🛁🐾 Bath time for Lexi! 🐾🛁

Today, we had the pleasure of giving Lexie a nice, refreshing bath and a much needed nail trim! Keeping your pets clean and well-groomed isn’t just about looks; it’s essential for their health and happiness! 🐶🐱 Regular baths help remove dirt, dead skin, and allergens, making your pet feel refreshed and comfortable. Plus, it keeps their coat shiny and reduces the chances of skin issues.

Nail trims are equally important! Long nails can cause discomfort, impact their ability to walk properly, and even lead to painful injuries.

A little grooming goes a long way in ensuring your pet’s overall health, so treat them to some pampering! 💖

Happy Veterans Day! 🇺🇸 Today we would like to make a shout out a special foundation K9s For Warriors!
K9s For Warriors serves our Veterans as honorably as they served their country. Their lifelong program is provided to Warriors at no cost and is designed to deliver maximum benefit with minimum administrative costs. Their mission is to train shelter dogs to become life saving companions for veterans.

Shari Duval founded K9s For Warriors in 2011. Her vision was to train shelter dogs as Service Dogs and pair them with Veterans afflicted with military-connected traumas. When her son, Brett, a civilian K9 police bomb dog handler who served in Iraq, came home with PTSD she realized he was only himself when with his dog. Doctors couldn’t help her son, but she found that a Service Dog could. Shari found a new mission in life: to put all her time and resources into helping restore the life of her son, and the lives of returning combat Veterans through the use of Service Dogs.

For Shari, it wasn’t only about assisting those who had sacrificed for our freedom anymore — it was about fighting to save their lives. She started the organization with her own money and watched it grow into the largest Service Dog program for Veterans in the United States.

Who remembers our "Medical Case of the Week" who goes by the name JJ?
JJ was our sweet golden doodle friend who came in to see us for a broken leg. After he was seen by our lovely Dr. Maher, she took the time to consult with the University of Illinois Small Animal Orthopedics regarding the break. After their discussion they both agreed that JJ needed to undergo surgery to ensure that his leg was to heal properly. The University was then able to take JJ into surgery the very next day and placed a metal plate to ensure his leg heals to its fullest potential. The metal plate will stay in JJ's arm indefinitely unless the plate begins to bother him and then it may need to be removed.

JJ is one tough cookie! All of us at A and E Animal Hospital hope that JJ has a fast and successful recovery!

What is the importance in a yearly HEARTWORM CHECK along with YEAR ROUND PREVENTION you ask? ❤
Well let us give a warm welcome to our new friend Gracie. Gracie is a 3 year old yellow lab who was recently adopted by her wonderful owner Joy. Gracie came in last week to become established with our facility and although Gracie is a spunky and outgoing girl, you never would have been able to guess by looking at her that she was diagnosed with Lyme disease on 10/22/24. Lyme disease is tick born disease that can be life threatening if not treated. We are extremely thankful that the shelter took the time to run a heartworm test on Gracie so Dr. McGuffin could prescribe medication to help Gracie get started on her upward climb to recovery.

Heartworm tests check not only for heartworms but also Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichia, and Lyme which are all tick born diseases. Ticks can attach at any time, from going outside to your back yard while your pet uses the bathroom or by attaching to your clothing, ticks can find a way into our homes without us knowing. Although the colder months are upon us, we always recommend that your pet is on a monthly flea and tick prevention as ticks are still present during this time of the year.

Not all sicknesses are visible by the naked eye but by the time they are visible they could become life threatening.

If you are in need of prevention please reach out to our clinic and we would be more than happy to help you!

(Dia de los Mu***os) or also known as the Day of the Dead is a Mexican celebration where families gather to honor and remember their lost loved ones. Today we would love to show our support for our lovely clients during this celebration. 💜

Although the name of the day is deceiving, this day is a celebration of life, not death. Most like to remember the happy times shared with loved ones, human and pets. 🥰

Staff Spotlight! 🤩
Saving the best for last, is our Practice Owner, Dr. Vahling- the woman who keeps our world (and blood work 😅) spinning! She has one of the biggest hearts possible and you always know she's in the clinic from the sound of her contagious laughter or the rattling of her protein shaker in the morning. She visits her family property in the UP of Michigan often and would be content it if snowed every day. She is our cow-loving, crazy duck lady (15???) and we wouldn't have it any other way!
We appreciate you Dr. Vahling!

Staff Spotlight! 🤩
Christina is our hardworking Office Manager but she is not your run of the mill manager. Although she has to spend some of her time behind a computer, she jumps in to help staff restrain animals or lend a helping hand in any situation. She is our green thumb and foodie in the clinic! You can find her hiking with her HippoPittoPotamus Zeus or snuggled at home reading with her kitty, Sheep.

Staff Spotlight! 🤩
Rachel is the newest Certified Veterinary Technician to join our team. Although she is originally from the area, she recently lived in Colorado and misses the mountains dearly. She proudly identifies as a Disney adult and spends her time reading and loving on her 5 fur babies at home!
