I know I am gonna be mad on July 5th because of all the people who didn't properly prepare for their dogs (and other pets) to be SAFE on July 4th. NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE! It's a week away. And yes, it would be nice if people would use noiseless fireworks or not at all. But that's not gonna happen. It's not just animals who shake in fear on this day but also people who have PTSD.
Make your plans now to keep your pets safe!!!

Myth: All Dogs Know How to Swim 🐕🌊

Swimming can provide excellent exercise and mental stimulation for dogs, but contrary to what most people believe, not all dogs are strong swimmers and some may not enjoy this summer activity.

If you’re planning to take your dog swimming for the first time, the first step you should take is to make sure it’s something they want to do. If they show interest in the activity, the next step is keeping them safe.

I CAN NOT stress this enough! DO YOUR HOMEWORK before you choose "x" dog. Every breed has requirements. If it doesn't fit your lifestyle, pick another dog. Better yet....go to your local rescue or shelter and tell the staff what kind of lifestyle you have. THEY can direct you to the best dog for you. It's not only for your good but the dog's as well. PLEASE don't pick a dog because it is "pretty" or how "handsome" you think it looks. Shelters are overflowing.

One of the saddest parts of my job is the sheer volume of rehoming requests I get from dog owners. Several times a week I receive a call, message or email, and it is always the same - Do I “know somebody who wants a [6-18 months old] [highly energetic working dog]? The dog needs more activities than the family can provide.”
This week it has been a Heeler, a Lab and yesterday a Border Collie. Other weeks it is a German Shorthair pointer, a German Shepherd and a Goldendoodle. Or a Weimaraner, a Malinois, an Aussie, a Husky … you get the idea.
First - no, I likely do not know anybody who would be a good match for the dog. I have a list of people looking for dogs - currently it has zero names - and a list of people with high-energy breeds wanting to re-home their dogs. This list is very, very long.
Please do not get a puppy if you cannot meet the needs of his breed. The vast majority of dogs needs more than a full food bowl and a pat on the head. Especially during the first 2 years of a dog’s life, expect him to require DAILY training. Throughout the dog’s life you should plan on providing enrichment, mental stimulation and physical activities. You have work, errands to run, a family to take care off, TV shows to watch, books to read - but your dog only has YOU.
If you chose a working-bred dog, expect him to not be content with a 15 minute leash walk. Your dog needs more. He is only doing what he was bred to do - having a high energy level, intense desire to move and work, no quits.
If you want a beginner dog or a laid-back dog - there are plenty of lap dog breeds who have lower exercise needs (though they still need some!). There are plenty of adult or senior dogs in rescue. There are retired racing Greyhounds. There are shelters looking for volunteers and fosters - that way you can get your feet wet before committing to a certain breed.
If you get a puppy of a working breed, expect him to take up a big chunk of your time for many years to come!
Please don't first acquire and then rehome your dogs because of who they are - instead, invest time into researching your chosen breed upfront.

Not All Dogs Like Other Dogs
(Found it posted in a breed group with thousands of members so hopefully the word is spreading.)
The other day I was at the local public park (not a dog park, but dogs are allowed there). We were walking along in a high movement area so I had my dog on a leash. Another dog, off leash, sees us and starts approaching.
My dog needs her space so we start moving away, but the dog got to us before we could leave. My dog was stressing a little so I politely said to the woman, sorry my dog doesn't want to play and ushered her dog away.
Her dog gets the message and moves on.
Quite good, right? Here comes the juicy part:
As I’m leaving the owner comes to me with a speech more or less like this:
Hey, if your dog is nervous and doesn’t even want to play with other dogs, go somewhere else! Don’t come to the park and ruin other dogs fun.
I heard this and a wave of fury started taking over, but suddenly I think I had a lightbulb moment and switched gears completely.
With the biggest, friendliest smile, I opened my arms as wide as I could and said Ohhhhh! Come here... I want to give you a BIG hug!
With panic in her eyes, she backs up, speechless and quickly starts walking away.
I said "Hey, don’t run, I’m so friendly, come on, I only want to give you a hug! I’m friendly I promise... I just want to Hug You!"
Still speechless and backing away with terror now, I said "Wait, You don’t want my friendly hug?"
She yelled No!
I said "Well neither does my dog! Have a nice day.!!!"
As I walked away, I saw her just standing there, speechless and she was leashing her dog! 😅
I think I’ll try this approach more often 🤣

Any Doxie lovers?

UPDATE: We have not received any dogs from this hoarding case at this time. It’s a complicated situation involving a deceased owner. We are hopeful the family will do the right thing and allow rescue to save the dogs on the property. We will update as we receive more information. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Update: We’ve received over 300 foster applications and countless messages/emails for these dogs. We are now closing the foster applications for them. We are working on reaching out to everyone who has applied. If you are interested in fostering a different dog, we still encourage you to apply; other breeds need your help to!

Fosters need in New Orleans, LA

Another local rescue has asked us to help with a shocking hoarding case. Over 60 dachshunds are needing rescue placements. There are dachshunds of all ages including moms with nursing puppies. At this time we have no additional information about the dogs and no photos. We will update when we have more info.

If you’re available to foster, please submit an application on our website, takepawsrescue.org. If you’re an approved foster for us, please contact your foster coordinator if you’d like to help with this case. As always, we will provide all supplies and vet care.

DO WHAT YOU LOVE!
🐾🐕🐈🦜🐓🐐🐎🐇🐢🐍🦎🦆🦋🐷😍
I have been blessed with a love for all animals. I believe God gave me a special "knack" and a ton of patience to work with them. Not only do I love my work with them, I also love helping people. A few weeks ago I was able to help a friend in need. I got a text saying she was at the hospital and was not able to get home to care for her dogs. Could I help? I had just gotten home, but immediately responded that I could. Now, I had never met her dogs, but knew of them from FB posts. When I got there I was met with loud barking from inside the house. I knew there was a big lab and a hound dog. So, I quietly went into the house and met "Tug" for the first time. I was armed with tasty cookies. This was the biggest Lab I have ever seen! He is enormous! Tug was scared, but I knew what to do. Ever so quietly and slowly I made my way to him and just waited. Hound dog, Daisy was in a crate expressing, her displeasure of seeing a stranger in her house. It wasn't more than a few minutes and Tug wanted to sniff me and see what I held in my hand. He was still "on guard", and I let him sniff to his heart's content. Then I showed him the cookie and he warily took it and ran away with it. Now...... he was curious and came back to see me. A few more cookies and he let me touch him. It wasn't long after that I was able to reassure him all was ok and we could all go outside. Did I say he is the biggest Lab I have ever seen? So as we went out, I let Daisy out of her crate. She followed him outside. Daisy "Booo woooed" at me a little bit outside, but when she saw Tug getting all the attention, she wanted some too. They both relaxed a bit more and we became better friends. I let them run around for a long time so they had an extended break. I took care of feeding, etc.... and then said goodbye. This made me so very happy to be able to help my friend in a time of need. And even better, I made 2 new dog friends!

There's no right or wrong answer when it comes to adopting sibling puppies, but there are careful considerations that must be made.

DO WHAT YOU LOVE! My First Snake!!!!
😍🐾🐟🐈🐕🐍🦎
About a week ago I spent 5 days with a whole big crew of pets! I had my first snake! I wasn't afraid though, my brother had snakes growing up. I held them all the time. But I must admit, I really fell for the 2 Jack Russell Terriers. They are sweeeeet, sweeeeet boys!
Here they all are: 6 dogs, 2 cats, 2 lizards (the lizards were hiding), 2 fish, 1 snake!

If you do what you love, you will never really "work" a day in your life!

Do What You Love!

My love for all animals goes all the way back to childhood. I can remember everywhere we went, I was always looking for the animals. I wanted to hold and pet them. Taking any pet home and caring for that special one was always at the top of my list. One photo after another depicts me petting, holding or reaching for an animal to love. I wanted to be a veterinarian, zoo keeper, animal trainer, animal welfare worker, breeder, forest ranger, farmer, rancher….basically any job in which I could spend my time working on the behalf of God’s creatures. I have spent my life caring for so many animals it would make your head spin. I worked for a veterinarian for quite a few years. I owned and operated my own Exotic Bird Breeding business called Pirate’s Cove Aviary, where I bred parakeets, cockatiels, loves birds, African Grey parrots, Indian Ringneck parakeet and more. Later on, I saw a need for people to have a safe place they could board their cats, so I opened Catnip Cabin and very soon had a regular clientele.

Recently, I worked for Hallie Hill Animal Sanctuary for almost 7 years. The experience I gained there was phenomenal. I am now the sole proprietor of Beautiful Mind Canine Dog Training and Pet Care Services. Today, I have the opportunity to work for YOU!

Our Pet Care Services cover a broad spectrum including both pets and most farm animals. I am experienced, professional, dependable, insured and a member of Pet Professional Guild and Professional United Pet Sitters. I also train dogs and would like to invite you on the journey of unlocking the Beautiful Mind of the Canine, your best friend, the dog.
