Between ages 2-4, cats reach full development with their social maturity, set clear boundaries, and may become a bit more assertiveā€”sometimes even stirring up conflict in multi-cat homes. Keep an eye on changing behaviors and help them adjust to avoid conflicts. Make sure there are plenty of resources spaced around the home to accommodate each cat's preferred personal area, engage in a couple of interactive play sessions each day to redirect building tension, and provide an enriched environment so cats don't start picking on each other. Watch for signs of tension between cats so you can work on the relationships before things escalate.

Scooping your catā€™s litter box multiple times a day isnā€™t just about cleanlinessā€”itā€™s a crucial health monitoring tool. Many cat parents miss the opportunity to detect early signs of medical issues simply because they donā€™t maintain a consistent scooping routine.

Changes in your catā€™s elimination habits, waste appearance, or frequency can be early indicators of health concerns. When visiting the veterinarian, one of the first questions asked will be about any changes in litter box behavior. Without regular scooping, you may not notice these important signs, making it harder to provide valuable information that could aid in early diagnosis.

Stay proactiveā€”your catā€™s well-being depends on it!

Love is in the air this Wildlife Wednesday - It is coyote mating season!ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„
The season runs from late Jan to early March. Coyotes become more active during this time so itā€™s especially important to take precautions to avoid conflicts. Remember to remove all attractants/food from your property, remove brush piles and cover up holes under porches, walk dogs on a short leash, and haze any coyotes you see in human areas (wave your arms, blast an air horn, yell, throw tennis balls). Learn more on our website at mspca.org/coyotes.

Tooth resorption is when a catā€™s body starts breaking down and absorbing the hard tissue of their teeth (like enamel and dentin). Over time, this can cause damage to the teeth, often starting at the roots and working its way up.

How common is it?
This condition is common, affecting more than 50-75% of cats over 4 years old

Symptoms to Watch For:
Cats are sneaky about dental pain, but here are some possible signs.
1. Drooling.
2. Trouble eating or avoiding dry food.
3. Pawing at their mouth or face.
4. Red, inflamed gums (especially near the affected tooth).
5. Tooth loss or broken teeth.
6. Bad breathā€”no judgment, but if it smells worse than usual, itā€™s worth checking.

What Causes It?
The exact cause is a mystery (cats love their secrets), but some potential culprits include:
ā€¢ Genetics: Some cats might just be more prone to it.
ā€¢ Diet and oral health: Issues with calcium, plaque, or tartar could contribute.

Treatment Options:
Unfortunately, tooth resorption isnā€™t reversible. But donā€™t panicā€”hereā€™s how your vet can help:
1. Tooth Extraction: If the damage is severe, the affected tooth will need to be removed.
2. Pain Management: Your vet may prescribe medication to keep your kitty comfy during recovery.
3. Regular Dental Care: Prevention is key! Professional cleanings and at-home care (like brushing or dental treats) can help protect your catā€™s teeth.

šŸ’” Pro Tip: Cats need regular dental checkups, especially as they age. A lot of cats with tooth resorption donā€™t show obvious signs of pain, so dental X-rays during routine checkups can catch it early.
