coastalk9gsr.org/donate Coastal K9 German Shepherd Rescue of San Diego is a 501(c)3 non-profit charity dedicated to finding loving homes for abandoned German Shepherds. Your tax-deductible donations go to support these very deserving animals. Coastal is dedicated to providing new beginnings for homeless German Shepherds who have been abandoned, neglected, abused, relinquished

by their owners or just left at local shelters to await an uncertain future. We are committed to finding loving permanent homes for the Orphaned dogs in our care. Coastal is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization. Our mission is to educate the public about German Shepherds, their lifespan, personality, and activity level, along with overall responsible dog ownership. We also raise awareness of the overpopulation of animals through education, training, spaying, and neutering. We work very hard to match each dog with the adoptive families. All prospective adoptive families must complete an online application followed by a telephone interview and then receive a home visit before a German Shepherd is placed in their forever home.

"Coffee, Tea, or Me" isn’t just a choice, it’s a chance. It’s the chance to make a difference in a life. For just one day each month, instead of your coffee or tea, you could be giving a rescued dog like me warmth, love, and hope. Maybe coffee or tea isn’t your thing—maybe it’s a different small indulgence. Your $5 or $10 may not seem like much, but to us, it means everything.

NEW ARRIVAL! 🥰 FRANK is one of our newest rescues who was recently featured on our latest Coastal Minute. He is another dog whose time was running out. We are thankful that we were able to give him a second chance at a great life.

FRANK is 3+ years old and is a big boy. He is also beautiful, as you can see by his pictures. What we do know about him is he loves to play ball, he knows some basic commands and loves receiving pets and attention. FRANK is a strong boy with still a good amount of energy.

Please stay tuned to our feed for more information about FRANK as we learn more about him over the next days and weeks. For more pictures and videos of him, visit his page on our website at, www.coastalk9gsr.org/team/frank

ADOPTION NEWS!🥰👏 Little CRICKET was another recent rescue from her last hours at the shelter. She was very timid when she arrived at the Ranch, not understanding that the place she now was, was a place of safety and loving care that she would receive from all our Coastal K9 crew, much different from the scary loud, and chaotic shelter environment.

We helped her settle in and quickly she started to show us her fun-loving puppy side, romping around the play yard with FALLON and entertaining herself with toys and bones. As it turned out the stars were aligned for CRICKET. We had been working with a former adopter and volunteer who had recently lost their GSD. They were ready to adopt again so we invited them to meet CRICKET. It didn't take long for them to realize that CRICKET checked all the boxes. They fell in love with her and the rest is history.

In the span of a couple days, CRICKET went from knocking on heaven's door to being welcomed into a brand new loving home where she will be able to live her best life. We love happy endings like this!💕

A big congratulations to CRICKET and her new family and THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped make this adoption possible.😀

My Sit with Bambi - A Volunteer Story

Today, I spent some time with one of the sweetest, most gentle souls you could ever meet—Bambi. This beautiful girl barely made it to the rescue, and her journey has been anything but easy. When I sat down beside her, I could feel the weight of what she had been through, and yet, despite it all, she greeted me with quiet trust.

Bambi is incredibly shy, her eyes telling a story of resilience, yet they carry a softness that pulls you in. As I sat there, she stayed close to the ground, clearly still recovering from the exhaustion of her past struggles. But even in her timid nature, there was a warmth—a gentle nudge toward hope.

We didn’t need words. Just being there, sitting in silence, was enough. I could feel her slowly letting go of the fear, taking small breaths of comfort. She didn’t ask for much—just a quiet place and the reassurance that she was safe now. And in those quiet moments, I realized how strong and loving she truly is.

Bambi has endured so much, but she’s still here, waiting for the love and care she deserves. Spending time with her was a reminder of how important it is to show kindness and patience to these incredible animals. Bambi may be shy, but I know she has so much love to give to the right person who will take her home and show her what it means to be truly safe and cherished.

If you’re looking for a special companion, Bambi is waiting. She’s quiet, loving, and so deserving of a second chance. I feel incredibly honored to have shared a moment of peace with her today, and I know that her forever family is out there, ready to help her feel at home. coastalk9gsr.org/team/bambi

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK! SHILOH was part of our recent rescue run where we were able to rescue four dogs from being euthanized. SHILOH was the youngest, at 4.5 months. It's hard to imagine his life was almost cut so short.

We were able to place SHILOH with one of our experienced foster families who will help care for him as he waits for his forever home. As you can see from the pictures, SHILOH is a very cute boy. Here's what his foster mom has to say about him:

"Shiloh is a very sweet and affectionate puppy. He loves his belly or chest rubs and will roll right to his back and lay there until you decide to stop. He is always excited to meet new people and new doggy friends. Currently he is living with a German Shepherd female and a male Chihuahua. He is completely respectful of both ...big and small. He is curious as all puppies are and loves to steal your shoes and then trot down the hallway to take his treasure to his bed. Potty training has been a breeze so far! He loves his crate as well and will seek it out when he is ready to go to bed. If you are looking for a sweet and smart boy then Shiloh is the boy for you!"

FOSTER FOCUS - BRUNO is the perfect adventure companion. He is a handsome, intelligent, loyal, and loving 2-year-old GSD. BRUNO is a country dog at heart. He thrives in wide-open spaces. He is also a true “dog’s dog” – he has never met a dog he doesn’t like and brings that quintessential German Shepherd play energy.

BRUNO is truly in his element when in a home with multiple dogs. He is shy around new people at first, but within a short amount of time, he will likely be lying all over them looking for scratches! BRUNO is a very quick learner. He has mastered sit and down and is excellent at the place command. BRUNO walks calmly on a leash and doesn’t pull. He is not reactive to other dogs at all. When hiking with him, he will never let his pack out of his sight. His recall is also excellent.

BRUNO has lived with one of our volunteers for the last 7 months. His ideal home is one with multiple dogs and wide-open spaces for him to roam. He has great manners and has never chewed anything in the house. BRUNO is very shy around children and tries to get away from them as fast as he can, therefore the ideal home would be one with teenage kids or adults.

To watch BRUNO play with other dogs and/or hike off-leash is to see pure joy – he will be smiling from ear to ear and promptly run over to you and give you a “hug.” Upon returning home BRUNO will promptly fall asleep. He loves to cuddle on the couch but is equally as happy to have some alone time.

BRUNO is a truly exceptional German Shepherd who will thrive in a rural setting where he can fully express his adventurous spirit. He doesn’t care for city living but loves car rides and will be your loyal companion around the house, in the yard, or out in nature. BRUNO will win your heart, become best friends with your other dogs, and be an amazing addition to your human and canine pack. Come meet BRUNO today, you’ll be so glad you did.

ADOPTION NEWS!🥰

RENNER was rescued from Tulare back in June, and he quickly joined the list of "easy to handle" dogs. RENNER is a total gentleman and he seems grateful for any attention he receives from our volunteers. Unassuming, he patiently would sit in his kennel waiting to spend time with his favorite volunteer friends.

We were contacted by former adopters who had adopted several Coastal K9 dogs from us. They had lost their last one recently and were ready finally to welcome a new dog home. We invited them to come meet RENNER and it didn't take them long to fall in love with the handsome guy. RENNER hit the jackpot with this experienced couple. He will have plenty of room to run and play with his beloved ball, but even more so he will now be surrounded by the loving family that he deserves.

A big congratulations to RENNER and his new family and THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped make this adoption possible.😀

ADOPTION NEWS!🥰

Another recent adoption we are happy to share is for HAROLD! HAROLD joined us in late August along with 5 other rescue dogs we were able to save from being euthanized. HAROLD is about 3 years old and another example of hard-to-understand how a wonderful dog like this ended up in the shelter system. But! That is why our rescue exists, so we can help save as many GSDs as we can in order to give them a second chance at life.

HAROLD started his second chance at life at our rescue, and within a couple quick weeks, he was on his way to his new forever home in the capable hands of a former adopter who was looking to rescue again. She came down to meet him and returned home with a new pal!

We never know how long it'll take for our dogs to find their forever home, but we are always celebrating when they do! In the meantime, we are committed to all our rescue dogs and will provide them with the best possible "home" while they patiently wait.

A big congratulations to HAROLD and his new family and THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped make this adoption possible.😀

A HUGE SHOUTOUT to Ashley from Bobby's Pet Grooming in Poway!

On short notice, we were able to rescue 4 dogs from the Riverside shelter. We reached out to her to see if she could help us as each dog was so dirty and covered in yuck from being at the overcrowded shelter. Without skipping a beat Ashley came out to give our dogs a much-needed bath and nail trim! The dogs went from being dirty and on death's door, to the start of a new life with fresh baths.

We are so thankful to 's PetGrooming for donating their time to help our rescue dogs. The dogs ALWAYS feel so much better after a bath and TLC from the crew!

ADOPTION NEWS: Happy Tails for ASPEN!!🥰

We all fell in love with ASPEN when we rescued her this June. She was such a good dog. Very friendly, playful, happy, and a valuable support dog for our dogs that needed a dog-pal to help them. So it was bittersweet when ASPEN's special day came when she found her forever family. Of course, we are thrilled for her, but she will be missed. At the same time, we are so happy for her new family as we know they adopted a gem of a dog!

A young couple were looking for a friendly dog they could take everywhere. ASPEN definitely is one of those dogs, so we made arrangements for them to meet her. It didn't take them long to fall in love with her. We weren't surprised! ASPEN's fun-loving demeanor sure footedness won their hearts. All that was left to do was official adoption papers and then we said our last goodbye to our fun-loving gal.

A big congratulations to ASPEN and her new family and THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped make this adoption possible.😀

ADOPTION NEWS!😀 KONA joined the pack back in June without any training or socialization, but every day he learned one or two important skills with our Kennel Team and volunteers, and he turned out to be a pleasant and very reasonable dog. We were very excited when we found out there was a local family interested in meeting him!

KONA is a friendly boy and loves all dogs but can be shy when meeting new people. We invited the family to come to the Ranch to meet him. It took a good couple of hours, but he warmed up a couple without issues. They loved him! And he thought they were kind of cool too! The next part was to see if KONA would be compatible with their senior GSD. We approached this meeting in phases as their GSD could be reactive at times. Over the course of a few days, our dedicated team introduced the dogs and worked with the family. We also gave them a game plan to integrate KONA into his new family.
We are excited to say that KONA is settling in great with his new family. They followed the gameplan to the “T” and everything started to fall into place. Even his new sister GSD also agreed and welcomed him into their pack. It won’t be long until KONA is fully integrated into his new family.

A big congratulations to KONA and his new family and THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped make this adoption possible.😀

FOSTER FOCUS - JULIA is a stunning 2-year-old female German Shepherd. She has had the benefit of living with one of our volunteer foster families for the last several months and she has made such great progress. Her true personality has shown, and she has proven herself to make a wonderful addition to a family. Unfortunately, JULIA has some scars from her early life prior to rescue which has left her very fearful of men, but, she definitely LOVES female (human) companionship!

JULIA is smart, loyal, and very athletic! JULIA loves to play with her person, go for walks, and swim and is friendly, gentle, and playful with all the dogs she meets. She has a strong prey drive so she loves to play with balls and is very interested in birds and squirrels.

JULIAis housebroken and has learned great manners from her foster family! She has never chewed anything in the house, walks calmly on a leash, and knows basic obedience commands. If you’re active and would love a truly loving and loyal companion who has a great balance of play and chill, Julia is the dog for you. Come meet her today!

A HAPPY ENDING! A couple weeks ago we rescued 5 dogs that were set for euthanasia. One of those dogs was LINCOLN. We were so happy to save this sweet dog, but he was very sick when he arrived at the Ranch. He felt so bad, that he could barely eat. Over the next few weeks, we helped LINCOLN battle a couple respiratory viruses and were able to finally get LINCOLN to eat and put on some much-needed weight.

On Day 1 of his arrival, our friends from Bobby's pet grooming were volunteering their time to groom our new dogs. One of the gals fell in love with LINCOLN and wanted to make him a part of her pack. She waited patiently for LINCOLN to heal and when he was well enough we introduced him to her pack. He fit in perfectly! Our tentative LINCOLN lit up with joy as he spent time with his new pack. It was fantastic to see!

Today, LINCOLN is officially adopted and is no longer a scared and sick dog. He thriving at his new home and is loving being a dog that is loved very much!

A big congratulations to LINCOLN and her new family and THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped make this adoption possible.😀

VIOLET is a beautiful, 3-year-old black German Shepherd female. She walks well on a leash, is learning her basic commands, and is great with most every other dog she's met so far. VIOLET lights up with joy when she sees a ball. Playing ball is one of her favorite things to do and it's a joy to watch how much fun she has chasing the ball and bringing it back for you to throw again.

She is eager to please, loves to play, and shows affection with big hugs. In her short time at the Ranch, she has quickly become a favorite amongst all the staff and volunteers. VIOLET has an outstanding overall demeanor. She can play and turn it off. She is exceptionally smart and learns things quickly. She likes treats, but praise and affection are definitely the way to this girl’s heart.

VIOLET gets along wonderfully with people and most other dogs. Cats? Unfortunately, cats are not recommended for Violet. She would do well in a family or with a single person who is around enough to teach her all about the world and show her how much fun it is to be in a loving home!

Come out and meet VIOLET and be ready for a nice big hug and a walk around the property so she can show off how good of a dog she is. You’ll be glad you did!

Hi, my name is NASH! I’m a big, strong boy, but don’t let that fool you. Imagine a 90lbs teddy bear that loves toys and swimming and scratches, and well, that’s me! I’m 5 years old and have learned so much in the last year at the Rescue, namely how to walk better on a leash and not be an escape artist (that’s puppy stuff after all). I was heartbroken when my last family had to give me up, but after a few weeks of sulking, I decided to give life at the Rescue my all. I’ve made great friends with all the volunteers. My previous family had a bulldog and we got along well. I’m not really into cats. But that’s okay because cats and water don’t mix, and my absolute favorite hobby is swimming. If you live near the ocean or a lake or have a pool, you might be my favorite person ever. If you want an activity buddy, I’m your guy. I’m also happy to snuggle up and chill out, but please do get me my exercise during the day! I can’t wait to meet you.

PERCY is a German Shepherd mix, and he loves to play, swim, and be around people and dogs. He is one of the smartest dogs at the Ranch and learns things very quickly, especially if the training is incorporated into play. He knows basic commands and walks well on a leash. He is housebroken and is very affectionate. When it’s time to turn off play mode, PERCY loves a good snuggle and scratches. Butt scratches, to be exact.

PERCY has made quick friends with the other dogs at the Rescue, his best buddy is KONA, they like to romp in the pool area together. His ideal family or person would be active – running, hiking, leash walks, puzzles, swimming, and fetch are all great ways to bond with Percy. He responds really well to training and learns fast. He really is a great all-around dog who will make an incredible family pet.

PERCY is ready to meet you and go on adventures big and small. Come meet this handsome, intelligent, playful affectionate boy today.

*PERCY will thrive in a home that is committed to providing mental and physical stimulation. He is an extremely intelligent dog and is eager to learn.

09/17/2024

DIOR is by far one of the top 2 best dog-friendly dogs we have at our facility. She plays well with almost every dog at our Ranch. She is one of the very few females we’ve been lucky to have who can play with female dogs. DIOR is our go-to for dogs that arrive and are unsure of their new environment. She shows them the way of the Ranch, and within a day the new dogs turn the corner and gravitate towards her, she becomes their pillar of strength.

To watch DIOR around our playgrounds, alone or with other dogs is a joy. She does so well with so many different dogs, she can be in a play yard with 2 or 3 dogs and all will have an absolute grand time. She does play like a tomboy, and yet the truth about her is she is a very well-mannered dog.

DIOR is a full Shepherd in character, loyal, loving, and always ready to give back to her family. There is nothing more she would love to do than be with people she can call her own Mom and Dad, have a BFF at home that she can play with, and at times probably get into minor naughty things here and there once in a while. She is housebroken, and truly an affectionate girl. She walks very well on a leash, she is incredibly smart and picks up on commands and manners almost instantly.

Like all Shepherds, she is reserved, and not one to come up to strangers. Introduction is always the number one rule with any German shepherd, and that goes for her as well. She will not be the warm and fuzzy shepherd once she meets you, she will stay her distance until she is ready to warm up. It’s a White German Shepherd trait.

Structure is key for DIOR. Mental and physical exercise is the antidote. The best home for DIOR is one where there are other dogs of her generation and size and a home with low foot traffic. DIOR is currently in a foster home, her foster brother is named Duke. When Mom is working, all DIOR wants to do is lay on the floor next to her quietly, she might play with her toys or just take a nap. The words we’ve heard directly are “She is such a perfect dog, why doesn’t anyone want her”?

If you're interested in adopting DIOR, visit us at www.coastalk9gsr.org/team
