Did you know the way you train, or 'parent' your dog affects their attachment style?? 😮

It has been long recognised that a secure attachment style is the most optimum attachment style for human children, as it allows the child to feel more comfortable exploring and interacting with the world, and in the long term being able to grow into a well adjusted adult. The same parallel has also been found in dogs, and that secure attachment provides the optimum starting place for a well adjusted canine companion!

There is now even research showing that the pet parenting or training styles you use with your dog similarly mirror the parenting styles used for human children, and how they impact whether or not a secure attachment will form. With human children the styles of parenting are separated into several distinct styles including:

🔹Authoritative (responsive to needs, solves problems together, with clear expectations and rules)

🔹Authoritarian (demands obedience rather than working together, punishment based and little care of the child/learners needs or feelings)

🔹Permissive (no real boundaries or structure, indulgent of wants and needs of the child/learner)

And..

🔹 Neglectful/uninvolved (inconsistent boundaries, generally uninvolved and unresponsive to feelings or needs).

It has also been found that the authoritative style of pet parenting (shown through positive training, supportive and nurturing but not permissive) has the best outcome for producing securely attached dogs, and that the dogs were 'highly social, sensitive to social context and were more persistent and successful on the problem solving tasks'. Whereas authoritarian pet parenting (shown through balanced/alpha based training, strong boundaries and punishment based) had a significantly lower chance of producing a dog with a secure attachment. Permissive pet parenting styles (training with little to no boundaries or structure) also were less likely to have a secure attachment style (this research did not cover neglectful parenting styles).

This is further evidence, backed by scientific study, that punishment based training does not produce the most well adjusted canine companions, and that structure and boundaries taught with kindness rather than fear is the way to go! 👍

Yes, your dog needs off leash time. by Sarah Stremming | Sep 29, 2022 | The Cognitive Canine | 0 comments For nearly 15 years I have been recommending that my clients find ways to increase their dogs’ off leash time in nature. During large portions of that time, this was not easily accessible to m...

Team Casey & Yoshi have been putting in tons of effort and today it paid off big time! Yoshi historically has been reactive on leash to other dogs. Today after our second B.A.T. 2.0 session with helpers Grace & Felix he was able to approach Felix calmly and appropriately with minimal guidance from his handler. Yoshi and Felix made fast friends. Watching the dogs play is great reinforcement for this behavior consultant 🥹🥹🥹Shout-out to Grace and Casey for being such excellent dog handlers who gently set boundaries and consistently reinforce desirable behaviors in their young energetic dogs. Seeing people like them who go above and beyond for their dogs really fills my cup. I love my job!

Behavior Modification takes time- whether we are talking going to the gym as something we do 5 times a week and making it a 'habit', or whether we are talking about changing your dogs emotional response to something.
Often your dog has rehearsed this for a while, and is really good at the undesired behavior you wish would 'just go away'.

It is tempting to reach for 'quick fixes' to these behaviors.
I truly understand.

Thats why it's tempting to sign up for plastic surgery, do a crash or fad diet rather than embark on a lifestyle upheaval commitment of diet and exercise!
Not many of us want to do it the hard way- and we want results 'now'!

But a lot of the 'quick fixes', that seem to work at first, are not always what they seem. There are things that affect the dog deeply. And it can often take time, maturity, the 'right' (or wrong) environment or releasing stimuli (and many other factors) that will show us the long term affect of some of these 'quick fixes'.

We have often not just suppressed the behavior (which is why they seem to work so fast- super attractive for us in society today!), but we frequently have fallout to deal with.
And often, it is not good. Often, it is very dangerous.

Sometimes quick fixes are too good to be true.

Just like 'getting fit and leading a healthier life', canine behavior change takes time, effort and commitment to working with your dog.
And both of those things are often achieved with a qualified trainer on a carefully laid out, personalized plan.
Your dogs behavior is as individual as you are!
Sometimes you can achieve what you are wanting with consistent use of short sessions and quickly, just like 8 minute abs! But you need the whole plan to achieve goals- 8 minute abs wont work if you are consuming 5 chocolate sheet cakes a day...

So , just like the grapefruit diet won't lead to longterm health and wellness, using aversive tools probably won't lead to longterm mental or behavioral wellness with your dog.

Choose carefully.

Dogs helping dogs! Luna and Kuiper have previously been reactive to dogs on leash. Toula and Elsie are usually calm walking past other dogs. Today a person walking a big dog was looking at their phone as they unknowingly approached us after they suddenly appeared from around the corner. Their dog looked friendly and interested - they were about ten feet away directly approaching us. And without giving the dogs any instructions or doing any special management we just kept on walking, everyone stayed quiet and calm and kept their leashes loose. If you’ve ever worked with a dog who can be reactive to dogs you know this is a huge victory! If it had been just Kuiper or just Luna, I would’ve probably had to get a little distance by arcing my path slightly away, or give a cue or use food, but today I suspect Toula and Elsie gave them some confidence and that’s why it went so well. It’s often better to walk one dog at a time….except for when it isn’t! 😆there’s no “one size fits all” when it comes to dog behavior! (This clip is from earlier in the walk) Does your dog’s behavior on a walk improve when walking with a canine friend? Or does it increase unwanted behaviors?

Puppy socialization! Felix got to meet some adult dogs, observe a motorcycle and rider, and practice stairs. Felix’s person does a great job introducing him to stuff in a controlled and thoughtful manner so that he remains relaxed and has a pleasant experience. His excellent breeder started this process with him. Proper puppy socialization between 2-16 weeks of age can help set puppies up to better cope with novelty as adults. If something is too scary or exciting for your puppy, try later from further away, for shorter duration, or less intense and pair it with tiny treats.
