Sometimes when training it is difficult to find patience and yet it is probably the most important ingredient to faster success. Break it down to small steps that lead to the goal. Clarity of intent (the small step)+ release of pressure in a timely manner gets us their faster than pushing and insisting!

Before you start know exactly what you want then break it down into the smallest steps, reward each step as you advance to your goal.
Step number 1. Calm relaxed horse.

Calm Assertiveness
In horse training (and many other endeavors) we want to have and maintain calm assertiveness. In order to achieve this goal we must first have clarity of intent. Yes we must know without any doubt exactly what we want the horse to do. When the horse doesn’t do what we want, instead of reacting with anger or frustration which often results in the application of some form of undesirable punishment and thus causing our horse’s fear reaction and taking us further away from our goal, we simply remain mindful of our intent and with calm assertiveness continue to ask with appropriate forms of pressure until we get at least an approximation of the behavior that we are looking for and we release the pressure and add some form of positive reward.

We were in Athens yesterday and Avery had to go to the bathroom really, really bad. She & I ran into the closest place which was a Subway in downtown Athens. We ran straight to the bathroom and the employee got my attention and told me the bathroom was only for paying customers. I didn’t have my wallet with me 🤦🏻‍♀️and I told him I was sorry, I didn’t have my wallet and we would leave. Without hesitation these 2 young men spoke up and said they would buy a cookie for Avery so she could be a “paying customer” so she could use the restroom. I was so grateful, thanked them profusely and dashed in the restroom with Avery. We came back out and they were still there, so I thanked them again and started talking with them. Turns out they both play on the UGA football team. (Go Dawgs) We had a great conversation and exchanged some laughs, and talked about football. To some it may seem like a small act, but I was so thankful and impressed that these 2 college kids who don’t have kids of their own gave so freely and without hesitation to help us out. The world needs MORE of this! Thank you Latavious & Jaylen!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻Fine young men who asked for nothing in return and a great example. A much needed ray of sunshine. Reminds me of Andy Stanley’s sermon “What does love require of you”? Food for thought.

With this weather it's a good time to think about how things are going with you and your horse. How is your ability to be clear with your horse in a way that he will understand. What would you like to improve on. Lets:

1. Make a list
2. Prioritize
3. Pick the first thing on your list
4. Make a step by step plan t0 accomplish that level of
communication
5. Go to the next item on the list and repeat!!
