The Story Of Silas ❤️🩹🐶🐾
Will you help us continue Silas’s journey?
On June 9th, Silas was found laying on the side of the road with a broken leg, in the pouring rain by the Effingham County Sheriff's Humane Enforcement & Effingham County Animal Shelter. He was scared and timid but clearly needed help. He is covered in healing wounds that give the story that he was hit by a car. He was brought to the shelter where they then reached out to us for help. We posted his photo and found a new foster willing to bring him in....just in time, he was set to be euthanized as he was in pain and suffering.
We loaded him up and brought him to our vet where they took X-rays and found an older - about a month old, broken leg. The bone was out of the skin and was trying to calcify (thats how he was able to get up and walk) but the damage was unrepairable and needing an amputation. He is just a puppy, 10-12 months old and we thought that he was perhaps a yard dog since he was so shy and timid but we soon learned otherwise. Silas went in for his amputation and neuter. He was picked up and brought to his foster family. Very scared but not showing any aggression. He knew nothing of a leash and allowed us to carry him.
Was he a loved pup that was startled by the Memorial Day fireworks? The timing of the injury would make sense and we saw his fear of fireworks during the Juneteenth celebration fireworks.
Silas was covered in fleas and wounds and was emaciated, likely not eating much as he laid, dragging himself after the accident. He is now eating like a champ, playing with toys and chewing on bones. He is learning to walk by himself, getting up and used to the 3 legs. He is fighting! He is not fond of a leash and in the beginning would push along the wall to get away from the leash but now will walk on one, hesitantly but learning. He is house trained and if we miss his whine at the door, he will only go on a piddle pad. Someone must have trained him on this. He gave his first slobbery kiss to his foster mom the other day and the smiles are coming out! He is really an amazing dog. He went in the other day to get his stitches out as he is 10 days post surgery. As all went well with his surgery and stitches, he was finally able to meet the 2 small dogs of the home, his foster siblings. He has been patiently and anxiously sitting at the gate to meet his new friends!
This is just the beginning of Silas’s story. When he’s ready, we will find him a very special home! He will continue to recover and heal from his injuries. His heart is already welcoming love from his foster family after going through so much.
We want to thank the Effingham County Humane Division & Effingham County Animal Shelter for taking him in allowing us the opportunity to give Silas his second chance, to thank his new foster family for providing him a safe space to recover and grow into his new normal on 3 legs.
Silas’s story is one of survival, strength, and second chances. From being found broken and alone on the side of the road to learning how to love again in a safe foster home, Silas has already overcome so much in his short life.
