If you are in an area where authorities advise or order you to evacuate: Evacuate Immediately! Bring your pre-packed evacuation kit (“Go Bag”), prescription medicines in a waterproof, childproof container, along with your critical records.
Before you leave turn off propane tanks. Unplug small appliances to reduce potential damage from power surges that may occur. Turn off utilities if told to do so by authorities to prevent damage to your home or within the community. If you shut your gas off, a professional is required to turn it back on.
If you are not in an area that is recommended for evacuation, follow your plans for sheltering in place. Before wind impact, take refuge in your pre-designated storm shelter, or in your pre-designated small, interior, windowless room in a sturdy building on the lowest level that is not subject to flooding. Stay away from glass windows and doors.
Use flashlights or battery-powered lanterns. Do not use candles due to extreme fire risk.
Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning! Generators, grills, camp stoves, hibachis, lanterns, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices should never be used inside a home, basement, garage – or even outside near an open window.
Flooding likely? Move to higher ground before it begins. After flooding begins, never walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters. Remember, Turn Around! Don’t Drown!
