PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD – If your pet care professional isn't talking about; Choice, Communication, Compassion, Consent, Emotions, Empathy, Partnership, Respect, and Trust; you NEED a NEW pet care professional. Before training a dog, you must have a relationship based on compassion, empathy, and respect. To achieve that, you must be able to understand your dog's needs, emotions, and how they communicate. Having the ability to make choices and to give consent is essential to the mental health of every living thing. We can develop a lifelong partnership with our dog only after we understand all these things.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD–If your dog trainer, or anyone, ever suggests you do something to your dog that you would NEVER do to a human toddler, FIND A NEW DOG TRAINER!

The use of pain, force, and fear, tools like shock, prong, and shock collars, as well as sq**rt bottles and shake cans, are inhumane, cruel, and unnecessary.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD – As I woke my dog, Muppy, this morning, I told her, “Today’s BNI Tuesday,” whereupon she asked, “What’s BNI?” I explained that BNI was an organization that helped people network so that they could grow their businesses. I explained that my chapter, Paul Bunyan BNI, is made up of friends and colleagues with a wide variety of experiences and skills, and we all worked together as a group, making us more effective than just a single person. She looked at me, no doubt thinking about breakfast, and commented, “So BNI Tuesday is like Taco Tuesday. The organization is the tortilla, and your friends and colleagues are all the ingredients that make that plain tortilla delicious.” Dogs, they’re pretty smart.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD – -93% of US Pet Owners Agree – Pets Are Part of the Family! – It’s Time to Drop the Term “Pet Owner"

This morning, I read a summary of a 2024 survey conducted by the market research company Packaged Facts. The summary reports that 76% of people in the US with pets strongly agree that pets are part of the family and that 17% agree that pets are family members. That is a total of 93%, which is something to be excited about as it suggests that most of us who share our lives with pets believe they should be treated as family.

Since I brought home my first puppy in 1975, I’ve never considered my pet to be property or something I owned. I have always felt that a pet is a living, breathing being, and when I brought them into my life, I accepted the responsibility for their care and meeting their needs. I’ve learned so much since 1975 and know that my duties towards my pets are even more significant today than in 1975.

As science continues to make discoveries, we learn that other species have emotions and greater cognitive abilities than we previously believed. I hope this new data means that 93% of people with pets in the US will treat their pets with the same level of kindness and compassion they would give to any human family member. It’s time to drop the term “pet owner” from our vocabulary and replace it with something else.
