COURTESY POST, DOG IS NOT AT THE CLINIC

Meet June! She is a 1.5 year old American Pit Bull Terrier cross who just wants to love and be loved. June gets along with other dogs and cats for the most part but seems to be too interested in livestock and not in the good way. She is Spayed, up to date on vaccines, wormer, flea, tick and heartworm preventative. She is allergic to chicken so I have her on Purina Pro Plan sensitive skin and stomach salmon and rice formula dog food. She is kennel trained and house trained for the most part, sometimes she has accidents if she is left in the kennel/house for more than 4-5 hours without a potty break.

There will be a rehoming fee to ensure she goes to a good loving home. She will come with her special dog food and her slow feeder. Please send me a message if you are interested in meeting her!

Client Education Post #2

Let’s talk anxiety and microchips!

Dogs can get anxiety, just like their human friends. With the Fourth of July coming up, it is important to know your dog and how the loud celebrations will affect them. Fireworks are very scary for some of our furry friends, and it’s up to us to make them feel safe during these celebrations. Think of it like us having a panic attack, they don’t understand what is going on, just that it is loud and unnerving!

Signs of anxiety in dogs:
• Panting
• Pacing
• Trembling or shaking
• Drooling
• Hiding
• Avoiding their owner
• Being irritable or aggressive
• Keeping their tail tucked low
• Pulling ears back
• Dilated eyes

Loud noises can cause great distress to our animals and can be very terrifying. This fear they are experiencing can cause their heart to race, puts them on a higher alert, and can cause them to be destructive.

Here are some ways you can help ease the fear for them:

• Use white noise. You can play the radio or keep the tv on, or you can find white noise playlists designed for dogs.
• Desensitize them. Before the holiday, try playing fireworks sounds on low volume, and give your dog treats during this time. Gradually increase the volume, all while giving your dog positive reinforcement.
• Use calming aids. You can find wraps, vests, or use t-shirts to apply pressure that can be soothing to them. Just like a weighted blanket can be soothing to humans, slight pressure can be soothing to our animals.
• Use pheromones. This mimics the pheromones a mother dog emits to soothe their puppies. You can find different forms of these in any pet store. They can be a spray, diffuser, or a collar.
• Medications. Talk to your veterinarian about what medications they can offer to safely calm your pet.

MICROCHIPS:

Microchips are a great investment in your dog in case they run away during fireworks. They are not a GPS, they won’t locate your dog for you, but if the dog is picked up and brought to a veterinary office or animal shelter, the staff can scan your dog and the identification number will pop up for them to look up your information.
A microchip is a small electronic chip, that is implanted under the skin, usually between the shoulder blades. They are about the size of a grain of rice and are inserted with a needle. It is similar to your pet getting a vaccine shot but does not require the dog to be sedated. The dog’s tissue will bond with the microchip, keeping it in place. It is rare for the chip to move. Most chips last 25 years, so you don’t have to worry about them not being a good investment.

HOW DOES A MICROCHIP WORK?

• Microchips don’t contain a battery; a scanner will activate the chip by passing radio waves over the area where the microchip was placed. The microchip transmits the number to the scanner, and the person scanning the dog can look up that number to pull up the owner’s contact information.
• You can think of the microchip number as your pet’s personal identification number, or a "SSN" for dogs.

Our clinic has personally had great success in reuniting dogs with their owners when they have a microchip. We can confidently say at least 90% success rate. As an owner, it is also very important to keep your information updated, if you move or get a new phone number, update it ASAP! The only times we have been unable to reunite lost animals with their owners is due to outdated information, or we simply could not get ahold of the owner. These situations have been very few.

With the holiday coming up, we want to remind you of our offer of a Fourth of July package
• $10 off a microchip
• No office call charged for this package
• Anxiety meds given to calm your animal
• This gives you a savings of $37.50!!!!

We are going to be doing a weekly post on pet owner education, issues you can look for to better care for your furry babies! Our first post is about GVD in dogs!

Gastric Dilation Volvulus (GVD)
What is GVD?
• GVD is a condition in which a dog’s stomach fills with gas, food, air, or foam, causing bloat. The stomach will continue to expand and twist into a dangerous position, cutting off blood supply and putting pressure on internal organs. If you find your dog is bloated, please call a veterinarian IMMEDIATELY.

Who does it affect?
• All dogs can be affected by bloat, but large breeds and deep chested dogs are the most susceptible to GVD. Great Danes, St. Bernards, German Shepherds, Weimaraners, Golden Retrievers, Wolf Hounds, and Blood Hounds are some of the most common breeds that are affected by GVD.

What are signs of bloating and GVD?
• Enlarged/distended abdomen
• Vomiting with nothing coming out
• Pale nose/gums
• Pacing and restlessness
• Excessive drooling
• Rapid or shallow breathing
• Collapsing
• Dog is in shock

What to do if you find your dog is bloated?
• GET TO THE VET IMMEDIATELY!!!
• Vet will release the pressure on the abdomen
• Begin treatment for shock right away
• Determine if surgery is needed

What are some things an owner can do to prevent GVD?
• Do not give large meals at once, break them into smaller meals throughout the day or twice a day
• Slow down your dog’s eating, offer them a puzzle bowl or dispenser so they cannot eat too quickly
• Let the dog relax for up to 2 hours after a meal, do not encourage immediate exercise
• Have water readily available at all times
• Add canned food into your dog’s diet
• Talk to your veterinarian about Gastropexy surgery, more commonly called “stomach tacking”. This is when the veterinarian surgically attaches the stomach to the body wall, preventing the stomach from twisting.
• Know where your nearest emergency veterinarian facility is

Gramps and Fox are in need of a home now more than ever!
Gramps is slowly gaining weight after coming to us far malnourished. He has even warmed up to our staff.
Fox is a smart cookie and sweet to humans. She has gotten better at ignoring when other dogs are around her but still cannot go to a home with other pets.
Please consider giving them a chance!
