Tooth-Tuesday! Check out the before and after photos from one of our dental procedures. Tooth health is important, as it can affect other systems within the body over time. Check out the before and after photos below, showing how the calculus (hardened plaque) was removed using an ultrasonic scaler. Anesthetic dentistry is used because we clean below the gumline as well as the visible portion of the tooth. Afterwards polishing is completed (just like we have done at the dentist) to ensure there are no fine ridges or grooves from the cleaning and calculus removal.
It is important to get routine checkups on your pets, which include a full nose to tail exam!

Did you know that our hospital practices Fear Free techniques? All of our team members are Fear Free Certified. We want to make your pet's visit as least stressful as possible, so that they can easily come for future visits.
We will often use a "treat ladder", trying lower reward treats first, so that if more distraction is needed we can up the ante and utilize higher value treats when needed. You will see us use different treats in the hospital, such as soft treats, crunchy treats, dried liver, marshmallows and even whipped cream.

Today, August 22nd marks National Take your Cat To the Vet Day! Did you know that 83% of cats visit the veterinarian before their 1st birthday, but over 50% don’t return until they become sick or are in pain?
Routine veterinary care is important for dogs AND cats, given that they age a lot quicker than humans and they cannot verbalize when something may be off or wrong. We believe that preventative care is better than reactive care! We may be able to catch illness or disease before too late.
Give us a call at 360-892-0032 to get your cat's exam scheduled!

Today we are featuring Dr. Holley Crooks, who will also be joining our hospital starting next week! Dr. Crooks grew up in Phoenix, AZ but spent her summers visiting family in Hood River, OR. She knew from an early age that she loved the PNW and wanted to call it home. Dr. Crooks attended Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, AZ where she met her husband. After graduating, she went on to Washington State University in Pullman, WA where she earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2007. Since then, she has lived and worked in Vancouver, WA. She enjoys being a veterinarian because no two days are the same and every day is an opportunity to strengthen the human animal bond. Some of her favorite breeds are Chihuahuas and Pit Bulls.
Dr. Crooks is also a hot yoga instructor and teaches classes locally. She has a pack of several dogs and several cats, ruled by a cranky Chihuahua named Fava and a scruffy gray and white tuxedo cat named NinjaMittens (pictured).

Please help us give a warm welcome to Dr. Amanda Hicks! She will be joining our team next week and we wanted to let you all know a bit more about her. She graduated from Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine in 2017. A change from the Midwest took her to New Mexico where she worked in a busy small animal practice gaining experience with a variety of urgent care and medical cases.
The wanderlust struck again and she moved to the Pacific Northwest, landing in Vancouver, Washington in 2021 where she happily continued to practice and grow in veterinary medicine. Dr. Hicks is Fear Free certified and values those bonds we have with our pets. She strives to remain current with up to date information in our profession.
Outside of the clinic, Dr. Hicks enjoys spending time with her wonderful wife, their cat and three dogs. A few hobbies she enjoys are spending time in the great outdoors, climbing and cooking.

Today is Black Cat Appreciation Day. No kitty is as misunderstood as our inky-furred feline friend, the black cat.
In 2017, Cats Protection welfare charity revealed that their black cat residents took 13% longer to be rehomed than cats of any other color. Shocking, right!?
Typically associated with bad-luck, witches and Halloween, it’s well known that dark-haired kitties have a long (and unfair) myth-filled history. To help debunk these common misconceptions and prove their bad reputation is all hocus pocus, Feliway put together 10 fascinating facts about black cats… Check it out below.

With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.

Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.

If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.
