This cat came to THOK from a feral colony as part of our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) outreach program. Completely feral, she has had no human socialization and is terrified of human touch. Unfortunately, by the time we were able to rescue her, she was already heavily pregnant and just days away from giving birth.
When working with feral cats, we often have little to no background information—sometimes not even an accurate age. After delivering her kittens, it quickly became evident that she was a first-time mother who did not instinctively know how to care for her newborns. Thankfully, her dedicated foster stepped in immediately, removing the placentas, warming the kittens, and providing supplemental neonatal care and feedings while the mother adjusted to her new role. Though wary of human presence, she accepted the lifesaving intervention. Had she given birth in the wild, it is almost certain her kittens would not have survived their first day.
We often hear the phrase, “Someone should do something.” The truth is, that someone is you.
Spaying and neutering is the most effective way to prevent suffering among feral and stray cats. Even if a cat cannot be socialized, they deserve a life free from the risks of overpopulation, disease, and hardship.
