Trailmark Equine Clinic is a collaboration between Dr. Per Spangfors of Halmstad, Sweden and Dr. Devon Livingston of Pilot Point, Texas. With a shared passion for the performance horse and excellence in medicine, they began working together in January 2017. Trailmark grew from a combined vision to trail blaze a more modern approach to equine lameness. At Trailmark, each exam begins on a treadmill
with a comprehensive gait evaluation followed by state of the art ultrasound diagnostics. We believe the key to treatment success lies in accurate diagnoses and are committed to thoroughly working up each case in order to deliver targeted treatments. Call or visit today for more information on how we can help keep your athletic partner at peak performance.

Trailmark recently welcomed back innovator and mentor, Dr. Per Spångfors, for another week of development and collaboration.
Dr. Spangfors and Dr. Devon Livingston were able to focus on several areas of interest, including:
🔹axial dysfunction and treatment
🔹 compressive carpal canal disease
🔹advanced doppler applications
🔹biomechanics of motion compensation patterns
🔹optimal nutritional parameters for performance
Dr. Spangfors pioneered the utilization of the treadmill to standardize equine gait evaluation and began optimizing techniques for musculoskeletal ultrasonography in equine sports medicine practice as early as 1994.
Dr. Spangfors has charted gait deviation patterns in over 50,000 horses and trained equine veterinarians across Sweden, Italy, United Arab Emirates and the United States, including Dr. Devon Livingston.
Dr Spangfors continues to be an important consultant at Trailmark Equine Clinic.
Marked slab pattern demineralization and stress fracturing in the front knee (third carpal bone) of a 3 year reining futurity prospect.
Mare was sound on presentation but struggling to stop compared to previous effort and form.
Before (right) and after (left) 4 days treatment in house with nearly normalized mineralization (bone density).
Front knee problems are common in all disciplines and stress fractures are a major cause of poor performance in the absence of gradeable or noticeable lamenesss.
Thank you Colin Fitzpatrick Performance Horses

Aberrant blood vessels (red arrows) in a middle patellar ligament of a stifle compared to normal signal surrounding an incidental finding on routine ultrasound screen.
MFI is a type of doppler study that highlights abnormal vessel patterns that accompany inflammation and injury.
Very common presentation of front knee pain in reiners. The video illustrates a painful right forelimb, which the horse protects by changing leads before going to the ground.
Horses may also become rough or proppy on the forehand, lean away from the pain, or quit stopping all together.
Radiographs illustrate bilateral hairline fractures in the front knees of a reiner exhibiting the above behavior that failed to resolve after joint injections alone.
Both horses recovered fully with appropriate treatment.
Before (top) and after (bottom) treatment with smart RLT laser of severe carpal (front knee) tendon sheath fibrosis after major bleed.
Thank you to the Tex Cauthen group for organizing a great seminar last week! For anyone interested, presentations will be available to view at the link below.

Intra-articular debris of an elbow joint in a reining horse during routine screen.
Elbow health is especially important in the reiner, cow horse and barrel horse, since repetitive schooling in the turn around, roll backs and around barrels can place excessive stress on this joint and supporting structures.
Elbows should be routinely screened because elbow problems do not cause appreciable lameness until severe damage or dysfunction is already present.
We are very excited and honored to be a part of this year’s Tex Cauthen Research Seminar in Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Devon will be introducing dynamic evaluation of the equine hindlimb on a treadmill.
We look forward to sharing our unique perspective on soundness evaluations and networking with a talented group of vets and farriers.
Presentations will be available on Gluk University website after the meeting.
Happy new year to all of our clients, friends and trainers!
2021 brought many exciting changes, most notably growing our in house rehabilitation services. Check out our website for more information on our Piezowave 2 shockwave, RLT regenerative laser and Horse Gym cold salt water spa and WALK treadmill at www.trailmarkvet.com.
Additionally into 2022, we will continue to limit the scope of our practice to in house equine lameness and sports medicine only. This allows us to provide care for the most patients at the highest level that our clients have come to expect. For other recommendations including ambulatory and emergency services, give us a call!
We look forward to continuing partnering with our owners and trainers as part of their soundness team into the new year. Happy 2022 🎉
