𝟗 𝐕𝐀-𝐗-𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄𝐓𝐘 𝐓𝐈𝐏𝐒
I am a huge proponent of giving va-X-ines as little as possible, but sometimes it has to happen. In this post I’m going to discuss the things you can to do to try to make the process safer.
Please know, ensuring immunity is the most important and is the best thing you can do for your dog, whether puppy or adult. The primary concern is alway a high functioning immune system - a high quality diet and limiting chemicals is the best way to achieve this.
Also know, puppies that feed off their mothers are transferred her colostrum. This provides immunity for the pup for the first 16-20 weeks in life. Va-X-inating sooner than than 16 weeks can wipe out that protective colostrum. The only exception is if the mother herself doesn’t have a strong immune system. This is why it’s important to find a breeder that ensures their dogs are healthy. You may also ask a breeder to refrain from va-X-inating and take the matters into your hand when you get your pup.
Here are 9️⃣ things you can do to help make the process a bit safer:
💉Only Va-X-inate Healthy Dogs/Ask for a Va-X-ine Waiver
A responsible vet should never suggest giving your dog any kind of shot if they are not completely healthy. Doing so can exacerbate illness and possibly do further harm to an already compromised immune system. Dogs who are dealing with autoimmune diseases, cancer, liver or kidney issues, an infection, allergies/skin problems or even stress from a move or surgery should NEVER be va-X-inated until they are healthy. (Never allow a pet that is having surgery to have a va-X-ine at the same time either).
If your dog has documented health issues ask your vet to apply for a vaccination extension or better yet, exemption. This is a difficult task, but if your vet doesn’t go for it, search for a vet that will, if possible.
💉Prepare Ahead of Time, Detox After
2-3 Days before the appointment and 2-3 days after, give your dog a detox product such as PetMoringa in higher doses or Adored Beast Anti-Vaccinosis.
Probiotics like Raw Goats Milk mixed with water a few times throughout the days can help flush their system. And if you wanted to take it a step further you could do Epsom Salt bath by at least getting the dogs paw and butt to sit in the water. Adored Beast REBALANCER (aka ANTI-VACCINOSIS) - Rebalancer assists in the removal of associated va-X-ine side effects without removing any vaccine benefits. Thuja and silicea were carefully selected for their ability to help clear out the ill effects of over-vaX-inaction.

💉 Administer One $hot At A Time, Spaced 3 Weeks Apart
I prefer to only va-X-inate puppies once and then that’s it. Their immunity can take care of them after that. Should you have to va-X-inate more than once, ALWAYS space them out 3 weeks apart.
Depending if you’re in the US or Canada the protocols are different due to our lame Canadian laws. Sadly, Canadians are subject to combo shots and don’t have a choice otherwise.
🇺🇸 USA Residents:
- At 16 weeks old, request a single PARVO shot.
- At 19 weeks old, request a single DISTEMPER shot.
- That’s it - done!!! No more, unless you must get rabies. However, I recommend waiting until 1 year old to get the rabies.
🇨🇦 Canadian Residents:
- At 16 weeks old, request the first puppy shot (It’s a combo which should only include distemper, parvovirus and parainfluenza).
- That’s it - done!!! No more, unless you must get the rabies. However, I recommend waiting until 1 year old to get the rabies.
- However, if you do get the other 2 shots that are in the series ALWAY space them apart 3, preferably 4 weeks.
💉 Pay Attention For Adverse Reactions/Report Any Reactions
Reactions that may appear shortly after can include facial swelling, vomiting, lethargy, circulatory shock, skin issues, seizures, behavioural changes. If you notice any of these report them to your vet immediately and have them documented. Having them documented could possibly get you out of having to va-X-inate again. And if your pet appears distressed afterwards, contact your vet.
Reactions that may happen days or months after can be hard to recognize, so pay close attention. Anything stated above or can include cancer at the injection site, autoimmune disease, chronic digestive problems, allergies, muscle weakness or atrophy, seizures or behaviour changes. This may be hard to prove but be diligent in at least having it documented in the dogs file and get a copy of it.
💉Safest Time
Use the day and time to your advantage in case there is a reaction. Make the appointment for early morning, early in the week. Also, staying around the vets office for an hour to make sure there are no immediate reactions just in case. Having a reaction when the vets office is closed or to far to get to can be dangerous, or fatal.
💉 Request Thimerosal-Free 3 Year
The Thimerosal option is mercury based and has been linked to adverse reactions. IMRAB 3 TF is the one you want. This is the Thimerosal-free version, 3 year. I never recommend the 1 year, but if it were the 1 year it would read IMRAB 1 TF. Make sure you can see the “TF” on the label. Call ahead when making the appointment and request this as not all vets carry it. You may have to vet shop to find an office that does carry it or can special order it for you.
💉Don’t Administer Within A Week Of Travel
You never know when a reaction may occur, but try to be as proactive as you can and wait at least a week. If they are ok at that point, it should give you better peace of mind.
💉Never Administer Rabies Yourself
This goes mostly for US Residents since it’s damn near impossible for us Canadians to get the va-X-ines anyways, but since rabies is the legal requirement you will need to have it administered by a practising veterinarian in order to meet legal requirements. If not, you may be forced to re-vax and that will not be good. Not to mention, having them administered at a vets office is safer in case something goes wrong.
💉 Never allow the Lepto, Lyme or Bordetella shots. They are not necessary, can come with wicked side effects and can make your dog sick or even kill them. And no vet will ever take responsibility if anything happens.
Taking these steps can help control the situation as much as you possible can, and hopefully not have any issues during this already stressful time.
