I LOVE this easy visual to help determine if your dog is the ideal weight or overweight.

📣 News Flash: The amount on the dog food bags is a recommendation, not what is right for your particular dog!

🤔 The best way to know how much to feed your dog is to look at them from a birds eye view. 🦅 Or if your dog has lots of fur, then glide your fingers over their rib area.

➡️ If they feel skinny, feed them a bit more that meal.
➡️ If they feel great, keep doing what you're doing.
➡️ If they feel "soft," then feed them a little less that meal.
➡️ If you can't feel any of their ribs, then you need to reduce the amount you feed them a decent amount.

😄 We all want our dogs to live as long as they possibly can, and having your dog at the ideal weight will help ensure that.
A lean body also helps as they age with arthritis, bad hips, getting up from the floor, and more. 👍🏻

🍪 Also, keep in mind how many snacks you are feeding them throughout the day because those calories account for their daily calories, too! 😉

Thank you to the little boy who made me a mom. It was always you and I from the very beginning and it will be that way until my last day. Thank you for teaching me things about myself I didn’t know I needed to learn. Thank you for sharing your lens of seeing the world in new and colorful ways I didn’t know possible. Oh sweet Phendi, you would have turned 18 today. It seems like both just yesterday but also a lifetime ago I last kissed your soft fur. I’m eternally grateful for your nearly 14.5 years of constant love + lessons + for your son Dracarys + grandson Versace. You helped me grow into the trainer I am today + helped rehabilitate so many pet dogs. You loved me for every minute of your life + I’ll remember + love you for the rest of mine. There’s something bittersweet about reaching the decade birthday milestone-knowing that getting that far is a gift not given to everyone. But there’s something about reaching the eleventh year that’s even more sobering—it’s when the reality washes over you that the number of days that lay before you are definitely shorter than the number of days behind you.

Observing and adoring every little speckle of gray hair that tells a tale of adventure, represents a piece of wisdom, holds each of our tears and our belly laughs that brought us to happy tears. Wishing the body will slow its aging to stay caught up with a mind that is still sharp and living in their youth. Being thankful for every lesson learned, every adventure had, every one of life’s milestones with their steadfast companionship, being our source of grounding when the rest of the world or our emotions are in disarray. Wishing to embrace and master their seemingly effortless ability to be present in each moment and be really, truly living everyday. Hoping the future holds many more sunsets for us and being endlessly thankful for every single one.

A worthwhile relationship of play is one of the foundational requirements of engagement and utilizing reward resources in training. It is the foundation that defines our dogs’ energy in their work, their general attentiveness to us and most certainly their engagement amidst distractions. Play is used to nurture sustained focus during arousal periods for purposes of competition or just day to day pet challenges and arguably more importantly as a tool in overcoming fears and other behavioral obstacles.

Each dog comes into our life for a season—some of those seasons are long, some are painfully short. They selflessly carry the weight of our life’s highs and sunny chapters, and they carry the weight of our anxiety, broken hearts, obstacles and the things that just didn’t go as we expected. They are the kissers of salty tears and the curators of smiles and deep belly laughs. They are the embodiment of unwavering love without conditions. To have such a dog is a gift and if we are lucky enough, we may be granted more than one in our lifetime. I am so thankful for my son to have already known such love and devotion of the most incredible dogs. The companionship of a truly great dog is unmatched by any other.

Every day is an opportunity to remember the things we are thankful for but today I am extra thankful for my amazing dogs, family, health, friends, work, clients and another day to grow as a person. Thank you all for being a part of my life & journey and a very Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours. I hope today that your heart is full and your mind peaceful. 🧡

We are looking for more participants for our canine fluconazole dosage study! The goal of this project is to determine the best dosing regimen for dogs of different sizes to have the best therapeutic benefit and minimize adverse effects. We especially need some smaller pups (less than 22 lbs) to be a part of this project. We also need 8-10 dogs who can participate in the all day arm of the study that determines how the drug levels rise and fall depending on dog’s weight after administering a dose of the medicine. If your dog has been diagnosed with Valley fever and has been taking fluconazole for at least 30 days, please consider enrolling them in this clinical study! This is Darth! This handsome fella is available for adoption through He is a 7yo neutered male lab. He is an absolute sweetheart but will need structure or he’d gladly be a bulldozer. Great food motivation, loves toys. Pushy with other dogs but social—would do best with other dogs that are not overly assertive. Loves people. Environmentally solid. Someone I know needs to adopt this guy!! 🥹🥰

Today I spent two hours in a tire shop, waiting for my jeep to get new tires, alignment and an oil change. I had Branch, my young english shepherd, with me. As I sat in the lobby, reading through facebook posts, answering a handful of questions, and chatting with folks online Branch lay at my feet, doing nothing. He was relaxed, and patient. He spent the entire time just relaxed in his doing of nothing. And it occurs to me that too often we push activity as a form of management for dogs (especially certain types of dogs prone to high energy - like an english shepherd) and too little we stress the importance of teaching a dog to do nothing. I think sometimes we take the needs of high energy dogs too literally, and the focus is so much on their exercise or active training that we forget these dogs need time to relax and rest too. And many dogs who struggle with anxiety also struggle with being unable to relax. Teach the value of hanging out just relaxing in place for a period of time to your dog. It's useful for you, and beneficial for them to know how to just switch it off, power down for a bit and do nothing.

Handsome Diggs went home to his papa today! He has a big role to fill as he continues his journey to be a service dog! He is a rescue malinois that has a lovely balanced, social temperament. Big things to come from this team! Proud of him!
