Candidates must be dependable, responsible (with reliable transportation in all weather conditions), and detail-minded (with basic cleaning skills). No prior experience cleaning horse stalls necessary, but must be self-motivated, independent workers. No contact with horses -- that means no opportunity to groom, ride, condition, exercise or train any of the horses. Morning start between 7-9am. Would prefer to hire two people or a couple who prefer to work together. It's approximately a 4-6 hour job for one person and a 2-3 hour job for two people.

I made the decision to let my precious and sweet Sedona go.

For those of you who don't know, I adopted my wild mustang Sedona, as a weanling, from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Nevada in 1992. She's my last remaining connection to the life I lived as a Wrangler in the mountains of northern California, so this is a very difficult loss for me in so many different ways.

Taming, training and caring for Sedona taught me everything I needed to know about patience, trust, sharing and love and I only hope she knows and feels how deeply I love (and have loved) her over the 31 years that I've been blessed to call her mine.

I want to take the time to thank all of you who have shown her so much love and compassion throughout our years here. It's meant the world to me to see so many love her.

My beautiful Sedona... time for you to reunite with your old friends -- Dame,CJ, Justie, Kid, Jesse and Barney.

Forever loved. Forever to be missed. 💚

Snowy morning...

12/25/2022

It's the night before Christmas,
we're in the barn doing chores.
We've brought in all the horses,
and we've closed all the doors.

They're eating their dinners,
tucked in cozy stalls.
From the back of the barn,
we hear Phenomenal's calls.

The horses dream of green meadows,
from their pine-scented beds.
Visions of hay fields,
dance in their heads.

We sweep up the aisleways,
and prepare morning grains.
Thinking barn life's not for everybody,
but it runs through our veins.

This holiday season has been difficult,
my family has been through a lot.
But the horses are our therapy,
reminding us of everything we've got.

We finish the chores,
then head on inside.
To get ready for dinner,
and our own private yuletide.

There's lights on the trees,
the carols are all sung.
I remember a story told,
when I was real young.

How every year at midnight,
at the start of Christmas morn.
The barnyard animals sing,
knowing baby Jesus is born.

Now it's getting late,
I walk through the hallway.
Time to close down the barn,
making sure all is okay.

I slide open the door,
pause for a while.
Then slowly walk down,
that dimly lit aisle.

I hear Biggs slurping water,
Kota breathes a sweet sigh.
Henry stands big and tall,
with his head held up high.

A diesel-like nicker from George,
and a soft snort from Walt.
Ranger lets out a whinney,
while playing with his salt.

Magic's rustling her bedding,
Sedona's eyes shine so bright.
I listen intently,
as I walk through the night.

I think about all the horses and people,
that have been to the farm.
And the friends that we lean on,
to stock hay and bedding in the barn.

Our family, boarders and neighbors,
that we're so lucky to have.
Always changing their schedules,
to share life and a good laugh.

I see Norton's silhouette,
I hear Vegas' little neigh.
While Phoenix and Springer,
munch quietly on their hay.

Walking out of the east aisle,
to another bank of stalls.
The winter air gives me chills,
as the temperature falls.

I stop to check on dear Lenni,
making sure his blanket is neat.
And I chuckle out loud,
when Yates smiles for a treat.

Junior pokes his nose forward,
gently snuffling my face.
I smile at escape-artist Sunny,
double checking his door, just in case.

We could be at parties,
with laughter and mirth.
But where we are right now,
is the best place on Earth.

I can remember the day as if were yesterday. A group of us wranglers headed to Nevada's Bureau of Land Management's Wild Mustang Auction. Penned by age and region found, we spent hours trying to determine what legs went with what bodies and attached to what heads. In the end, I adopted #7348 -- a cute 6-month-old red roan filly mustang with a star, stripe, snip and 4 socks. Inquisitive, independent, a voice like Phyllis Diller and big ears...she was perfect for me. That public auction was held at the Reno Fairgrounds in October of 1992 and now, 30 years later, this horse continues to amaze me every day. Equine Therapist in my EAP Program, Emotional Support Equine to those struggling with life, best teacher to those who are trying to learn and sometimes just a best friend with a shoulder or neck to lay or cry on, Sedona has been all of that and more, to me and so many others. Happy 30th Birthday my wild Mustang. I love you Sedona and have enjoyed every single day of these last 30 years with you.

As an owner of an equine facility in northeastern Wisconsin for going on 28 years, I tend to get caught up in the day-to-day operations (and breakdowns!) of the farm and forget to take a step back to cherish the relationships I've built, take pride in my reputation as a well-run and well-kept facility, celebrate the numerous success stories and marvel at the shear volume of horses that I've had the opportunity to care for over the years.

A lot of my horse and barn work revolves around preparing for, and responding to, weather conditions and finding, assessing and securing quality supplies and services. Neverending challenges, to say the least.

In summer, we battle hot, humid and buggy conditions that make it difficult for the horses and people to work, much less breathe. And in winter, strings of days with sub-zero temperatures and windchills and weekly snow storms are equally brutal on people, the horses and property.

Still....I want to take the time to say that I'm so blessed to have wonderful boarders who put their complete trust in me, amazing horses to love and care for, awesome professional services to count and rely on and outstanding help (many of whom are simply great friends) to depend on, here at the ranch.

Have had a few people ask about Koco Ranch, so here you go...

Koco Ranch is a relaxing and peaceful 30-acre equine boarding facility all under one roof.

There are 20 stalls (16-12'x12' and 4-16'x12') and six spacious paddocks all with south-facing, three-sided shelters, automatic frost-free waterers and 3-rail fencing with hot wire.

Facility amenities include: 60'x120' indoor arena with ridge and wall lights, mirrors, windows, bleachers and viewing room, 50'x50' indoor arena with ridge and wall lights and viewing deck, indoor washstall with hot and cold water year-round and fully-stocked medicine and grooming cabinet, outside wash rack (seasonal), tack room with individual lockers and saddle racks, large heated lounge with bathroom, blanket-drying area, entertainment center, kitchenette and communication center, large dry hay mows and feed room, convenient bulk shavings storage, outdoor 30' round pen, 80'x200' outdoor grass arena, outdoor trail and obstacle course and groomed bridle path around the entire property.

Horses are turned out (weather cooperating), waterers are cleaned and stalls cleaned daily. Bran mash served weekly. Regular vet, farrier and de-worming schedules. Space to store horse trailers.

On-site 24-hour experienced management with late-night barn checks. Lessons and training available as needed and by request. A full year's worth of horse-quality alfalfa x timothy grass hay (from one source) is stocked. Purina Impact, Ultium, Senior Feed and certain supplements are stocked.

Two boarding options available. Full-service is $350 per month. Cooperative boarding* is $250 per month. Scheduled tour is available and there is a waiting list.

*Cooperative boarding involves picking up one AM or PM chore period per horse boarded each week.
