a saying that "positive doesn't mean permissive". However, those aversive trainers who like to complain about positive training won't tell you about that part.

The reason for that is that they don't understand how positive training works because they have no education in dog behaviour .

So, next time you hear an aversive trainer spouting all that ridiculous nonsense, you will understand that what they are saying comes from a place of ignorance, not knowledge.
