Are you concerned about your cat’s stress level when it’s time for a vet visit? Here is how we can make them as comfortable as possible.

The first step is starting at home and asking “how can I prevent my cat from getting worked up before going to the vet”

Some cats see their carrier and know that it is associated with getting in the car and going to the vet. The cat carrier should be part of your cat’s everyday life. Not only will it make the trip to the vet easier, it can also save your cat’s life in case of an emergency. Creating a positive experience with the carrier is key to a fear-free vet visit.
From picking the right carrier to making it an alluring part of your cat’s everyday environment, training a cat to accept the carrier is not difficult. It just takes persistence on the human’s part and lots of rewards for the cat.
Don’t stash the carrier in the basement or a closet. Keep it out in an area where your cat spends a lot of time. Make it interesting for your cat by keeping a cat bed or soft blanket inside. If your cat responds to catnip, sprinkle it with catnip. Leave their favorite toys or treats inside.Once your cat willingly enters the carrier and is comfortable in it, practice closing the door. Close the door for only a few moments and reward your cat with a treat if he remains calm. Gradually increase the time you leave him in the carrier. Practice picking up the carrier, holding it carefully in both arms. Work up to taking short rides with your cat in the car.
Most cat owners place the carrier on the passenger seat and use the seatbelt to secure it. Unless your cat carrier has been crash-tested and certified, Center for Pet Safety founder Lindsey Wolko has this advice: “Don’t use the seat belt to strap in the carrier. Place plastic carriers and soft-sided carriers on the floor of the vehicle behind the front driver or passenger seats.”Cover the carrier with a towel to reduce your cat’s exposure to potentially frightening sights and sounds. Even though your instinct may be to talk to your cat in the car, unless you are truly relaxed, worried emotional talk such as “There, there, it will be okay; I’m not going to let anything bad happen to you” will probably not calm your cat. Instead, play calming music composed especially for cats.
Feline specific pheromone sprays (like feliway) can help provide a sense of comfort and ease to your kitty.
We recommend consulting your veterinarian if you know that your cat is extremely scared, stressed, or angry/fractious when they come to the vet. Your cat may be a candidate for PVP’s (Pre Visit Pharmaceuticals). Our goal is not to fully sedate your pet, but to take the edge off to help create a more positive and less scary experience.
And last, but not least- once entering the clinic please wait in our designated feline area. It is important to ensure your kitty’s carrier is not placed on the floor, but instead placed onto the bench with you. There are feliway blankets in a basket that can be used to place over your cat’s carrier; this will help create a barrier from the outside world where your cat can hide, and will disperse calming pheromones.

We now carry Yummy Combs! What exactly is a Yummy Comb? Well we are here to answer!

The honeycomb-like patented shape makes it different from any other dog dental treat. The treat surrounds your dog’s teeth for a deeper, more complete clean while it is being chewed. It is designed to floss dogs’ teeth all the way to the gum line and gently massages where periodontal disease gets its foothold. Its width and depth prevents dogs from gulping it down in one bite and encourages them to chew longer.

You can locate these within our retail section located in our lobby

Today is World Pet Memorial Day, so we remember our furry, feathered, and scaly companions who are no longer with us.

We often use the term crossing the rainbow bridge when we say goodbye to our beloved four legged family members- we'd like to think that on the other side of the rainbow bridge is a version of us greeting them with endless belly rubs and treats.

Please feel free to share a photo in the comments of a pet you will be remembering and honoring today.

Our faces when we realized today was International Corgi Day!!

Here are some fun facts about our sweet small friends!

❤️ The word "corgi" means "dwarf dog" in Welsh.

❤️ Corgis were originally used as herding dogs, going back as early as the 10th century.

❤️ Corgis have a double coat of hair, which makes them great dogs for those cold Canadian winters.

❤️ Cardigan Welsh Corgis have been around for thousands of years!

There are some exciting changes underway at Cascade Park Animal Hospital! We have decided to close on Saturdays for the summer. This will allow our doctors to attend educational events, prepare our hospital for renovations, and work on team training. We will be increasing our technician appointments during the week and will still be accepting same day urgent care visits on a case by case basis.

For rehabilitation patients we will be increasing our hours through the week to accommodate schedule requests.

Our hospital hours beginning Monday, June 3, 2024 will be 7:30a - 6:00p M-F.

Thank you for trusting us with your furry family members and we look forward to seeing you soon.

It's National Heartworm Awareness Month!

Heartworm disease affects increasing numbers of dogs and cats in the US every year. The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and is most prevalent in warm and humid climates. Peak transmission usually occurs during July and August, although pets in certain areas such as the Southeastern US may be at risk year-round. Heartworm disease is a serious, sometimes fatal condition which can be safely and easily prevented using a monthly heartworm preventative medication. Yearly testing for heartworm is strongly recommended for all dogs.

Heartworm can be present in several different varieties of environment, even gated communities.

Reach out to our team if you have any questions about heartworm prevention and heartworm testing.

With Easter approaching us this Sunday- our medical team at Cascade Park Animal Hospital wants to remind pet owners of how dangerous lilies are to our feline companions.

We all see the swarm of lilies in stores this time of year, so if you find yourself tempted to bring one home please remember this pretty plant can be fatal to your cat.

Lilies are lethally toxic to cats. In fact, they are so poisonous that a cat can suffer fatal kidney failure just from biting into a lily leaf or petal, licking lily pollen from its paws, or drinking water from a vase containing cut lilies.

If your cat has had exposure to lilies please seek emergency care- do not wait to seek care.

What are the signs to look for if your cat has had confirmed or potential exposure to toxic lilies? decreased appetite, drooling, vomiting, displaying signs of depression, and lethargy. Vomiting may appear to “resolve” within 2-6 hours, but don’t be fooled into thinking your furry friend is getting better. Within 12-30 hours your cat can develop excessive thirst and urinations as the kidney damage progresses. This places cats at risk for severe dehydration, which further compounds the effects of the kidney damage, and within 24-48 hours the kidneys may completely shut down and your cat will no longer be able to produce and void urine.

Meet Hershel! He first started coming to see us in August 2023 after being referred by his behaviorist, who he worked with diligently. He has extreme veterinary fear and required injectable sedation to be examined or treated. On his first visit, he was unwilling to engage with staff and would try to get away and even become aggressive if his personal space felt encroached upon. After monthly happy visits, we slowly worked with him to allow for physical examination, he is playful and enjoys coming to his visits with very low doses of trazodone prior.. He is still a work in progress, but he has improved leaps and bounds with his dedicated pet parents and monthly fear free visits with the team here at CPAH. If you have a fearful pet, call us to discuss how we can best assist you and your pet with veterinary fear.

It’s baby opossum season!

Babies are usually and unfortunately found in the pouches of their deceased mothers- if you come across this scenario you may be asking yourself, well what am I to do now? Call your local wildlife rehabilitation ASAP and notify them of your location so they can come safely remove the babies and get them to a secure location where they can be treated.

If you come across a dead opossum with older babies that are clinging to her/finding shelter in her pouch- with gloves or clean hands safely remove the babies and place them in a box with fleece to warm them, then call your local wildlife rehabilitation center ASAP.

Babies who get separated from their mom will often “call” for her, this sound is similar to a little shriek. Do not leave this baby alone, their mothers will not come back for them because they often don’t realize the baby has fallen off. If you have found a displaced baby there is a very good chance there are more close by, so if you can please always do a thorough search.

The most important thing when you find an orphaned baby opossum is- do not try to rehabilitate them on your own.

*They are not like other species who have a pre-made formula. A series of ingredients and nutrients are added to a specific formula in order to replicate what they would get from their mothers. Babies require a certain ratio and amount per their weight, without this balance it is detrimental to the orphaned joey.
*Babies at a certain age need to be tube fed, they cannot suckle on a normal bottle like other species due to the way they naturally obtain nutrients from their mother directly to their stomach. Tube feeding should not be attempted by someone without experience- if done incorrectly this can also be detrimental to the joey.
*If juvenile/teenage opossums are fed the incorrect diet they will develop a condition called metabolic disease, which is extremely difficult to treat, it is painful for the opossum, and will typically result in death.

It is illegal to rehabilitate wildlife without a license, which is another very important reason to contact your local wildlife rescue- the baby you find will be placed with a highly trained individual.

The biggest help you can provide an orphaned baby when you come across them is by providing them a safe space and warmth until they can get to a licensed professional.

If you find an orphaned opossum and you don’t know what steps to take in order to get it to a rescue, please reach out to our staff which has several members who volunteer with various wildlife organizations and can get the baby to safety.

Need a medication filled or a refilled?

Medications can take up to 4-6 business days to process from the initial request (written, approvals, fills, and refills). We always recommend notifying your veterinary staff a week prior to your pet's running out of their medications or needing a refill, especially if it is a controlled medication. We can get up to 30+ medication requests a day and our team does try to get through them as quickly as we can.

If you need a prescription rushed please call us to let our team know, however there is a $20 STAT fee associated with these special requests because we are now putting your pet's prescription in-front of the others who have been waiting, there is no exception to this fee.

We appreciate your patience and understanding!
