Meet Axl 🥹

Axl came to us just a few weeks ago after he and the other male dog in his previous home seemingly weren’t getting along. Despite this, Axl has been a wonderful addition to the animals we’re caring for, showing nothing but friendliness, eagerness to please, and excitement during playtime with our staff!

Since arriving, Axl has struggled with stress when alone in the kennels during his transition to shelter life. At just 2 years old, the confusion and adjustment have caused him to lose some weight. Despite these challenges, Axl remains a sweet boy who is always excited to meet new people—hoping each one will be his new forever family.

In his previous home, neither Axl nor the other male dog was neutered at the time, which may have contributed to the tension. However, Axl got along well with a medium-sized female dog in the home. With this in mind, we are open to placing Axl in a home with other dogs following our standard meet-and-greet process at the shelter! Axl does well with children, and we are happy to cat test him if needed.

We can't believe these two handsome guys are still at the shelter!

Meet the brothers: Oreo (black around ears) and Spencer! They are a 5 year old bonded pair, and we don't think they could be any cuter together. They have been together their whole lives, so there is no separating them now 🥰 Both are happy, relaxed, and loving cats who’ve been learning the ropes at the shelter but are ready to break free and find a family of their own.

Oreo and Spencer originally came to the shelter back in early October and had to battle some sickness before they were finally feeling their best. Since then, they’ve been living freely with other cats and have done wonderfully. They make friends with everyone and love greeting each new visitor, hoping they will be the right one to welcome them into their home 🐈

This boy is ready to GO!

Copper is the sweetest boy, and with all his energy and love, he’s ready to get out of the shelter! This 10 month old wound up here after his previous owner moved. Fortunately, the transition hasn’t dulled his spirit—he’s still the fun and lovable boy we know and adore!

Copper is very friendly with people and loves nothing more than snuggling or having someone to toss toys around with...he loves toys! He also gets along well with other dogs, and we’re happy to cat test or arrange meet and greets with kids.

Someone come scoop up this goofball! He’d make the perfect addition to a family or a loyal sole companion. Copper is an American Bulldog/Labrador mix and weighs just under 60 pounds. Meet Josie 🥰

At 10 years old, the last place Josie thought she’d end up was the shelter. But after her owner passed away, there was no other choice for her at the time. We can only imagine how sad and confused she must feel.

Josie is a very low-key and friendly cat. She spends most of her time in her cage, appearing reserved and often causing her to be overlooked. But once she’s given attention, she is putty in your hands. Josie absolutely loves lounging while being pet and cuddled, and she’ll happily roll onto her back for some extra love!

Riddle is all by himself 😭

All of his brothers and sisters found their homes earlier today, and now he’s crying, trying to accept being all alone. Riddle is just a tiny 5 pound, 2 month old puppy who is desperately begging for a home.

Someone, please come scoop up this sweet boy so he doesn’t have to spend the night alone at the shelter 😣 Riddle is believed to be a Terrier/Pit Bull mix. He’s neutered and up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccines.

Meet our favorite spitfire, Judy! 🥰

The ears say it all but yet she has still been at the shelter for over a year. Judy was a bit timid when she first arrived, but after some time to settle in, she adjusted to our routine and we think she has accepted us as her family...for now! Judy was fostered briefly at the beginning of last year, but unfortunately had to return to the shelter due to health issues with her foster parent. She did amazing in her foster home and was not happy to leave the comfort of a home and a companion!

Judy definitely loves having all the attention on her and she is very protective of her people. She would do best in calmer environments and would love to be included in your daily activities or your shadow at home. She loves playing with toys, earning treats...she does not love to sit for them but she will hop and we think that is just as cute. Judy has also been lucky to tagalong on many car rides with a shelter employee and is a fan of of a good Dunkin Donuts bagel from the drive-thru 😂

Despite all of this personality we can count on one hand the number of visitors Judy has had since she arrived. She's been doing well warming up to new people, and she would just love if someone would give her a chance!

Judy is around 7 years old, a Jack Russell/Terrier Mix, and weighs just under 40 pounds. She does better with larger dogs and older children. She does need a home without cats. Roxy has received so much interest, but no one is willing to put in the work to take her home 😔

By now, we know that some shelter animals need a longer introduction than others. As much as it hurts our hearts to not know or imagine what they endured before coming to us, we use that heartbreak to make sure their second chance at a happy and healthy life is that much better.

Roxy is a sweet and energetic yet timid German Shepherd who came into our care in January of this year. Unfortunately, Roxy was bounced around multiple homes before arriving at the shelter, leaving her shaken by her new surroundings once again.

Roxy’s transition to shelter life took time, but she has gradually fallen in love with our staff and is slowly learning to trust new visitors. Once she opens up, you can see she’s the sweetest girl with the cutest smile. Over the summer, Roxy really started to show her true personality—she loves spending time in the yard, tossing around the biggest ball she can find, picking out toys, and keeping herself entertained for hours 🥰

In a typical situation, Roxy might be seen as a "less adoptable" dog simply because she takes longer to warm up to newcomers. But we always encourage everyone to remember what shelter dogs like her have been through before arriving with us and the stress they endure in a shelter environment. We also have a behaviorist who is willing to work with potential adopters to encourage a more seamless transition for anyone interested in this sweet girl.

Puma Therman is tired of waiting 🥲

With her adorable cone and all, no one is choosing her. Puma first arrived at the shelter in 2022 when she was brought to us as a nursing mom with kittens. It took her about six months to help her kittens grow and find homes before it was finally her turn.

Sadly, two years after finding what was supposed to be her FURever home, Puma was returned due to a moving situation where, once again, a landlord wouldn’t allow her. Since her return, we’ve noticed that Puma is still one of the sweetest cats we know. Unfortunately, she’s struggling with stress in the shelter environment.

We believe that stress has led to excessive licking and scratching, earning her the "prize" of a cute cone to help any wounds heal without interference. She is also on some medication to help the improvement of the wounds and lessen the need to itch or lick - which may be something she can come off of, if it is all fully correlated to the stress of the shelter. But honestly, we think she looks pretty adorable in her cone for now!

We’re hoping the third time’s the charm for Puma Therman. She’s wonderful with people and enjoys living among other cats. You’ll often find her lounging, taking in the sights and sounds of the cat room, but truly, she’s just patiently waiting for a home of her own.

Sandi was taken at 2:30am from John Street in South Trenton this morning while outside going to the bathroom.

A truck was seen passing the property at the time. We are unsure if she was taken as an effort to steal or an act of a Good Samaritan.

We’re not just wrapping up an incredible month – we’re closing out an amazing year with 1,004 ADOPTIONS! 🥳😍❤️‍🩹

2024 has truly been a year to remember for Anita’s Stevens Swan Humane Society. No obstacle could ever stand in the way of our mission: putting the abused, neglected, and abandoned animals in Oneida County at the top of our priority list. Each animal received the love, shelter, and care it deserved before being matched with its perfect FURever home.

Some of the animals you’ve been following for months, or even years – like Franklin, Maggie, Drake, Golem, Twosie, Twix, and so many more – found their homes this month. And countless others found their families throughout the year.

Our dedicated staff and amazing animals are only able to thrive thanks to the unwavering support from our incredible community. Here’s to another year of saving lives 🐾

Pistachio is now our longest resident cat, and she still hasn’t had any interest.

Pistachio was left in a cat carrier outside our front door back in June. Our vet techs found her early one morning when they arrived for work. Who knows how long she had been sitting there, waiting 🥹 She’s been with us ever since, but sadly, she has received little to no interest. Now, she’s begging for a home to call her own to start the New Year.

Pistachio is an independent yet sweet girl, and we’ve gotten to know some of her favorite things. She loves cozy spaces—if you’re looking for her, you’ll usually find her curled up in a warm, fluffy bed. Recently, though, she’s started jumping down to greet visitors as soon as they open the door! While she’s not a fan of being held, she enjoys pets, treats, and snuggles on her own terms. Pistachio has also done well in one of our open cat rooms with other cats and doesn’t seem to mind when we dog-test in her purple room 😊

This loving girl is ready for a home where she can truly feel safe and let her guard down. How can anyone say no to a face as cute as hers?

Being a 13 year old senior at the shelter is hard enough.

But imagine being a 13 year old senior at the shelter who has been posted six times, advertised for a whole week on the radio, and featured twice in the paper—yet still, nobody wants to adopt you. 😣

Harley doesn’t want to start 2025 the same way 2024 went for him. He dreams of finding a loving home where he can spend his remaining years, which we promise will still be filled with plenty of energy, love, and personality.

Coming to the shelter hasn’t been the easiest journey for Harley. After arriving and receiving proper medical care, it was discovered that he has early-stage kidney disease and was placed on a special diet to help prevent kidney failure. He also had a tumor removed from below his eye, and after being neutered, it was determined that one of his testicles was cancerous. His new owner(s) will simply need to monitor his lymph nodes to ensure nothing unusual arises. Despite these challenges and his age, Harley has healed wonderfully and hasn’t slowed down one bit.

Before even meeting Harley, many people come to the same conclusion: He’s older, he has medical concerns, and I don’t want to have my heart broken. But we encourage you to see things from Harley’s perspective: a dog who is suddenly without a home at 13 years old, a dog who craves daily comfort and reassurance through the unknown, and a dog who simply wants unconditional love until the end.

Harley needs a home without other dogs, but we believe he could live with cats if they’re accustomed to dogs and given a proper introduction. We’re also happy to provide a few weeks’ worth of his special food to help his new companion or family adjust.

This will be Elise’s second Christmas at the shelter, and we still can’t understand why 💔 Not only is Elise the cutest girl with her perfect floppy ears and big smile, but she’s also the most wiggly and excitable pup around. She’s been to several events, featured more than a handful of times on social media, radio, and even in the newspaper—and still nothing. She’s a staff favorite for her endless wiggles and silly personality, and we’re hoping someone in our community will finally see her for the amazing dog she is and come scoop her up. Elise weighs just 55 pounds, walks well on a leash, has no food or toy aggression, and has even become our new dog tester. She would thrive as either the only pet or with some furry companions! Maggie ridin’ in style 😎 In between feeding, cleaning, and performing all the big and little tasks that keep the shelter running, we try to have as much fun with our animals as possible! So if that means seeing who will hop in the mini Jeep for a ride (safely), we are happy to give Maggie as many moments of stress-free fun as we can. Maggie is the sweetest girl. She’s been through a lot, and at 8 years old, we determined that she has long-term diabetes. Even though she’s been through a lot, she’s come a long way and is at a healthy weight, taking her insulin like a champ, giving the best hugs and is still waiting for a hopeful foster or a happy FURever home.
