14. Famous people and pigeons

Pigeons have had some very famous fans ranging from royalty to musicians and actors through to athletes and fashion designers.

One of the most famous royals was the late Queen Elizabeth II, who had lofts and pigeon keepers at her estate in Sandringham, Norfolk.

Pablo Picasso kept fantails and named his daughter Paloma, which means "pigeon" in Spanish. The dove, considered a universal symbol of peace, is an emblem that Pablo Picasso has represented in several of his works, such as Pigeon in flight on a black background (1950) and The Face of Peace (1951). Picasso was influenced by his father José Ruiz Blasco, who was a pigeon fancier and a realist painter.

Charles Darwin was fascinated by the heritage of the pigeon, and through his own extensive collection of different breeds, discovered that all modern species can be traced back to the Wild Rock Dove (Columba livia).

Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson is also an enthusiastic pigeon keeper. After retiring in 2005, Tyson had a massive pigeon coop constructed in his backyard for his 350 pigeons.

Other keen pigeon fanciers include fashion designer Maurizzo Gucci, film producer Walt Disney and the king of rock and roll Elvis Presley, among many others.

Our favourite though is Nikola Tesla. Did you know that this famous inventor (pictured) was a pigeon rescuer and rehabber?!
When living in New York, he spent hours each week feeding pigeons in the park and regularly took home any that were injured or sick, so he could nurse them back to health. He often kept the windows open in the hotel suite in which he lived so pigeons could visit when they wished. He said, "These are my sincere friends"
