When shared that they had a tiny (seriously, so tiny, she’s 7lbs) naked ween mix that needed to get pulled from the shelter, I immediately said yes. I’ve been fostering Carly with a local rescue for the last couple weeks. She is a legit angel of a puppy. If you’re looking for a new dog, I couldn’t recommend Carly enough.

Carly is 7-9 months old, about 25-30 lbs. I don’t think she’ll get much bigger. She’s up to date with all vaccines, spayed, and heartworm negative. She was pulled from Colleton County Animal Shelter when they were facing a mass euthanasia due to overcrowding. She’s a little timid at first but within a week she was acting like a puppy. Shes potty trained and crate trained. She doesn’t bark. She’s cat curious but respectful. She’s super tolerant of Archie’s bullish ways.

We are working on learning to chew only on toys. But if she takes something she shouldn’t have, she lets you swap it out with a toy without any protest or fight. We are also working on her leash skills. Walking outside is still a little scary for her so she doesn’t go far and will pull to go back to “safety”. I took her to a bar during an adoption event the other day. She did wonderfully there. The only scary part was walking across the parking lot. She was happy to meet other dogs, people, and children.

This is the post I’ve never wanted to make, after making the call I didn’t want to make…I’ll be saying goodbye to Dallas Pupperoni on Tuesday. I’ve spent the last several days agonizing over this decision, trying to balance his quality of life and me wanting him forever. I don’t want to wait until something catastrophic happens or his life is void of any joy. So we’re going spend the next week snuggling, napping, and having some fun. Oh, and lots of snackies.

So if it hasn’t been obvious, Malted Mutts has been on a bit of a pause. It started as a normal January break cause it’s typically slow AF. As I’ve spent more time at home with Dallas Pupperoni I’ve noticed a pretty steep decline in his cognitive functions. The biggest change has been persistent pacing while I’m at work and overnight. Most nights I’m up several times a night between the hours of midnight and 4am. It’s pretty exhausting but I’ve been managing. Recently I set up a camera while I was working and saw how Dallas has been spending his days…just hours and hours walking in circles. Obviously that’s not a good way for him to spend his time. Yesterday’s vet appointment was discuss his quality of life.

It wasn’t a fun discussion but necessary. We are going to give some Prozac a shot to see if that helps him calm down, especially during the day. My hope is this gives us a couple more months together but the reality of the situation is our time together is winding down. So what does this mean for Malted Mutts…I’ll do some markets here and there but right now my focus is making sure Dallas Puppy has the best possible time while he can. Eventually, we’ll get back to business but until then stick around for adventures with Dallas.

Today’s the day! Dallas is 17! I got Dallas when I was a junior in college. I had signed a lease for a new place with my college boyfriend for senior year and then he dumped me. So, being 20, I got on the internet and bought a puppy. He was in Oklahoma but would fly out of Dallas to get to me in Albany. His flight leaving Dallas was delay, causing him to miss his connecting flight in Chicago. Of course, I didn’t know this, so when I got to the airport and there was no puppy, I panicked. Chicago couldn’t find him. Eventually we find out he’s on his way to Albany. I skipped class to go back to the airport and pick up and instantly fell in love with this tiny little puppy. I decided to name him Dallas since that’s where all the flight problems began. Since then he’s been my little buddy. He been there for me my entire adult life. Graduating, moving away from all my friends and family, new job, new relationships, adding another dog, fostering…the list goes on. I know our time is winding down and it seems impossible to picture life without him. Until then, we’re gonna do all the things he enjoys as often as possible. Sitting down and realizing I only have 3 markets from now until the end of the year! After Dallas’s seizure scares, I decided I wouldn’t do as many markets as I’ve done in the past this holiday season so he’s not spending all his time home alone. I didn’t realize how little I actually signed up for though! Oops. The website works, it’s not super pretty, but you can order with shipping or free pickup in North Charleston, if you can’t catch me at a market!
