A new study found that even a stranger’s stress odor can affect a dog’s emotional state.

Dogs that were exposed to scents of the sweat and breath of humans who had been under stress were more likely to behave in a pessimistic way than dogs presented with scents from relaxed people, even if they didn't know them, according to a study in Scientific Reports. The study's findings suggest that there is a smell common to humans' stress and that dogs don't have to have a relationship with someone to relate to their emotions.

don't give your dog a bone

With barbecue season comes the risks of choking and toxicity for pets. Cooked animal bones can splinter when chewed by the pet, posing a choking hazard for these animal companions. These bones can also puncture the intestines or become lodged in them and can also cause to gastrointestinal issues.
Meanwhile, raw bones carry their own risks due to possible bacterial contamination, such as salmonella. Moreover, spices used on barbecued meats can also upset a pet's stomach and potentially cause conditions like pancreatitis.

According to the release, Trupanion data revealed that the largest insurance claim for choking on a bone was $3,800 in 2020, involving a West Highland White Terrier who swallowed a bone. In a separate incident, the highest claim for toxicity related to bone ingestion was $3,057 in 2019. This occurred when a small mixed-breed puppy ingested both chocolate and bone simultaneously.

Dogs Can Smell Your Stress and Make Choices Based on It

Recent research published in Scientific Reports suggests that dogs can tell whether people are stressed or relaxed based on their scent, and the animals may be able to modify their behavior accordingly. British researchers noted that dogs apparently can interpret odors even when they don't know the person well.

Dogs might have evolved to read your emotions

As they have co-evolved with humans, dogs may have developed an innate ability to understand and mirror human emotions, according to a study in Animal Behavior. Pet dogs exhibited signs of stress when they heard the sound of a person crying and were generally unconcerned by the sound of humming.

Brush but don't shave thick-furred pets

Pets struggle to cool off in the heat even more than people do, and heat can be especially hard on elderly, flat-faced or overweight pets, says AVMA President Dr. Sandra Faeh. It may be tempting to shave dogs with thick fur, but it doesn't help keep them cool and does put them at risk for sunburn, and keeping furry pets brushed is a better idea, Dr. Faeh says. Give pets shade and plenty of cool, fresh water, and be on the lookout for excessive panting or drooling in dogs or open-mouth breathing in cats,

Should You Feed Your Dog Vegetables?

Dogs' daily diets should be nutritionally complete and balanced, which most commercial dog foods are, says Richard Hill, a professor of veterinary nutrition at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine. Vegetables can be healthful, satisfying treats in addition to a balanced diet, but they shouldn't comprise more than 5% to 10% of a dog's daily caloric intake, and certain vegetables are off-limits, including onions, avocados, wild mushrooms and asparagus.

Panting, drooling, discolored gums are signs that a dog is too hot

Extreme heat gripping wide swaths of the US is dangerous for dogs, which don't have sweat glands and release body heat through their paws and by panting, says veterinarian Joe Snock. Signs that a dog is headed for heat illness include excessive panting and drooling and dry, dark red or purple gums, say Dr. Snock and veterinarian Elizabeth Hussey. Icing a pet's paws isn't recommended, but placing a cool cloth on their paws can help, and a dog whose body temperature is above 102 degrees Fahrenheit should be seen by a veterinarian.

Your Pet Healthy Weight

Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight can reduce your pet’s risk of disease and injury and gives them the best chance of a long, healthy, quality life. Your veterinarian can help you determine whether your pet’s weight is healthy and can work with you to develop a weight management plan based on your pet’s individual needs. In addition, the AVMA has developed resources to help pet owners maintain a healthy weight in their pets.

Preventing heartworms is much easier than treating disease

Heartworms are mosquito-borne parasites that infect the heart and pulmonary arteries of dogs and cats, and by the time an animal shows signs of heartworm disease, such as coughing, lethargy or breathing problems, it may be too late to save the animal's life. Treating heartworm disease is expensive, difficult and risky, while prevention is relatively inexpensive, easy and safe, and many heartworm preventives also prevent intestinal parasite infections.

CDC: Keep pets away from wild birds

Highly pathogenic avian influenza was found in three dead cats in an investigation at dairy farms that also found cows and a person infected with H5N1. Wild and domesticated mammals have contracted avian influenza infections in the past, and health experts believe most cases stem from direct contact with infected birds, and the CDC says that although risks are low, pets should be prevented from having contact with wild birds.

National Dog Bite Prevention Week
Any dog can bite: big or small, male or female, young or old. Even the cuddliest, fuzziest, sweetest pet can bite if provoked. Remember, it is not a dog's breed that determines whether it will bite, but rather the dog's individual history and behavior.

From nips to full-blown attacks, dog bites are a serious problem. Hundreds of thousands of people in the United States seek medical attention for dog bites each year. The number of recorded dog bite injuries is significantly higher in children than adults. The elderly and home service providers such as mail carriers and meter readers are also high on the list of frequent dog bite victims.

Parasitic Pet Diseases Will Spread Further in 2024

"What was true before may not be true today when it comes to the local threat of parasites to our pets and families," said Heather Walden, MS, PhD, president of CAPC Board and associate professor at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. "Over the past 12 years, we have seen the movement of parasitic diseases and the vectors that carry them expand to new areas, signaling the need for pet owners to test their pets every year and protect them year-round."

PROTECTING PUPPIES FROM PARVOVIRUS

Parvovirus is highly contagious, often fatal and poses a severe risk to puppies that have not been fully vaccinated, and puppies should be kept away from other dogs until after they have received a parvovirus vaccine booster, says veterinarian Kathleen Aicher, an assistant professor at Texas A&M's School of Veterinary Medicine. All dog and puppy owners should be aware of the signs of parvovirus, which include severe diarrhea, vomiting and loss of appetite, and should alert the veterinary clinic before bringing in a sick puppy to avoid spreading the virus, Dr. Aicher says.

When dogs and cats nap, do they dream?

Cats and dogs experience REM sleep, which is when humans dream, says Harvard University dream researcher Deirdre Barrett, who suggests that the dreams of these pets might reflect their daily lives, a concept supported by considerable evidence in humans. "It's a very safe assumption that cats dream about stalking and pouncing on prey," says Barrett, and neuroscience experiments from the 1970s back up the idea.
