coastalk9gsr.org/donate Coastal K9 German Shepherd Rescue of San Diego is a 501(c)3 non-profit charity dedicated to finding loving homes for abandoned German Shepherds. Your tax-deductible donations go to support these very deserving animals. Coastal is dedicated to providing new beginnings for homeless German Shepherds who have been abandoned, neglected, abused, relinquished

by their owners or just left at local shelters to await an uncertain future. We are committed to finding loving permanent homes for the Orphaned dogs in our care. Coastal is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization. Our mission is to educate the public about German Shepherds, their lifespan, personality, and activity level, along with overall responsible dog ownership. We also raise awareness of the overpopulation of animals through education, training, spaying, and neutering. We work very hard to match each dog with the adoptive families. All prospective adoptive families must complete an online application followed by a telephone interview and then receive a home visit before a German Shepherd is placed in their forever home.

KONA - KONA joined the Rescue in June with his sister MAUI. When KONA arrived he was very underweight. We went to work right away to help put weight back on him. Today he looks fantastic! He is a very friendly dog who loves dogs and people. Here's more about him in his words,

"Hi there, my name is Kona and I’m a big teddy bear that loves scratches and hugs. I climb up on benches just so the volunteers at the Ranch can give me hugs. I am still a puppy and have lots of energy but also know how to wait patiently and sit. I don’t bark much and love to play with my ball. I’ve got the first part of fetch down, and am learning how to bring it back. I am secretly waiting to show off the second part of fetch for when I go home with my forever family. I love other big dogs and play really well with them. I also love swimming and playing in the water. I have not met a cat yet but am interested. I get along great with all the people at the Ranch and have been steadily putting on weight since my photos were taken. I’m growing into a very handsome pup if I do say so myself. I’m up for anything active and also, did I mention that I like to cuddle? I’m learning my commands and getting good at walking on a leash. Come meet me today!"

GWEN! We introduced you to GWEN earlier this summer. Over the past several weeks we've gotten to know this beautiful girl. We thought we'd let GWEN tell you about herself.

"Hi future family, my name is Gwen and I am a beautiful, sweet, smart, and playful white GSD. I absolutely love my human friends at the Rescue, as you can see from my pictures. They’ve taught me so much in a short amount of time. I have learned to walk very nicely on a leash, love sniffing around on our walks, and enjoy a good game of fetch or tug. I even like to swim, especially if I have my toy with me. I am good with most big dogs, but I’d really like to meet your other canine family members before going home with you. I have not yet met a cat, but if you have one, my human friends said they can do a “cat test” at the Rescue before I meet yours. I am a mid-energy GSD and love to cuddle, but I can really turn on the energy when it's time to do activities together. I know how to sit and am learning to lay down on command. I’m a quick learner and really want to make my human friends happy. Training and puzzles are great ways to keep me happy. I’m so excited to meet you, I think I will win you over almost immediately with kisses and full-body hugs."

NEW ARRIVAL: We recently introduced REMUS and ROMULUS, two recent additions to the rescue with quite a story.😀

ROMMIE and REMUS were spotted traveling throughout a neighborhood in Vista for a couple weeks. Scared and hungry, these two brothers leaned on each other not knowing what each day would bring.

Lucky for them, a kindhearted lady named rescuediva.org saw them and her rescue instincts kicked in and she began her mission to help these two. With the help of rescuediva and the Carlsbad Shelter, the boys were secured and taken into safety to the Shelter. That’s where Coastal K9 got involved and were able to rescue these two wonderful dogs.

Their story is quite moving. You can read the full story of ROMMIE and REMUS before Coastal K9 got involved by visiting, rescuediva.com.

The boys settled into life at the Ranch nicely. What we didn’t know is that ROMMIE found his new forever family within a couple weeks of arriving at Coastal! It was a perfect match and a beautiful end to a long journey for him.

REMUS is doing well as he awaits his forever home. He is a very friendly boy who is nervous in new situations. Even with that, he has accepted happily the love and care of our Kennel Team and Volunteers. REMUS loves attention and shows you by leaning in for more pets.😀 He will be a wonderful companion and will likely be one of those famous “Velcro dogs” that so many GSD’s are

MABEL was rescued just before her time ran out at the Shelter. She's had a tough life, but we are committed to helping MABEL have a wonderful life here on out. A few words from her.

"Hello there, new friends, my name is Mabel and I was rescued by Coastal K9 just in time before I was to be euthanized. I had a rough start to life. I was a breeding dog and my time at the Rescue has been the first time that I could just be a dog and do dog things. I had no idea how much fun being outside with people and playing could be!

The nice people at the Rescue realized that I had a limp and after some vet visits, they found out I had elbow dysplasia. It was really painful, but I’m tough and just kind of powered through it. Fortunately, once I got to the Rescue my new human friends put me on a great training plan to build up my muscles to help heal my elbow issues. This involved lots of swimming and I absolutely love it! I’ve made such great progress in a short amount of time and can now walk on a leash without issue.

I don’t like cats and would do best in a home where I am the only dog. If you do have a dog, that’s not a dealbreaker, but we should really meet first! I am very affectionate, love scratches, laying on you and your feet, Did I mention swimming? My forever home would definitely have a pool, or access to water so I can keep up my swimming regime, it really has made all the difference for me."

*Mabel is an older dog but is a fast learner, smart, affectionate, and eager to please. Between her swimming and the low dose of medicine she is on, she no longer shows the pain/limp that she arrived with. She truly is a success story and she would make an excellent companion, come meet her today!

TRAPPER is a beautiful 3-year-old Bi-Color GSD who we rescued in 2023.
TRAPPER has a team of “champions” here at the rescue who have helped him come a long way in this last year. We’ve also had the luxury of having him spend time in a foster home for the past several weeks which has given us a great insight into what TRAPPER would be like at home. He’s a very smart and affectionate dog, who is waiting for his forever home and family to come meet him.

ADOPTION NEWS!🥰

As you read this, our funny boy OLIVER today is settling in to his new forever home! We recently rescued OLIVER who was turned into the shelter with another dog. Another story of "hard to understand why this dog was in the shelter." OLIVER is super friendly and fun. He loves to attend and is very affectionate and friendly with other dogs.

OLIVER was invited to meet a very nice family and their GSD. The family was looking to add another pack member to their family and we felt OLIVER was a great option. As it turned out, we were right. The two dogs did amazingly together! And, the humans loved him too! Yay OLIVER!👏👏

A big congratulations to OLVIER and his new family and THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped make this adoption possible.😀

ADOPTION NEWS! 👏

MAUI joined our Rescue last month along with her brother KONA. She was always very affectionate and wanted to make as many friends as possible. We don't think there was one person she didn't want a belly from from. Her friendly demeanor and whimsicalness even came across in her social media post. She caught the eye of a nice gal who was ready to adopt a dog just like her. We invited her to come for a meet and greet with Maui and as you can tell by the pictures, it went great!

The first reports are that MAUI is settling in great to her new home like she's lived there all her life! Yay MAUI!

A big congratulations to MAUI and her new family and THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers and Foster Families who helped make this adoption possible.😀

ADOPTION NEWS!🥰🥰🥰

We are thrilled to share some wonderful adoption news about our little buddy, DENVER! DENVER was rescued in June of 2023. We quickly learned that life prior to rescue had left an imprint on him. He was a little leery of most men and there were some male dogs that he was reactive to. We knew the perfect home for DENVER would need certain elements for him to live his best life.

While at the Ranch DENVER had several Coastal buddy playmates including MINNIE, KINSEY, and DIOR to name a few. DENVER loves his dog buddies and it was clear he needed a home with another dog. DENVER was also a volunteer favorite with many people in his Fan Club. One such volunteer was also the mom of one of DENVER's buddies, MINNIE who had been adopted earlier this year. She also loved him and offered to FOSTER our little guy. After a week or so, she knew that DENVER needed to be a permanent member of her home. He blended perfectly with her and MINNIE and the cats at home, so she made it official!

A big congratulations to DENVER and his new family and THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers and Foster Families who helped make this adoption possible.😀

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK!😀

Hi my name is TYSON and my photos don’t do me justice – I’m very handsome (and humble!) and extremely energetic. If you throw a ball for me, I will chase it and get the zoomies out of sheer joy. I am also very affectionate and like hugs and scratches, during which I will probably lean on you. I know some basic commands and am housebroken. I am good on a leash and am learning to not jump up on people but sometimes life gets so exciting that I forget. Plus, I’ve got so much energy that if I get too cooped up for too long I like to bark. So, the key to my heart is activity, and then more activity!

My ideal home is a very active household – a few leash walks a day won’t cut it with me. I would thrive in a home with people who want to hike with me off-leash, run with me, take me to the dog park, or maybe even do agility training. I’m good with other big dogs and haven’t met a cat yet. If you’re looking for a quintessential German Shepherd, I’m your guy. I’d love to meet you. I’m eager to learn and experience the world with an experienced owner.

ADOPTION NEWS! 🥰🥰👏

Late last year we welcomed little 4-month-old BODIE into our Rescue who had lost his home when his family didn't realize the time and commitment that a young GSD takes. They no longer wanted him. But we did.

We placed BODIE into one of our Foster Homes and he started to settle in. But, we noticed something wasn't quite right. For a puppy, his energy seemed low. After multiple doctor visits, we learned that BODIE was born with a congenital heart condition. We were hopeful that it was something that would be surgical, but were informed, that just isn't done with dogs. With his doctor, we got the medications that he needed to manage his condition.

It takes a special family to be willing to adopt a medical dog, but the stars were aligned and directed such a family our way. This family is long-time GSD owners who had always been drawn to those dogs who needed more than others may be able or willing to give. They saw BODIE and his story and wanted to help. BODIE's family knew that adopting him and taking on his medical expenses would make it possible for is to rescue other dogs in need and wanted BODIE's adoption to make a difference in the lives of others. And that's exacting happened. The meet and greet went great and they gladly welcomed BODIE into their family!

Today Bodie is doing great in his new home. We couldn't be happier for him for such a wonderful adoption and a second chance at a great life. A big congratulations to BODIE and his new family and THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers and Foster Families who helped make this adoption possible.😀

ADOPTION NEWS! 😍👏

QUINCY was down to his last few hours of life when we rescued him. He was found stray and brought to the shelter on Christmas Eve. Sadly, no family claimed him, and while he sat in his kennel run waiting for someone to adopt him, he was passed over or not even considered. Thankfully, Coastal K9 was there to give this young boy a second chance, and he made the most of it!

As QUINCY settled into the Ranch he met several of our volunteers, but one of those volunteers fell in love with him. Each time she came she would spend extra time with QUINCY. Their bond grew and within a few months she was fostering QUINCY and he was living his best life. He was so happy.

This past week, QUINCY's foster mom made it final and she went from foster mom to full-time mom and owner! We couldn't be happier for QUINCY. Once forgotten, but never again!

A big congratulations to QUINCY and his new family and THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers and Foster Families who helped make this adoption possible.😀

NEW KID ON THE BLOCK - OLIVER!

OLIVER is a 2-year-old Black and Tan GSD who is one of our most recent rescues. We are happy to be able to play a part in OLIVER's second chance at life. OLIVER was turned into the shelter with another female dog. He is very affectionate and loves attention. Given OLIVER's demeanor and how friendly he is, it's hard to understand how he ended up in the shelter. He is settling into life at the Ranch and quickly becomes a volunteer and staff favorite. OLIVER has a spunky playful side to him, like most GSD's. He walks well on a leash and likes connecting with his handler. As the days go by, we will continue to learn more about this nice boy. But, we know he will make a great addition to a loving home.

ADOPTION NEWS!

We love all of our rescue dogs. We walk with them side by side as they come to the Ranch to start a new beginning, and along the way as they learn about life at the Ranch, and then throughout the process of finding a new forever home. For some dogs, the process takes longer than others. And that was the story for VINNIE. We would scratch our heads wondering how such a gem of a dog wasn't adopted yet. But then, his perfect family came along!

VINNIE has been a Coastal dog since he was just a puppy. He spent his first year of life in a foster home then came to the Ranch to live with the bigger dogs, and dogs he could socialize and play with. VINNIE is so smart and we all fell in love with him. For the last few months, he was invited to spend a few days each week in a different foster home. VINNIE didn't forget his early lessons as a puppy of how to be a house dog. As a matter of fact, VINNIE thrived and showed us what an awesome dog he is!

We were contacted by a couple who were interested in VINNIE. His floppy ears, which may be why he was looked over in the past, were the exact thing that caught their eye! They were looking for a pal for their dog so we invited them up to meet him. The meeting went fantastic. The dogs got along great and the couple really liked him. Before the day was over, VINNIE was no longer looking for a forever home!🥰

YAY VINNIE!!

A big congratulations to VINNIE and his new family and THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers and Foster Families who helped make this adoption possible.😀

ADOPTION NEWS 🥰

SYNDEY joined our Coastal Pack just recently. A petite, friendly, and young female, she knew a few basic commands and we could tell she was extremely disappointed to find herself abandoned by her previous family. SYDNEY was invited for a couple of meet and greets, but one of the families had cats and her prey drive was too big, and the resident dog from the other family wasn't interested in making friends with her. Despite that, we figured it wouldn't be long before SYNDEY found a home.

Here lucky day came over the weekend when a nice couple was invited to meet a couple of our dogs. We introduced SYNDEY first, and that was it. They didn't want to meet any other dogs! SYDNEY was all smiles when we helped load her up in the car. It was like she knew she was going home!

A big congratulations to SYDNEY and her new family! And, a big THANK YOU to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped make this adoption possible.😀

NEW ARRIVAL - MAUI🌺

Can you say "Sweetheart"? Another word for sweetheart would be MAUI. MAUI and her brother KONA recently our Coastal Pack and we are so happy to play a part in her 2nd chance at life. She is very friendly and affectionate and enjoys both humans and other dogs. We did a preliminary cat test with MAUI and she decided she didn't want anything to do with a cat. So if you have cats, MAUI is a dog who will not be a threat. Like her brother, MAUI is a blank slate. She is learning to walk on a lead and responds well to her handlers. She would make a wonderful addition to most any family.
