Our Story

The Australian Labradoodle was first developed in the 1980’s to serve as assistance and guide dogs for people with allergies. The goal was to produce a dog with the heart of a Labrador Retriever and the intelligence of a Standard Poodle. Two distinguishing features of the Australian Labradoodle over other lab/poodle crosses needs to be emphasized at this point; One, these dogs were purpose bred to be working dogs just like other established working dog breeds, and two, much scientific testing and selection occurred over many generations of these dogs to ensure the correct attributes were captured from each breed. Simply breeding a lab and a standard poodle will not result in dogs free of the lab’s or poodle’s inherited genetic abnormalities nor will it select for the best qualities of each breed. Consequently the less desirable characteristics of each breed could combine to produce a dog quite different from what was intended. Fortunately, the thoughtful, purposeful, controlled breeding that occurred in Australia produced a breed that is consistently loving to people and other animals, intelligent, very trainable, hearty, relatively laid back, playful, happy, no or low shedding, and without the common genetic defects of the parent breeds. In other words, the perfect family or companion dog. Although first developed in Australia, the Australian Labradoodle can now be found all over the world and much of breeding is now taking place in the United States. As with any breed, popularity and economics can influence the quality of the breeding that occurs and undesirable characteristics can start to become prominent in the breed. This is especially true when working with a relatively new breed such as the Australian Labradoodle which is still undergoing genetic refinement. It is our goal at Pine State Australian Labradoodles to preserve the intent and character of the Australian Labradoodle standard while helping to solidify the reproducibility of its wonderful traits. To that goal, we are a small but dedicated breeder of healthy, genetically tested Standard Australian Labradoodles that have been raised and trained in our home with emphasis on health, temperament, size, and overall soundness.
