Cairina Moschata
Muscovy Ducks also called Barbary Duck are native to the Americas- specifically originally from Mexico. They are a tropical species that roosts high in trees, unlike other domesticated ducks that prefer to stay on the ground. They are the only duck not derived from mallard ducks. Muscovy duck are not actually a duck but genetically something between a duck and goose.
Muscovy ducks are a good meat breed, awesome at hatching eggs and Great Mothers!
Male Muscovy get to be between 10-15lbs and Females 6-8lbs. The dressed muscovy are usually referred to as the Barbary Duck when processed. White Muscovy are most sought after for processing as they have less melanin (dark color skin) than the colored birds. Barbary duck is not fatty and greasy like other ducks and is lean, often referred to as tasting like Veal or Beef.
They are often referred to as the Quackless duck but can actually quack if in distress or duress. Males make a whistle sound and female chips, althoughI would personally call it hissing that the male does.
Female Muscovy prefer to lay in nests built off the ground but will lay on the ground if given no other options. clutches of 12-20 are common with an incubation period of 35 days, longer than other domestic ducks. Females only leave the nest, after becoming broody, once for approximately 20 min a day to eat, drink and preen. Males help to watch over ducklings after they hatch. Hatching can take 24hrs per egg for the ducklings to completely emerge.
