We are forever grateful for these amazing creatures we have the privilege of connecting with on a daily basis. They are so patient and kind, they speak volumes in their stillness 💞

"The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times...the best moments usually occur when a person's body or mind is stretched to it's limited in voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile."
~ Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

We often idealize ease - and there is value in rest. That said, life’s most enjoyable moments usually occur when we are pushing ourselves - exploring the limits of what is possible. Difficult horses help us stretch our skills as trainers. For me Þólinn (pictured rearing here) has been one of those horses. He has always challenged me. And it has always been worthwhile.

🎶 inspiration comes today from the fantastic book by Rick Rubin “The Creative Act: A Way of Being” he says :

“Living life as an artist is a practice.
You are either engaging in the practice or you’re not.
It makes no sense to say you’re not good at it.
It’s like saying, “I’m not good at being a monk.” You are either living as a monk or you’re not.
We tend to think of the artist’s work as the output.
The real work of the artist is a way of being in the world.” 🌱

What do you do when not riding or in the stable to keep “practicing” your progress as an equestrian? Do you read books? Watch documentaries? Maybe you work on another artform that compliments how you approach your riding? For me, writing music with friends and problem solving new songs is a great form of practice as I have to listen and respond in an appropriate manner that enhances the music, much as I’m doing when riding my horse. 🎹

Today we explore improvisation and vulnerability. Lala finds inspiration from the book “Faith, Hope and Carnage” by Nick Cave and Sean O’Hagan for both her equestrian and musical journeys.

Did you know that the Resonant Riding founders Carrie and Lala are core leaders and members of the Knights of Iceland team. Many of the principles we use in Knights of Iceland are the same training principles we implement in your Resonant Riding philosophy. In our drills quality of movement in our horses is cultivated as we hone our pattern precision and regulate our horses speed to match the group. Similarly, in Resonant Riding we focus on the tools of speed and directional control to develop our horses quality of movement in training sessions. Another aspect of our Knights performances is how we ride forward with power and energy as a closely knit group encouraging the horses and riders to feed off one another. In Resonant Riding we hold dear Icelandic traditions of riding with power and utilizing natural elements such as riding together to bring out the best in our horses!

“To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake, it is necessary to stand out in the cold.” ~Aristotle ❄️❄️❄️ How are all our fellow equestrians fairing these last few weeks of winter? Lots of breaking ice buckets and hauling waters? Yeah, us too! But we still love winter 💙
