Komondor

The Komondor, also known as the Hungarian Sheepdog, is a large working breed from Hungary that was primarily used as a livestock guardian breed. Primarily recognized for their unique corded coat, giving them the informal name of the “mop dog.” This mop-like appearance served a valuable purpose and would help them blend in with herds of sheep and allow them to jump out and surprise predators. A powerful breed, Komondors stand 25 to 27 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh up to 100 pounds. They possess strong protective instincts, a trait once valued primarily for working purposes but now beloved as part of this unique breed’s temperament.

Doberman Pinscher

The Doberman Pinscher is a large working dog breed first bred in Germany in the late 19th century by Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, a tax collector whose job often put him in harm’s way. To mitigate the risks associated with his profession, Dobermann set out to create a dog breed to protect him as he traveled through dangerous areas. The result was the Dobermann Pinscher, a muscular dog breed with a temperament characterized by loyalty, fearlessness, and devotion.
The Doberman personality is known for their willingness to please their owners, high energy levels, affectionate nature, loyalty, and obedience. Dobermans form strong bonds with their families and can be prone to separation anxiety if they are left alone for extended periods of time. Doberman Pinschers are typically black or brown with rust-colored markings. Their short, smooth coat is easy to groom and doesn’t shed too much. While they may not need much regarding grooming, they need plenty of exercise. Doberman Pinschers are intelligent dogs, but they can be stubborn. Early training is essential, as this protective breed can become territorial and anxious if not socialized early.

Cane Corso

The Cane Corso, also known as the Italian Mastiff, is a large working dog originally bred as guardians of farms and livestock. These powerful dogs possess a loyal and protective nature. However, their imposing stature and past association with dog fighting have unfortunately led to misconceptions about their temperament.
In reality, a Cane Corso dog can form strong bonds with their families. While they may be reserved towards strangers, proper socialization from a young age helps them become well-adjusted members of the family.

The Belgian Sheepdog is sometimes called the Chien de Berger Belge or Belgien Shepherd. With a longhaired black coat, warm eyes, and an athletic build, the Belgian Sheepdog is striking in appearance. Beyond their physical attributes, the Belgian Sheepdog temperament is alert, devoted, and protective. They’re also highly sensitive and affectionate and can make for excellent family companions, although may be prone to separation anxiety. Like the other Belgian Shepherd dogs, these pups need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy. A bored Groenendael can quickly exhibit destructive habits, such as chewing, digging, or developing anxious habits. These dogs would do best in an active household that can offer this breed plenty of attention and adventure. They also have a high prey drive and may chase just about anything that moves, whether a biker peddling by or a wayward squirrel. Early socialization and training are essential.

Afghan Hound

Hello, showstopper! The Afghan Hound can’t help but turn heads. Recognized for their unique aesthetic, silky fur, and piercing eyes, these dogs are truly striking. But hey, there’s also brains with that beauty! These dogs are also incredibly intelligent and highly trainable. They are also a very ancient dog breed, with a history dating back thousands of years. Despite their refined appearance and reputation for being one of the most expensive dog breeds in the world, their origins are much more practical. The Bedouin people of Afghanistan bred these dogs to hunt gazelle and other small game in the harsh terrain of the Afghan mountains. Later, Afghan Hounds were also used as war dogs. Of course, these beloved dogs found their way into historical art and literature.

American Eskimo

The American Eskimo Dog, affectionately called the “Eskie,” is a friendly companion breed from — and this might come as a surprise — Germany. A German Spitz breed, these dogs lost popularity following World War II. In a marketing move, they were renamed the American Eskimo Dog, likely due to their similar appearance to the Samoyed, another fluffy white breed originating in Siberia who later made their way to the Arctic regions and Alaska. You can usually spot Eskie dogs by their small size, fluffy white coats, and curly tails. They may sometimes be confused with the Samoyed, who is larger but otherwise very similar in appearance. While the American Eskimo Dog’s coat is usually pure white, they can also have biscuit-colored markings.
