Holiday Hazards for Pets: How to Keep Your Dogs and Cats Safe

The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration, and togetherness. However, it can also bring unexpected dangers for our furry friends. From visiting pets to festive treats and decorations, there are a variety of risks to be mindful of when hosting holiday gatherings. Here’s what pet owners need to know to protect their dogs and cats this holiday season.

Guest Dog Conflicts

When guests bring their dogs to your home, the chances of inter-dog conflicts increase. Even the most well-behaved pets can feel stressed in unfamiliar environments with new animals, leading to growling, snapping, or even fights.
Tips for Prevention:
• Introduce Pets Gradually: Keep visiting dogs and your pets on leashes during initial introductions.
• Provide Separate Spaces: Use baby gates or separate rooms to give pets their own area to decompress.
• Monitor Interactions: Supervise playtime closely and watch for signs of stress or aggression, like stiff body language or prolonged staring.

Pancreatitis and Holiday Foods

Rich holiday foods like turkey, gravy, stuffing, and desserts may seem harmless but can cause pancreatitis in pets. This serious condition involves inflammation of the pancreas and can lead to vomiting, abdominal pain, and lethargy.
Tips for Prevention:
• No Table Scraps: Remind guests not to feed your pets any human food.
• Dispose of Trash Securely: Leftovers and bones in trash bags can be tempting for pets, so ensure bins are secure.
• Pet-Safe Treats Only: Offer your furry friends pet-friendly treats to make them feel included.

Gastroenteritis from Unfamiliar Foods

Ingesting fatty, spicy, or sugary foods can cause gastroenteritis in pets, resulting in diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. Pets may also scavenge dropped food or unattended plates during gatherings.
Tips for Prevention:
• Create a Safe Space: Keep your pets in a quiet room with their toys and water during mealtime.
• Educate Guests: Let visitors know which foods are unsafe for pets and encourage them to clean up spills promptly.

Toxic Holiday Plants

Festive plants like poinsettias, holly, and mistletoe can be hazardous to pets. Poinsettias, while not as toxic as once believed, can still cause mild irritation to the mouth and stomach. Holly and mistletoe are more dangerous and can lead to severe gastrointestinal upset or cardiovascular problems.
Tips for Prevention:
• Avoid These Plants: Opt for artificial decorations or pet-safe plants.
• Place Out of Reach: If you have these plants, ensure they are in locations your pets cannot access.

Additional Safety Considerations

• Tinsel and Ornaments: Cats are particularly drawn to shiny objects, but swallowing tinsel or small decorations can cause intestinal blockages.
• Candles and Lights: Curious pets may knock over lit candles or chew on electrical cords, posing fire and electrocution risks.
• Stress and Overstimulation: Large gatherings can overwhelm pets. Be mindful of their body language and provide a quiet escape if needed.

By planning ahead and taking these precautions, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season for both your human and furry family members. After all, their safety is the best gift you can give them!

Got Bots?
Those super sticky yellow eggs that are seemingly impossible to remove from your horse’s legs. These eggs belong to a brown hairy fly that looks like a honeybee. This adult fly does not bite, but it buzzes around your horse's face and legs annoying them and causing irritation. After the eggs are deposited, the horse licks or breathes on them and the moisture allows the eggs to hatch. The larvae grow and develop into large bots that attach to the lining of the horse's stomach.
Although most of the time the larvae in the stomach cause no clinical symptoms, large numbers of larvae can cause internal hemorrhage, ulceration, and blockage.
In the past, treatment was recommended after a hard freeze because adult bot fly activity usually stops when temperatures drops. However, some dewormers given early in the fall, will eliminate the earlier larvae stages so that they never make it to the stomach. Using the proper preparation and dose is important, so contact your veterinarian if you have any questions. For more information click on the link below. don't hesitate to give us a call if you need help choosing a dewormer.

Just a quick reminder not to believe everything you see on TV (Yellowstone Sunday night). 🙄💉🩺🐴
Although banamine is labeled to be given in the muscle, it is preferable to only administer by mouth or in the vein.
Administering it in the muscle puts the horse at risk for developing Clostridial Myositis, which is a very serious illness.
