**UPDATE** We booked out! Thank you so much for those of you that reached out yesterday. We are so excited to welcome in new Happy Tails family members! Stay tuned for other opportunities.

Happy Fall! With all the kids back in school and things slowing down a bit, we have a few appointments open today (and possibly a few more this week). We thought, what better way to welcome autumn in than by welcoming in some new friends?? Happy Tails is not currently accepting new clients, but we are making an exception today. If you would like to establish care with us for your pet, give us a call to see if we have any spots left!

September is a busy month! It also happens to be Animal Pain Awareness Month. The International Academy of Veterinary Pain Management does some amazing work towards identifying and treating pain. We can't always tell when our furry friends are hurting, but here is a great infographic from IAVPM outlining some potential signs of pain. https://www.ivapm.org/

After the attacks of 9/11, thousands of rescue workers across the world rushed to ground zero to assist. Among those thousands were over 300 highly trained dogs. Their expertise ranged from search and rescue to police work and comfort therapy. These dogs gave thier all to save and comfort those involved in the 9/11 attacks. Their efforts were documented in "Dog Heroes of September 11th: A Tribute to America's Search and Rescue Dogs". On this Patriot Day, please take a moment to remember and honor those who lost their lives, those who gave their lives, and all the heroes who came to the aid of their nation in tragedy.

Did you know that September is National Pet Insurance Month? With the cost of everything increasing, it's as important to have health insurance for your pet as it is for you! There are many wonderful companies out there so look around and find the one that best suits your needs. Most insurances don’t cover pre-existing conditions so it’s best to get insurance when your pet is still young and healthy. Each policy will be slightly different so make sure you understand it fully.

Today we remember all the amazing pets that have crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. The Rainbow Bridge has become a symbol of healing and hope when grieving the loss of your beloved family member. Here is a wonderful article from DVM360 that reminds us that "Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day is an opportunity to celebrate the lives of cherished pets, honoring their memory with love and gratitude." We would love to see photos of your precious companions that have crossed over the Rainbow Bridge so we can all remember them together today. https://www.dvm360.com/view/honoring-beloved-pets-on-rainbow-bridge-remembrance-day

A great reminder from AVMA!

On , we're sharing a few important reminders on the importance of microchips - such as:

➡ 1 in 3 family pets will get lost
➡ Microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners and microchipped cats are more than 20 times as likely to be returned to their owners

And remember - while microchips greatly increase the chances that pets will be reunited with their families if they are lost or stolen…a microchip only works if its registration information is accurate.

Did you know that Sago Palms are toxic? The entire plant has toxins but the seeds are the most concentrated. They are small and brown with a white center. Signs of a toxic ingestion are vomiting, diarrhea (potentially bloody), drooling, and inappetence. If you think your pet may have ingested some of this plant, signs will usually occur within 15 minutes of ingestion. Please seek immediate veterinary care at your nearest ER to avoid a potentially fatal outcome. Several other types of palms are also toxic so be aware if you have palm trees. Here is a great article from the ASPCA regarding the toxicities of palms. https://www.aspca.org/news/dangers-sago-palm #:~:text=The%20entire%20plant%20is%20toxic,Vomiting

Did you know that puppies and kittens immune systems are immature until 14-20 weeks of age? Until this time, your puppy or kitten could be wide open to infection. They receive their mother's antibodies through colostrum the first few days of life, but after that, they do not take in any more immunities from her and vaccination is critical to preventing disease. Maternal antibodies against different diseases wear off at different times for each animal and it is our job to ensure the babies own immune system is equipped to protect themselves. While maternal immunity is in the kitten or puppy’s system, any vaccines given will not be able to "take" until maternal antibody has sufficiently dropped. We booster vaccines to ensure that puppies and kittens are protected during their window of vulnerability if the maternal antibody wanes early. This is why we vaccinate roughly every 4 weeks during this period, in the hope of gaining some early protection. When a vaccine against a specific disease is started for the first time, even in an adult animal, it is best to give at least two vaccinations. This is to increase the response to the vaccines and give better immunity. (Taken from this amazing VIN article https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951406)

Many of you know that things like chocolate and grapes are toxic to your pets, but there are toxic items that you may not realize are in your home. Xylitol is a common sweetener frequently used in gum and toothpaste and is toxic for your dog. This is why it's super important that you do not use human toothpaste when you brush your dog's teeth. Here is a great article through VIN regarding why Xylitol is toxic and what to do if your pet ingests Xylitol. https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4952819
