1.0 GHI het pied ph lav albino X 0.1 mojave yellowbelly. Let’s talk about why I did such a “simple” pairing! GHI mojave combos were one of the first morph combos that I wanted to produce, and those combos helped me shape my collection. I’m working toward high-contrast gene combinations, and one of my long-term projects is making stunning black-and-gold snakes by expanding on the traditional GHI mojave combos and adding other genes to enhance them even more. I’m also very interested in GHI pieds. Is this a high dollar project? No, absolutely not. Is it something brand new? Again, no. But it’s something that made me love breeding in the first place and one of my own personal goals, and something I’m really excited to enhance by selective breeding for contrast & color.A large part of the hobby treats these animals like commodities and products, objects to be collected and traded and sold. In my experience, the more money-focused you are, the less you actually get out of keeping these amazing animals. I don’t breed based on what’s “marketable” or “hot”- I breed what I love so that first and foremost my passion stays, and I have ample space to keep hatchlings for as long as I need to. This pairing will hopefully get the ball rolling on some GHI mojave het pied combos and this is a project I plan to be working for MANY years to come. This first time mom did a fantastic job. Vegas (the mojave yellowbelly female) was the first girl I ever bought for breeding purposes as a baby, and now the first one who has successfully grown up to produce for me. If you saw the latest Snake Discovery video, you caught a glimpse of Zinnia and me! Zinnia’s story is finally complete and it has a very happy ending. I surrendered Zinnia to Emily and Ed late this summer, after nearly a year of her retaining her eggs and developing an infection. After multiple vet visits, she either needed a spay surgery to completely remove her reproductive tissue or she needed to be humanely euthanized, or the infection would kill her. My vet quoted $2.5k for the surgery and I could not afford it, but SD was kind enough to take her in. I never expected to see her again. Zinnia had her surgery, recovered GREAT, and went into their Adoption Island program. Under normal circumstances an owner who surrendered would not be able to re-adopt an animal - they are surrendered for a reason and Snake Discovery cannot provide free medical care for pet owners. But in this case, a really kind patron of theirs offered to pay her adoption fee so that she could go back to her original owner. This is Zinnia, and she has a long story for education about potential medical issues in breeding. Many of y’all remember that I paired her last season, she locked numerous times, ovulated, and was gravid. Her lay date came and went, then a week, then a month, then two. It has now been 9 months and she still has not laid her eggs. This is one of the very rare instances when a female will abort laying completely.
She has been to a very capable reptile vet numerous times. She was confirmed gravid (two slugs) and her last ultrasound in February showed the eggs still in her reproductive tract, but smaller. She will either reabsorb them over a course of months, or she will pass them at some point (potentially years down the road). She is not egg bound - they never moved down to her cloaca. For 9 months she has been eating, passing waste, and behaving completely normally. However, she did abort laying and for nearly a year she has held these two eggs. I tried soaks, gentle massaging and palpation, and numerous other suggestions. She just does not want to lay them.
All of that said - medical issues can always arise when breeding. I have spent around 1k in medical care to make sure she’s okay, and she has another appointment in July to check her progress via ultrasound. Because of all this, I will never breed her again, and she is looking for a good PET ONLY home in which to live out the rest of her days.
