Training Tip of the Week!
One way to help your dog get in the tub for bath time is to have him get in it without getting a bath. If he thinks there is a good chance that he isn't going to get wet, he is more likely to hop in without a problem.

It's Fun Fact Friday!
Apple and Pear seeds are toxic. The seeds contain amygdaline, which releases cyanide in the stomach. It would take the seeds from about 200 apples to kill a medium sized dog and even more pear seeds to cause harm as they contain less amygdalin. Now you know!

It's Wild Wednesday! This week we are talking about axolotls! Axolotls are a type of salamander. However, they do not lose their gills, which forces them to stay in the water. Their gills are actually the featherlike appendages around their heads. They do have lungs as well, which is rare in the animal world. They are found in one place on earth, Lake Xochimilco in New Mexico. They are a variety of colors including green, grey, and pink. They are able to regrow body parts, including organs, which makes them a great candidate for scientific research. Scientists are also interested in the huge axolotl genome. It is 10 times larger than a humans. Now you know!

Training Tip of the Week!
If you have trouble controlling your dog when other dogs are around, take your dog to the park to train. Leave plenty of space between you and other park patrons to start. As your dog starts listening better, move closer to others. Eventually, you will have a dog that will listen no matter what!

It's Wild Wednesday! This week we are talking about capybaras. They are the world's largest rodent species. Like hippos, they enjoy spending a lot of their time in the water. They even have webbed feet. They are vegetarians and can weigh up to 150 pounds! Despite that, they can run up to 22mph on land. Capybaras are very vocal. They can make a wide variety of sounds including purring, barking, grunting, and teeth-chattering. All this is due to their highly social nature. They even give rides to other animals such as monkeys, birds, rabbits, and other capybaras. They enjoy symbiotic relationships with several animal species. Overall, capybaras are neat Amazonian creatures! Now you know!

Training Tip of the Week
If you don't like the way your dog is communicating with you, you can change it by asking for a different behavior. For instance, if your dog barks to get you to play, you can tell the dog to give a paw before playing. Over time, the dog will give the paw instead of barking.

It's Fun Fact Friday!
If you keep a goldfish in a dark room, it will turn pale. This is because the pigment in their skin reacts to light. As the skin cells die off and are replaced with new ones, the lack of light will result in pale coloring. Now you know!

It's Wild Wednesday! This week we are talking about ostriches. There are two species of ostrich- the common ostrich and the Somali ostrich. They are the largest and heaviest birds in the world. As such, they lay very large eggs. In fact, one ostrich egg is equivalent to about 24 chicken eggs! They also have the largest eyes of any bird. The eyes are about the size of a billiard ball, which is bigger than its brain. They also only blink about once per minute, much less than our 12-17 times per minute. They have two toes on each foot, one of which has a giant nail. When provoked, they can kill you with a single well placed kick. That is, if you can catch them. They can reach speeds of up to 45mph! Lastly, they do not bury their heads in the sand. They do, however, lay down and stretch out their necks to hide from predators. Now you know!

Training Tip of the Week
If you want your pet to remind you to do something every day, simply feed them or give them a treat at the time you want to be reminded. Before long, your pet will be asking for that food or treat at the same time every day.

Pet Care Tip of the Week!
If you have a cat that seems to enjoy scratching your furniture or woodwork, place a scratching post next to or in front of the area being destroyed. In many cases, the cat will use the scratching post instead of the furniture/woodwork, especially if the post is similar in size and texture as the scratched area.

It's Wild Wednesday! This week we are talking about hedgehogs! Their name comes from the fact that they tend to make pig-like sounds while foraging for food in hedges. there are 17 species of hedgehog, all of which live in Europe, Asia, and Africa. In these areas, they are able to live in a wide variety of climates including forests, deserts, and even urban areas. They are capable of hibernation when needed. If their habitat gets too cold, they will hibernate. Hedgehogs are nocturnal. They live on a diet largely consisting of insects, but can eat small mice, frogs, eggs, and snakes as well. They are able to withstand snake venom, but can be killed if it is very potent. Lastly, a hedgehogs quills are not barbed or venomous. When attacked, the hedgehog will curl into a ball, making the quills stand up so they poke anything that tries to get it. Now you know!

Training Tip of the Week!
When training, pay attention to how you reward your dog. If you always give the reward close to your body, the dog will learn to look to you for the next thing. If, however, you reach out to the dog, the dog is more likely to be distracted. This is because the reward comes to them without any effort or thought on their part whereas rewarding next to our body makes the dog look for and reach for the treat.
