It’s been a very heavy couple of weeks here at the farm. Many of our amazing herd has headed on to their final chapters. Goldwyn returned to the woman we bought him from 15+ years ago, and will spend his retirement days in a big field in sunny Ocala. Bella is retiring at a wonderful facility in the panhandle of Florida where they will take great care of her. Stella/Phoebe moved to the mountains of NC to retire - if you remember how itchy her skin was here in the south with the bugs and the humidity, I am confident she will feel much better in no time in her new home! Smoothie and the barn cats (thank you Jen!) returned to the LowCountry with our dear friend Shelby, who also has Lady. I put a lot of time and thought into honoring Sondra’s wishes and carefully selecting the best possible homes for them, but these were still incredibly difficult decisions to make. Every time an animal leaves this farm they take a piece of my heart with them, but it brings me comfort to know that they all landed in the best possible places and will continue to be so loved. I could go on forever about all the amazing things that these horses have done for us over the years, teaching so many young riders and earning so many blue ribbons along the way, but I think we all know just how special each of them are. Feel free to share a memory in the comments and join me in saying, to Goldie, Bella, Stella/Phoebe, Smoothie, and even Cheeto, Jersey and Bandido; thank you and happy retirement!🤍🕊️

Come take a quick tour around Driftwood Stable! Featured here is the main barn, the ring (or as much of it as I could fit as it’s SO big!), pastures and tack room. There is an 8 stall main barn, a 3 stall shed row and a 5 stall mini/pony barn. We have 8 turn-outs ranging from run-ins to big fields, a tack room and a separate feed/hay/shavings building plus our big jump field which is fenced in. We have an excellent lesson program and now are taking boarders. Call 404-858-7241 to schedule a tour! (Barn dog Tater is in the first pic helping me with night check).

We are beyond happy that Ladyhawke is thriving in her new home back in the Lowcountry. She was instrumental in the founding of our program and touched so many riders lives. We look forward to seeing her new little rider enjoying her as well. Thank you Lady for your service as one of the best lesson horses we’ve ever been graced to work with!

Smoothie does it all! Today he took Harlow on her first outing and rode around the neighborhood after a good warm-up in the ring. Not all riders have the privilege or availability to be able to ride outside of the ring and explore the world on horseback, but it is so important as rider to have these skills and be able to control your horse to be able to have an enjoyable hack off property.

This fall. Driftwood Stable Equestrian has opened their new horseback riding program to give our students an opportunity to be part of a highly acclaimed equine education program at our facility. The students are committed to learning organized, comprehensive horse care and management- from the grooming, feeding, learning all parts of the horse and tack, and basic medical care, to the fine points of horse/barn safety, proper riding techniques, and handling of emergency situations. They are applying the responsibility and respect we strive to impart in our students to this new adventure, and we (their instructors) are extremely proud of all the achievements and advancements their hard work is rewarding them with!! These young riders are making great strides and we love to be a part of that with them ☺️🐴

Teach the student that shows up.
I’ve gotten what some have referred to as “difficult” students… the slow thinkers, the dyslexics, those with shockingingly minimal proprioception, the nervous over thinkers, the physically challenged,…
Whatever. I teach them the best I can. They learn what they learn. It’s not my job to decide if their speed of progress is acceptable or not- that’s up to them! If they are happy and having fun, and they keep showing up, (and yes, pay their bill) then I keep teaching them the absolute best I know how!!!!
I’ve had students that progress [what to me feels] painfully slow at first, but then things click and, like grass growing, you can’t see it, but there it is!!! Some are slow thinkers but fast learners. Some have a challenging learning style that pushes me to become a better teacher. Sometime kids show no RIDING progress, but parents rave about how the child is better behaved and a better listener for 1-2 days following their lesson- that’s progress!!!! Who cares if they still bumble around in posting trot, and can’t figure out diagonals. Sometimes adults struggle for awhile until they get strong/fit enough and then suddenly make a big leap. Sometimes fear issues can hold someone back for what feels like forever, but then they “suddenly”, after a year of repetition, break free and find their confidence.

Progress isn’t linear, and sometimes we are using the wrong metrics to measure success anyways. If two hours at the barn is the only time a parent isn’t worried about their child taking their own life, than who cares if the kid doesn’t want to trot and is content steering at the walk.

Sometimes us pros think “good” students have to be like us- athletic with big goals, and dedication to spare. But not everyone is in it for that, and that’s okay- I’ll meet them where they are and teach the best I can… using THEIR metrics- not mine.

Btw- pic is most instructor’s dream student. Quick learner, good feel, knows left from right, memorizes a pattern quickly, brave without being reckless…. But I would be out of business if I could only teach kids like this one. 😉
