Today I witnessed such a sweet moment. My fiancé had just gotten back from some errands. He briefly came inside to greet me and the dogs. After the short reunion, he went back outside to put away some items in our carport. I proceeded to let my dogs outside in the backyard. As Rowan walked onto the back porch, he watched Ezra walk back and forth with the chore. Rowan paused and gave a low, tail wag, before proceeding down the stairs to relieve himself.

Ezra had no treats, was not looking at Rowan or offering anything of use to him. Rowan did not feel the need to interrupt Ezra even though he was excited. Rowan beamed some joy at the sight of seeing his friend. There were no expectations. Just a friend appreciating a friend for existing.

On my own personal path, I have been practicing gratitude and appreciating the small miracles of life as much as the big ones. This helps me slow down and break away from the Rolodex list of things to do in my mind. This one, as small and subtle as it was, felt quite profound.

Warning...this may be a "woo woo" post, but I'm posting it anyway!

There is a practice called "grounding" or "earthing" where you make contact with the earth with your barefeet or body. This allows our body to connect to the Earth's natural electrical charge and there are quite a few studies out there that claim this reduces inflammation in the body, reduces stress, improves blood flow, and ultimately contributes to stabilizing our physiology. Animals are no exception to this process. It is quite an interesting research rabbit hole if you're interested. People who have purchased grounding matts, the indoor equivalent of the outdoor experience, notice their pets gravitating to them and helping with their maladies.

Here I was taking a moment to "ground" with one of my clients, Captain. Sometimes active training is more about slowing down and just being.

Anecdotally, I feel like I have observed this within my own pack. On slow moving days where I anticipate that my dogs will want to get some energy out when we go outside, I often find them immediately lying down. They seem to be basking in their connection to the earth. It is always a good reminder for me. Time to take a break in the workday, take my shoes off and join them.

Nervous dogs can react to some of the most seemingly benign things. I was told that this client's dog had a house that he hated for some unknown reason. When I got to the area he started to react to, I immediately noticed the flashing on the unfinished side of this house. Blaze's reaction to anything he is unsure of is to furiously bark and lunge at it. With a little cycling (walking back and forth making near the stressor making it ultimately boring) and some environmental agility on rocks on the easement, Blaze stopped barking and started to check in after looking at the house.

When your local vegan donuts shoppe says you can bring your dogs in, you take them up on it! I won't name the shoppe as I'm not sure if this is actually up to the health code and I don't want to get anyone in trouble. That being said, what a lovely break on a blustery day and sweet day date with .

This is Joe Jonas. Life has dealt him some pretty rough cards, but he was lucky enough to find a very dedicated family. Born deaf. Hit by a car as a puppy leaving him with shattered hips and serious surgery. Swollen salivary gland early in life causing probable neurological damage. He will most likely need a muzzle for walking his entire life as in moments of overwhelm he has a tendency to bite the leash and potentially his handler. (And when deaf dogs bite, they typically bite hard as they never learned bite inhibition from their littermates as they could not hear them yelp in discomfort.) He is not neurotypical, but he is one of the sweetest dogs and really struck out with his family. I have been enjoying connecting with him during our reactive/anxious dog walks. Through all of his traumas he continues to learn new things.

Trees or weave poles?

Both! I spend a lot of time on my walks looking at ways to use what's available to keep the dog more engaged and the walk more interesting. "Weave poles" of all shapes and sizes help the dog pay attention to your directional movement and stay with you.

This morning started with us hearing cats yelling from inside the home. I assume someone was swiped at by the bits of fur on the ground. True to his shepherding nature, Rowan was upset about confrontation on his home turf. He gave some stern boofs from inside the house and the pushier orange cat looked up and decided it wasn't worth escalating anymore.

This darling 1 1/2 year old chap is Teddy. Teddy's mom was struggling with his reactivity and ultimately guarding behaviors. My what a difference a few structural and environmental changes have made! He and his mom have been absolutely delightful to work with.

Teddy's case is quite a common one I see of a young dog interpreting his freedom as being given the weight of guarding his home and favorite person. It is an easy and well intentioned mistake. We all want our dogs to have as much freedom as possible. The analogy I like to make is having a child take on the role of head of house. The child has not yet learned the life skills needed to make good choices. An anxious dog will react in defensiveness to any possible dangerous situation as he can't distinguish what is safe and what is not.

By proactively offering our dogs guidance on the behaviors we would like to see we set them up for success to be trusted with more freedom as an adult.

Ok so truth be told these photo series are from 2022 and never got posted. Our hair is definitely a bit longer now, but we still like to match and these dogs still have 0 patience for posed pictures.

Happy Howl-i-days, from our pack to yours.

P.S We don't typically invite the dogs on the furniture, one of them was psyched about this and the other kept trying to get off and acting like we were doing something weird. Can you guess which?

Controlled risk taking is not something I've heard much talk about in the dog training world. I sometimes take for granted that I trust my dogs around cliffs, shifty deep snow/ice, and dangerous water currents.
A lot of young and immature dogs have been severely injured or worse in precarious terrain. It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that dogs are more in tune with nature and therefore naturally more adept in wild terrains. Unfortunately, this isn't often the case. Dogs learn from experience and it is our job to help guide those experiences. I have gradually introduced my dogs to dangerous natural features. Thus allowing them to learn on more forgiving terrains while still getting a sense of the dangers of these features.

Out mushroom foraging in the rain with my dogs and yesterday. We had quite the haul! I've come to realize that as Rowan enters his senior years it is a much nicer activity to his joints than the high peaks we used to climb. The mushrooms like the lower elevation as the snow creeps down the mountains.

So...I'm not a fan of these inflatable decorations. They aren't particularly eco-friendly and generally I see them as an eye sore of consumerism compared to good ol' jack-o'-lanterns and handmade yard adornments. But I will admit, something about the Jabba made me rather jolly.

While working on "place" with this nervous boy, his recently adopted feline brother joined in on the chill vibes. I love it when sibling pets can share the calm and support each other.

*Note: I would not recommend having "place" be in a doorway as this can reinforce guarding behaviors since these are points of accessibility within a household. This was an initial session and we worked with what we had at the moment.

This photo looks like nothing.
Here is why it is important!

Frankie is a confident dog with a tendency to want to be his favorite people's personal protector. He is not fearful or anxious about other dogs as much as he takes on the role of guardian. Often his guarding cues are very subtle. He wants to be touching you with his back or rear and facing any potential threats. By allowing him to take those positions and giving him affection while he is in those spots, it reinforces the job of guarding. Today, when we worked on relaxation, I gently asked him to move every time he took on a guarding position. Here he is faced AWAY from the dog/human traffic and giving me some of my own personal space. (Don't worry, there were plenty of pets and play during our session as well.) He is showing he trusts his environment enough to put his back to possible threats and take a moment to let his guard down. Good boy, Frankie!

Just a reminder to literally and figuratively stop and smell the roses with your dogs! Here we are at the taking a moment. So often we go from thing to thing to thing to thing. At least I know I'm guilty of it. More things than my mind and body can fully process. My dogs can only try to guess what we're doing next. Sometimes it is important for both the dogs and I to pause our bodies as an expression of feeling safe/relaxed. Share a moment of calm with your dog today.

Meet Mountain Manners newest pack member! 😂

Ok, it's not a dog...but there's still a bit of a learning curve to body handling and a cooperative experience!

"Scoot Scoot" is the official Mountain Manners vehicle (for dry weather days). In efforts to reduce my carbon footprint and avoid paying high gas prices, I've purchased this electric scooter. It can go up to 30 mph and has a 50 mile range when charged. It has quickly become my favorite way to get around the city and best of all, I don't have to deal with parking.

Complete with the most obnoxious alarm system lock. Seriously...sorry if it goes off while I'm removing it. It's so sensitive.

Talk about a challenging first dog! Echo is a Chow-chow, lab, pitbull super mutt who is fearful-reactive! His sweet owner is taking the time to learn his needs and is committed to his growth. We had our first Reactive/Anxious Dog walk this week and started getting him on the path of fear-free nail trimming. He did soooo well! I'm really excited to see the progress he will make. This guy is so eager for positive leadership so he doesn't feel like he needs to be on guard all the time. When he relaxes, his sweet side really shines through!
