After the traumatic (for us) haltering for the farrier situation last week, we knew we needed the Donkey Whisperer and her magic ways ASAP!! came out and re-convinced W***y that halters aren't going to eat him. He gave her a few tiny examples of what we'd experienced, but she quickly gained his trust and got him easily accepting the halter again. We spent time trying to figure out what happened to send him back to his feral ways, and walking up with his eye meds seemed to be the biggest trigger. He removes any fly mask within reach so he and Wonky both have summer sores starting near their eyes. We'd been using an antibiotic/fly-repellent cream, which works wonders... when we can get it on. Although Wonky Donkey doesn't mind it, W***y is, apparently, sensitive to either the smell or feel. We're trying Silver Honey in hopes that will work better for him. His vision also seems to be getting worse with the summer sun, which doesn't help. While Wonky is brash and in your face, W***y is reserved and almost shy until he gets familiar with you. We can't thank enough for all the help with W***y since he arrived. He went from a shutdown, scared donkey to slightly less obnoxious than Wonky, lol! She's helped not only W***y, but she's helped us learn how to help him as well. Tips and tricks other people have suggested over the years might work with donkeys like Wonky, but they had the opposite result for W***y. He is a prime example of slow and steady wins the race. In a society that wants immediate results, it's easy to forget that fast usually isn't best.
