➡️ Tips for Preparing Your Mare for Early Breeding with Artificial Lighting

Breeding season can sneak up on you, but with the right preparation, you can ensure your mare is ready to conceive early. One of the most effective strategies is using artificial lighting to trick her body into thinking the longer days of spring have arrived.

Here’s how to get started:

1. Start Early

Timing is key when it comes to using artificial light. Begin the lighting regimen 60-90 days before your desired breeding date. For many breeders, this means starting around December to have the mare cycling by February.

2. 16 Hours of Light

Mares require at least 16 hours of continuous light to simulate springtime conditions. You can extend natural daylight using artificial lighting in her stall or paddock. Use automatic timers to ensure consistent light exposure.

3. Consistent Lighting Schedule

Maintain a consistent schedule, with no more than 8 hours of darkness per day. The sudden introduction of light followed by periods of darkness can confuse the mare’s natural cycle, so make sure lighting is uniform.

4. Light Intensity Matters

The intensity of the artificial lighting should be strong enough to mimic natural daylight. Aim for at least 10-foot candles of light (about the strength of a standard 200-watt bulb in a 12x12 stall).

5. Monitor Health and Nutrition

While the lighting helps regulate her reproductive cycle, it’s essential to ensure your mare is in optimal health. A well-balanced diet, including considering supplementing with Omega Fatty Acids is beneficial as well.

By following these tips, you’ll give your mare the best possible chance of cycling early, setting her up for a successful breeding season.
