Let’s talk color fading genetics in poodles/poodle mixes!

As groomers we often see young poodle/doodle puppies come in that are stunning red. Some after only months, aome longer, begin to drastically lighten. We often find ourselves discussing this with pet parents and dispelling myths as they come to us worried that cutting the hair has caused the color loss.

I reality- genes responsible for red and brown coloring, especially in poodles/doodles, commonly fade out as the dog ages. In some cases, the dog doesn’t fade at all. In others, they fade quite quickly. Some poodles born chocolate will quickly become almost silver and reds can fade to apricot or pale cream. There are no guarantees what you’ll get over time in poodles and poodle crosses with colors that typically are affected by fading genetics. These color changes are also not accelerated by grooming the way they can be in other breeds and coat types that are altered in texture by shaving vs stripping/carding etc.

Our best example to show you for this is shop dog Cider (smaller poodle) next to Jac (larger poodle). Both of these girls are purebred and very close in age and groomes regularly in a variety of lengths and styles, but while Jac has retained her rich color, Cider has lightened considerably over the course of a few years. Swipe to the second photo to see Cider and Jac just barely a year ago. The color difference in Cider in just that year is quite stark!
