Cheers 🥂 to happy endings!
Way back on June 27th I got a call asking for help with a stray dog that had been running the streets in Akron for over 5 weeks, and couldn’t be caught. She settled in on a lovely lady’s porch, and was fed and gave water. For days, she stayed on this porch, but roamed throughout the night. With the 4th of July coming, and lots of fireworks, I said the safest place for her was in my kennel. A neighbor friend took her to the vet to check for a microchip, but of course not!
I did not post her “available for adoption” because I had a feeling this would have a happy ending!
My new friend, Lisa, paid to have this female dog get up to date on shots, heartworm tested(negative), tested for parasites(negative), and then I had her spayed. Fast forward to today, after many visits with Lisa’s dogs at my place, then at their place, “Andi” is now in her forever home!!!
Andi, you were a delight to foster! I know you will do great! You’re a wonderful dog, and have committed owners!

Lots of playtime today before those nasty storms rolled in!

Cancer took Harlow the Great Dane too soon, Sweet Bella, the Italian Greyhound, was 16 and her body was just tired, and Heinz, the Doberman passed VERY unexpectedly from a blood clot near his heart. Please keep their families in your thoughts…

It’s that time of the year!
In Medina Township(where we live, and our kennel is located), it’s legal to blow off the BIG fireworks now!
Most of my neighbors enjoy setting off fireworks on their property! They do let me know when and what time they’ll be doing it, so I have all the dogs out for the last time prior to any being blown off that I’m aware of. We are also very close to Weymouth Country club, and can see and hear the fireworks to 3-4 other cities.
I do my best to keep everyone calm, but if you have concerns when your pup will be with me, please let me know…

About 4 weeks ago, I woke up on a Wednesday and started my day like any other day. Took my 6 personal dogs outside to go potty, everyone pooped including Paisley, then we came inside and I fed them. I rest my dogs in their crates for at least a full hour as I fear bloat with big dogs. I took care of the boarding dogs, and let my dogs come out, but Paisley refused to come out of her crate. She finally did, but immediately laid down. I took my dogs outside, and she laid down again. She was not herself, was drooling and her posture was off. Her back was arched. To me, she was showing very early signs of bloat(GDV)
I rushed her to Metropolitan Animal Hospital, and they took her right back, as this is time sensitive. The X-ray showed her stomach had not flipped, but was full of food and some gas. They send their rads out to be read, and after 2 hours, the radiologist said she could have a very small blockage? The ER doctor nor the surgeon saw a blockage, so they made her vomit, gave her fluids, and sent us home. Told me to keep her quiet and fast her for 18 hours. We got home by 2pm
By 7pm she was deteriorating by the minute. Lethargic, her back legs were shaking, she would wince in pain if I touched her belly…
Back to Metro we went. More fluids and more X-rays.
Now the radiologist sees a “sharp object” that has perforated her intestines, and she’s become septic. They need to do surgery as soon as they can get her stable and get a team in to do it(it’s now midnight)
I get a call at 4:30am from the surgeon and she told me there was actually no blockage, but her intestines had twisted into each other, and 13” of them had died off. 13” of Paisley’s intestines were black. They cut out all 13”, and were able to save her life(she has over 10’ of intestines)
They gave her a 50% chance to survive surgery
They gave her a 20% chance to survive days 3-5
Paisley is a fighter.
Paisley beat the odds.

When I asked the surgeon why this happens, what could I have done to prevent it???
Her answer was “bad luck”
Nothing I could or could not have done would have helped her. It just happens. To 0.6% of dogs.
So on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 Paisley had bad luck
Today, she is totally fine
Make sure you’re in tune to your dogs
Make sure you know when something is not right.
This could happen when they’re with me… Don’t you worry, I’m on top of it. I’ll always be advocating for your dogs.

Next week is going to be extremely hot. Please make sure you’ve got water available at all times, that your dog has access to shade, and if you’ve got a breed that doesn’t do well with the heat, keep them indoors, except for potty breaks. I’ll have 3 kiddie pools here, but we won’t be spending too much time outside, we will be in the climate controlled kennel.

It’s spring break for the next couple of weeks. We have 13 poodle mixes, and 1 pure bred out here in the river stone area so we’re not bathing dogs all day thanks to the mud. Who can guess the pure bred dog?

UPDATE: Thanks to all of my friends and clients, Brutus has been adopted! His mom Shirley will be available for adoption as soon as she is spayed(on April 11th) and recovered! Brutus is still looking for his forever home. He is 11 weeks old today. Brutus is crate trained, and potty trained 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Please contact me if you are interested in adopting him, or help by sharing my post.

Brûlée, a little over 9 weeks old, learning the “down” command. Keep your training sessions very short at this age, and end on a good rep!
