The Utica Zoo actively participates in The Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan and cares for several endangered and critically endangered animals. The Utica Zoo asks that all visitors follow posted COVID-19 guidelines and protocols. The Utica Zoo creates unique experiences and promotes public appreciation of wildlife through education, conservation, and recreation. Located in t

he Roscoe Conkling Park, the Utica Zoo was established in 1914 as part of a recreational complex made possible by the donation of land from Thomas R. The Zoo had grown from its beginnings of three Fallow Deer donated by the New York Zoological Society to its present collection of species of animals from around the world.

Kyra interned at the zoo back home for college and knew immediately that this was what she wanted to do! Kyra also spent almost a year interning at the wildcat sanctuary in Minnesota which made her fall in love with cats (both big and small).

What do you love about your job? 🐾 "Everything! Getting to be outside, and staying active is great, and seeing and bonding with all the animals puts a smile on my face every day."

Here at the Utica Zoo, we have 3 Common Ostrich. 🐣 Boomer (Male), Ruby (Female), & Sapphire (Female).

🌍 Common Ostrich can be found all across the African continent, the South African subspecies that we have at the Utica Zoo (S. c. australis) is predominantly found in Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

🌱🌿 They primarily graze on roots, flowers, and fruits, they have been known to eat insects, lizards, and small tortoises as well.

Utica Zoo Heat Advisory Update 🥵🌶️🔥

The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Heat Advisory for our area starting at noon on Tuesday, June 18th, and running through 8 pm on Thursday, June 20th. At the Utica Zoo, the safety and well-being of our animals is our top priority.

𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒉𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝑺𝒂𝒇𝒆𝒕𝒚 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒕𝒐𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒔 During extreme weather conditions like this heat advisory, we want to assure you that we have comprehensive safety protocols in place to protect the health of the animals in our care. These protocols include providing animals with access to their backup areas when a heat advisory is in effect. While this ensures their well-being, it may result in some of your favorite animals not being visible during your visit. Please be aware of this possibility if you plan to visit the zoo during the heat advisory.

𝑨𝒏𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒍 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑫𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑯𝒆𝒂𝒕 𝑾𝒂𝒗𝒆 With this week's extraordinarily hot forecast, our dedicated animal care staff are implementing various measures to keep our animals safe and cool this season. You may notice enhancements in the exhibits such as water misters, ice treats, kiddie pools, and extra shaded areas. These additions help our animals stay cool and comfortable amidst the heat wave.

𝑨𝒅𝒂𝒑𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑨𝒏𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒍 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒕 Many animals have access to their indoor habitats, allowing them the choice of staying outside or retreating to their cool indoor spaces to beat the heat. While some species like our African and Australian animals are well-adapted to the heat, others, such as our red pandas, may prefer indoor or shaded areas, making them a bit harder to spot during your visit.

She attended Utica University and achieved a bachelor's degree in animal behavior. In school, Kat did behavioral research with freshwater snails and prairie voles!

What do you love about your job? 🐁 "I love watching people of all ages become excited about learning new things about our animals and planet. From little kids in a preschool to nursing home programs, the wonder that fills people’s faces when I show a big lizard or a tiny hedgehog brings so much happiness to my heart."

What are some things you would want people to know about you? 🐶🌬️ "I have a beagle named Appa, and hope to have other Avatar the Last Airbender-themed pet names!"
