Last week during some high winds, a tree fell on Headquarters. Thankfully, the tree did not come crashing through the roof and nobody was injured. 🙏

However.

There was damage to both the interior and exterior of the house, and the insurance company has given us a window of time to complete repairs to the ceiling and cracked walls, which will involve scraping popcorn ceiling and repainting the entire first floor.

Why does this matter to you? Because we cannot do these repairs with rats in the house. It is not safe for them to breathe the fumes of paint and ceiling material, so in order for us to fix the house, we need to get the remaining 35 rats that are currently staying at Headquarters out. Be it adoptions or fosters, they need a place to go (just long enough for the paint to dry and fumes to settle). We can't comfortably schedule a time for contractors to start working in the space until all the rats are safely somewhere else.

We already had a goal of 50 adoptions by the new year - nothing like the wrath of Mother Nature to ramp up our efforts! We will be working through foster applications over the next week or so. If you have been thinking about fostering or adopting, now is the time! As always, thank you for your support while life throws us endless curveballs!

Join us on the rollercoaster ride that are the results of Walter's CT scan. 🎢

You may remember Walter's story, which we shared on Giving Tuesday. His left eye has been bulging slightly, and his veterinarian recommended having a CT scan to make sure there wasn't a tumor behind the eye pushing it out. Follow along with our emotional state as Dr. Haile at Oasis Veterinary Hospital went through his results as described below.

Walter does NOT have a tumor behind the eye! 🎉🙌🏻😀🥳

But he does have testicular cancer. 😩

But testicular cancer can be cured easily with a quick neuter surgery! 🥳🎊🍾

But he also has an enlarged prostate. 😫

Which might resolve with the neuter! 🎉😄

But it might be metastasis from the testicular cancer which would be incurable 😩😭🥺☹️

Walter goes back for a follow up next week to check the progress of his eye to determine whether or not he will need to have the eye removed. If he does, they will remove it at the same time as his neuter. We are hopeful that he will be able to keep his eye - despite his spicy personality, he has been allowing us to put his eye drops in multiple times a day like a true champion. 💪 And let's not forget that behavior problems are very frequently caused by underlying health issues.

Walter's vet bills have been exorbitant. Your generosity on Giving Tuesday allowed us to cover the cost of his CT scan and eye drops, and we now anticipate several hundred more dollars worth of expenses for surgery.

Are you a bunny lover at heart? Our dear friends at RVA Street Bunny Society need your help. This group does an incredible job of capturing domestic rabbits who have been dumped and abandoned. Richmond has an ENORMOUS dumping problem, and they are bursting at the seams with no adopters or fosters lined up to take them. With no space to bring in more rabbits, they will not be able to save the lives of rabbits dumped outside in freezing temperatures.

Please consider opening your home to foster or adopt a rabbit. RVA SBS can support you with supplies and education on rabbit care! Please share this post far and wide to help find fosters so RVA SBS can continue saving lives!

Goldie Hawn was one of the first 9 rats we pulled from the hoarding case. When I saw her foot, I wasn't sure that we would be able to save it. I anticipated that she would need to have it amputated. At only 11 weeks old, Goldie Hawn was (and still is!) just a baby who had been dealt an awful hand, and we wanted to give her a shot to recover. We knew it would be a long road, and that we may not be able to save the foot, but it was worth trying. In addition to the horrendously abscessed back foot, she also had abscessed digits on two other feet.

Goldie refused to take antibiotics mixed with anything: whipped cream, baby food, mashed bananas, PB2Go. But this was a matter of life or death, so every morning and every evening for four weeks, Goldie dutifully allowed me to wrap her like a little ratty burrito and syringe medication directly into her mouth. We initially saw improvement right away, but eventually she regressed and the foot began to look worse. We switched her antibiotics, and Dr. Ernesto expressed the pus from the wound, which allowed it to breathe while she continued her oral medication and miconahex mousse treatments.

We are THRILLED at Goldie's progress. We can't say that her foot is "normal" due to the missing digits, but her feet are no longer abscessed, and we were able to avoid amputation! 🤟

Goldie was feeling pretty good about her foot progress, just in time to develop ringworm. 😫😭 As such, Goldie and her sisters will be at Headquarters for a while yet as we treat their ringworm. Your donation this Giving Tuesday will help rats like Goldie Hawn access top-notch veterinary care for the bizarre and complex medical issues that arose from the conditions of their previous home. Their ringworm treatment involves oral meds, topical meds, and EXTREMELY FREQUENT cage cleanings. Donations towards meds, as well as items like packing paper to use as bedding that can be rolled up and thrown away multiple times a day will help us stomp out this ringworm ASAP!

Walter may be a bit of a grump, but he quickly wriggled his way into our hearts at Headquarters.

Who are we kidding? Walter isn't grumpy at all - he's actually one of the happiest rats we have ever met, he just has no social skills and communicates by nipping clothes and skin. 😅 We know he doesn't mean it, he's never broken skin after all, he just doesn't understand what it means to be safe and loved, but we are working on it and he is doing much better! 💞 Most of the time, Walter is bruxing and boggling away, happy to be living in a clean environment, not fighting for resources, where he has an abundance of toys and Whimzee chews - thanks to you!

Every day, Walter comes to sit with me on the couch while I eat dinner and work on the computer. Initially, Walter was too afraid to come onto the couch with me, but over the course of several weeks, we developed a routine to move him from his house on my coffee table to the couch using a hammock (aka his magic carpet) and he will spend hours exploring the blankets and boxes I leave for him. His favorite napping spot is on a rolled up medical gown I keep on the far side of the couch, however he has gradually been napping closer and closer to me each day. 🥹🥰

Walter has been 👑 King Itchy 👑 since his arrival. Despite three rounds of mite treatment, he remains itchy and has missing patches of fur. We recently started treatment for a potential skin infection, since the ivermectin and Revolution haven't seemed to help. But Walter's biggest issue is a bulging eye. 🫣 His left eye is ever so slightly cloudy and a smidge bulgy, which has us worried about the underlying cause. He has been on Baytril for a couple weeks now in case it is an abscess behind the eye, but as we have not seen improvement, we are going to have to look to more diagnostics to determine if there is something more nefarious going on, like a tumor. Walter's veterinarian has recommended a CT scan, which will cost $1,200. This does not include the exam fee, any medication changes, or potential surgery if he needs to have the eye removed.

Walter deserves to have a long, happy life after an incredibly difficult early life in the Hoarding House of Horrors. He takes so much joy in making cozy nests, sleeping in hammocks, and whether he wants to admit it or not - spending time with me. We are hoping that with adequate diagnostics, we can solve the mystery of Walter's Bulging Eye to ensure he lives a happy, long life, devoid of any pain his eye may be causing him.

If you saw a female rat, approximately a year old, with an incision in this spot, what would you guess it was from?

If you guessed hernia, you would be correct somehow. Pixel developed a hernia on her left flank and had it expertly repaired by Dr. Lynch at Locke A. Taylor and Associates at Glen Allen. The hoarding case rats continue to throw us curveballs - hernias on their backs, retained fetuses, you name it.

Your gift this will help us continue to provide medical attention for these rats and their weird and complex concerns for the 73 hoarding case rats still in our care.

This we are asking for your support to help us provide veterinary care for the rats who arrived in October from a horrific hoarding case.

Kiwi was among the rats who came from the Hoarding House of Horrors. Kiwi gave birth on her first night at Second Chance Headquarters and went into foster care in North Carolina that weekend. She had a badly abscessed foot, similar to Goldie Hawn's, that was being treated with antibiotics. It started to clear up, but then Kiwi began tugging at her toes and seemed to be uncomfortable, so she went back to the vet. X-rays revealed that three of Kiwi's toes were not even connected to her body at all. She was scheduled for surgery to remove those pesky digits, and when the vet had her under anesthesia, they found a new surprise.

A retained fetus.

Retained fetuses are very uncommon in rats. There is a chance that Kiwi will reabsorb that fetus, but seeing as how it has been there for over 5 weeks, we are preparing for medical intervention, which will require Kiwi to be spayed. Spays are already invasive procedures that can be tricky with rats, as they are sensitive to anesthesia to begin with, but if the fetus does not get reabsorbed, it can lead to sepsis, which would be fatal for Kiwi.

Kiwi is one of 11 rats from this case who have had or will be having surgery in the coming weeks. We have had three hernia repairs, amputations, several neuters, with more on the horizon. Help rats like Kiwi get the care that they need by donating towards the cost of their veterinary expenses!

❤️‍🩹 The heartbreaking story of 74 rats who found safety at Second Chance Heroes ❤️‍🩹

When we were called to assist with a local hoarding case, we initially told the shelter that we were not in a position to take in any of the rats - with 15 lab rats on their way from Wisconsin, and 16 other rats already at Headquarters, we were full.

But when we saw the conditions of the rats pulled from the Hoarding House of Horrors, we couldn't turn them away. The shelter asked us to assist with intake exams, dosing ivermectin, and cataloguing medical concerns. I held each of their fragile bodies as I placed them gently on the scale, and cradled them as I put ivermectin on their shoulders. These rats knew instantly that they were safe. They knew that we were trying to help them. Bugs crawled across their faces as they slept.

Hundreds and hundreds of rats. They were all so ill. Upper respiratory infections, pneumonia, ear infections, eye infections, skin infections, abscesses, missing limbs, microopthalmia, malocclusion. All of them.

Skin and bones, dehydrated, starving.

When I placed them in their cages, they found the food and all went silent except for the sounds of hungry rats finally able to fill their bellies for the first time in far too long. Many of them didn't know how to use a water bottle, and drank ferociously from the clean bowls of water we gave them. I will never forget the sound of these half-starved rats stopping everything to eat. There was no fighting, only satiating their hunger.

I still get emotional thinking about the rats I met that day. How their fear quickly turned to relief when they found food. How they allowed me to handle them with such sweetness, not one of them attempted to put teeth on me - but I would have understood if they had. We may never truly know the degree of the suffering these rats experienced. Many of the details remain under wraps due to the ongoing court case. Despite it all, they remain gentle, curious, loving, and grateful to have the opportunity to live the lives they never could have imagined. Lives where they will be loved, fed, and can learn who they are.

But today, 96 of these rats are alive and thriving with Second Chance, thanks to the incredible team of fosters who stepped up to make sure that we could provide them the care that they needed to survive. Several pregnant females had their babies in safe, clean environments where they have been able to grow into healthy rats who will never know the same kind of suffering as their parents.

Today, on Giving Tuesday, we are raising money to support the rats from this case who are still receiving medical treatment here. To date, we have spent over 💲6️⃣3️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ on the care for these rats, with no immediate end in sight. Throughout the day today we will be sharing with you some of the rats with upcoming medical expenses as well as those who have already received life-saving care.

We know posts from non-profits can get buried on Giving Tuesday as you are inundated with requests for help, but we hope that if you see this post you will check back in with us intermittently to learn about the rats who need you!

There are currently exactly 100 rats in our care! 🫨😲

To put it in perspective, last year between January and December a total of 154 rats came through SCH. For the entire year. So far in 2024 we have had 230 rats, and 100 of them are still with us! 😵

Can we get that number down👇 to 50 in time for the holidays? 🤔 🙏

This Thanksgiving, we’re feeling extra grateful at Second Chance Heroes.

The hoarding rats who came to us from dire circumstances are now thriving. No longer forced to fight for food or water, they’re enjoying clean, safe spaces where they can simply be — bonding, playing, and discovering what it means to truly live and experience love.

But most of all, we’re grateful for you. Your kindness, generosity, and support have made all the difference. Because of you:

❤️ We didn’t run out of food when times were tough.
❤️ We were able to save many more of these rats than we ever thought possible, thanks to fosters stepping up.
❤️ Each one of these resilient little critters found the sanctuary they desperately needed on their journey to forever homes.

Thank you for giving them—and us—hope.

From all of us at SCH, we wish you a Thanksgiving filled with love and boggles. And don’t forget to share those leftovers with the rats in your life! 🐀🍛

With gratitude,
Second Chance Heroes

ADOPTED:

What makes a rat dapper? Take one look at Charizard and then you'll understand! 😍🎩 I mean, just look at that face! Could he be any sweeter? 💖

Charizard is finally ready to find a place to hang up his hat, after a rough start to life in the hoarding house, Charizard has healed physically and emotionally. Charizard was treated for URI and some gnarly abscesses on his tail that have healed beautifully after veterinary intervention. 🩺. And now he is ready to heal you, too.

Charizard is not just a handsome face - he is incredibly friendly! As you can see, he likes to sit beside us on the couch while we work, and he even enjoys Christmas songs! 🎶🎄 One night I was singing Christmas carols while filling bowls, and Charizard shimmied out of his space pod, came up to the bars and bruxed and boggled softly until I stopped singing. 🥹 🥰 With Christmas just around the corner, there is no better time to bring home a Christmas-loving rat like Charizard to join your family!

He is the purest, most wholesome little man, and we sure hope he finds a home for the holidays so he has someone to sing him Christmas songs by the tree. This year, give the greatest gift of all - a loving home to a homeless rat in need. 🏡🎁

Are you ready to give Charizard the gift of a home this holiday season? https://form.jotform.com/223004657598058

Anyone Can Be A Hero

When clinical psychologist sought to connect with her younger female clients suffering from depression and anxiety, she decided to experiment with bringing rats into their appointments. Pebbles, a young female rat, would sit in the room with the clients and allow them to pet her while they shared difficult stories.

However, one day Pebbles was insistent on licking away the tears of a client and would not leave her alone. A knock at the door interrupted the appointment, and the therapist went outside to answer, as it must be critically important to warrant an interruption. A friend of the client informed her psychologist that she intended to commit su***de after her appointment that day. Her psychologist reentered the room and asked if there was anything she needed to tell her. The client explained that she had been planning on committing su***de but had changed her mind. When her therapist asked why, she stated,

“Because the rat loves me.”

At Second Chance Heroes, we know how meaningful the bond between a human and their non-human companion can be. The rats who come through our program are never “just a rat,” but they are an individual with their own needs and personalities and preferences, and they are simply waiting for their forever family to find them.
