Recent cases of leptospirosis have been reported in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, affecting both dogs and humans.

What is Leptospirosis? Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can lead to serious health issues in both humans and animals, including kidney and liver damage.

How is it Transmitted? The bacteria are typically found in soil and contaminated water, often spread through the urine of infected wild animals like raccoons and rats.

Symptoms to Watch For:
• Fever
• Shivering
• Muscle tenderness
• Lethargy
• Loss of appetite
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
Both humans and animals can exhibit these symptoms.

Preventive Measures:
• For Pet Owners:
•   pets are vaccinated against leptospirosis.
• Limit exposure to potentially contaminated water sources.
• Keep your yard free from wild animal urine by securing trash bins and removing food sources.

• For the Community:
• Avoid contact with floodwaters or stagnant water bodies.
• Wear protective clothing if you must come into contact with potentially contaminated environments.
If you or your pet exhibit any symptoms, seek medical attention promptly. Early treatment is crucial.
Stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect yourself, your pets, and our community.

Call us if you have any questions or concerns. If your pets is not vaccinated for Leptospirosis please call the clinic and set an appointment for the vaccine. If its your pets first time they will need a booster vaccine 3 weeks after the first one.
