Second Chance German Shepherd Rescue SCGSR is a non-profit, volunteer-run, foster-based GSD rescue serving the greater Bay Area region of No. CA. with existing pets.

Our primary focus is rescuing GSDs from life threatening situations in overcrowded shelters where they are in danger of being put to sleep. Adoptable Dogs: https://www.scgsr.org/available-dogs

We adopt our dogs into loving, responsible permanent homes. German Shepherd Dogs in our care are spayed or neutered, and receive basic veterinary care while they await placement in their permanent homes. We

work with area shelters and other rescue groups to develop a network of support for German Shepherd Dogs in need. We get most of our dogs from the shelters where their previous owners did not provide much training or socialization so they tend to need some training and/or management in order to successfully integrate them into a new household. We have an adoption process to help decide which type of home would be good for the typical dog we get into our rescue. Our adoption process is:

Fill out and submit our adoption questionnaire
Have a phone interview
Have an in person home visit - this requires you to be located in "some parts" of the following areas where our volunteers live so they can do the required in person home visit: East Bay, South Bay, Peninsula, San Francisco and Marin areas, and in and around the Fresno, Sacramento and Roseville areas. We do not adopt outside of our volunteer area for the safety of our dogs as we need to be able to remove them from a home if things are not working out well e.g. Adopters who already have had an approved home visit have priority to adopt available dogs. Our adoption fees are $350 for dogs under one year, $300 for dogs one year to six years, and $250 for dogs older than six years. If you do not own your own home your landlord must sign our landlord approval form. Due to insurance restrictions children must be 6 years of age or older, living with or regularly visiting, and fencing must be 5' or higher and secure. Adopting families must reside in the State of California (sorry, no exceptions.)

We can’t be the only ones that reaaaally want to do this sometimes… 🤷🏼‍♀️😂

We love CalPaws. CalPaws says yes when others say no. Mamas and their full litter- yes. Not just yes but a dozen times a year. Amputees-yes multiple times a year. 7 orphaned bottle babies-that’s always a yes.

CalPaws rescues over 400 dogs per year. The Second Chance network was so special to us- we’re hoping to tap into that magic for some help- can any one foster or adopt one of these gals and save a life?

It’s okay if you can’t rescue, it’s okay if you can’t foster. But can you buy some goodies for dogs in need? I love this group. They rescue over 400 dogs a year on a boot strap budget. Let’s help them out and hook em up!

We’ll be updating the status of the hoarding situation soon, but I wanted to share one of the dogs we were able to take during our visit on Memorial Day. Deebo is thriving in his foster home because of the support CalPaws has received from followers like you. Thank you!! ❤️

Deebo is accepting applications to adopt through CalPaws K9 rescue, www.calpaws.org

** Update ** Calpaws K9 Rescue was able to leave today with 2 more dogs from this situation (photo in the comments). Both dogs were able to go directly into foster homes thanks to your donations and involvement sharing and liking our posts. One of Second Chance’s former foster homes volunteered to foster and we couldn’t be more excited. Two other past Second Chance Volunteers assisted in evaluations and documentation! Thank you!

CalPaws has been networking with other rescues to clear out the Shepherds, get them spayed and neutered, including the parents of all of these litters. We’re going back Friday and hope to update you with more good news.

Today with Alex Clark I visited an extremely challenging situation. We left with 2 of the nicest dogs I have ever evaluated, but we left around 2-dozen German Shepherds behind.

These are all social, friendly souls who don’t have a mean bone in their bodies. Many have matted fur with foxtails entering their coats and toes. Some have awkward gaits and are in need of a medical evaluation. They’re all 10 months- 3 years of age, and they are all siblings of sorts. The result of multiple litters of a backyard breeder with an overworked 5 year old Mama.

The breeder has until the end of the month to find a home for every dog and has agreed to surrender them to rescue.

Calpaws K9 Rescue is asking for help. They have taken 4 dogs so far and are returning Monday, hopefully for more. If you can foster, if you can adopt, if you can refer us to other rescue organizations (even out of State), CalPaws can make it happen.

And if you are looking to adopt- these are dogs I would put around my kids, sociable enough to dine at outdoor restaurants or go camping, dogs I’d absolutely try with cats or small dogs.

All need spay, neuter, and full medical so if you don’t think you can help any other way, consider skipping lunch out on Friday and shoot them $20 bucks- it makes a difference. Donation link below.

We found a diamond!

Though SCGSR is no longer a functioning rescue- many of our volunteers still have their hand in rescue. One out our volunteers came across a diamond in the “ruff” at the East County Animal Shelter in Dublin.

Mabel is approximately 1 year old and a gem! She handled easy, loves everyone, and is dog friendly! She is adoptable through the Shelter- or CalPaws K9 Rescue has agreed to help her if a foster comes forward for her.

Come on SCGSR fans! Share, like and comment to help this amazing girl. Videos of her via their website 👉 https://www.alamedacountysheriff.org/community/adopt-a-pet

Although SCGSR is no longer an active rescue, we plan to share dogs from other rescues from time-to-time to help them get more attention and hopefully adopted. Please help us share Jack. Jack is a great dog and through no fault of his own, he hasn't been adopted. Being a mix is challenging for Jack in a GSD rescue. If you or someone you know is looking for a great dog, look no further than Jack.

They say all good things must come to an end. Second Chance German Shepherd Rescue (SCGSR) has made the difficult decision to cease operations immediately. 9 years ago, SCGSR embarked on a mission to rescue GSDs from life threatening situations and with the help of wonderful and experienced volunteers we saved 505 lives. We shared a lot of wonderful times together celebrating when each rescued dog that came through our program found their new family. We are thankful to have met so many people along the way who just wanted to be a part of it all. As we say goodbye to this chapter in our lives, we want to thank everyone who made SCGSR possible. We couldn’t have made this journey without the help of so many, including our volunteers, donors, adopters and Facebook fans; you truly made our dream a reality.

Well it took almost a year, but Chief's forever family finally found him today! He went to a wonderful couple and a lovely home with 6 acres for his favorite sport of chasing balls. He'll share his new home with horses, cows and a 16-year-old former ranch cat. Congratulations Chief, you are finally home. A big "thank you" to Terry who fostered him that whole time, helping him to build his confidence and providing him with a loving home while he waited.

Hogan Goes Home! We couldn't understand why Hogan wasn't being adopted and this week it became apparent. Betsy was very taken with Hogan and was approved to adopt over a month ago but wasn't quite ready. We believe this was a match made in heaven and Hogan was just waiting for Betsy. Hogan has had a long journey from being found as a stray on the streets to a loving forever home, but Hogan thinks it was worth the wait. Special thanks go out to Kim for fostering Hogan through his vetting process; All About Dog Obedience in Newcastle, for helping Hogan learn social skills and obedience - especially Tayller, who formed a special bond with Hogan during his stay; and Volunteer Bill Cody, who facilitated this adoption. And thank you, Betsy and Patrick, for opening your hearts and home to Hogan so he can have the life he deserves!

ADOPT ME! Callie is a stunning 1 year old female that is on the smaller side. She is eager to become your best buddy. Callie loves all people and is anxious to meet every last one. She is very affectionate and will lean in to cuddle with every ounce of her being. She is housebroken, crate trained and rides well in the car. Callie is a high energy young dog that loves squeaky toys, loves to play fetch (or keep away) and would do well in an active home with kids or another dog for her to play with. BONUS: Callie is being fostered by a professional dog trainer, so she is learning basic obedience and showing off her social skills with other dogs in daily playgroups, at no additional cost to her adopter. To see more photos of Callie and schedule a meet and greet, please go to https://www.scgsr.org/callie and fill out a questionnaire https://www.scgsr.org/adoption-questionnaire

CONGRATULATIONS GUY! After many long months of waiting, his patience has finally paid off. Guy went to a loving retired couple in Chico where he will be the center of attention. Guy loves being with "his people" so this is the perfect home for him. He will get daily walks and they plan on taking him with them when they travel. Thank you to the Wolfe family for opening their hearts and home to this wonderful dog and thank you to volunteer Bill Cody for facilitating this adoption.

Three outstanding shepherds desperately seeking forever homes - now.

Meet Chief, Guy and Hogan

Each of these gorgeous dogs has been in foster care for some time, and each is desperately in need of a permanent home.

They are young enough to adapt and oh, so ready to be adopted.

Chief, Hogan and Guy are in the loving care of foster families, and private meetings are easily scheduled for potential adopters.

For more photos, videos and information about these dogs, visit www.SCGSR.com
